Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 129,039, dated July 16,1872.
Specication describing a new and useful Improvement in VVater-Closet Fixtures, invented by CHARLES LEDwrcH, of Fishkill Landing, in the county of Dutchess and State of New York.
The object of this invention is to improve the mode now in common use of setting the bowls of water-closets.
The usual mode is to set the ange of the bowl inv putty. This putty'is liable to become loose and get displaced, which endangers the bowl, and renders instant repairs necessary. The difliculty of getting at the source of the trouble renders the services of theplumber expensive, while the gases thus liberated are a constant source of annoyance, as well as detrimental to health. I avoid all this trouble by applying a double rubber packing-ring to the flange of the bowl in the manner hereinafter described.'
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a vertical section of the bowl and packing' on the linea.n .fr of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a top view. Fig. 3 is a detail, showing the packing' enlarged.

A represents the bowl. B is the metallic top plate of the closet ixture. C is the a'nge on the bowl. D is a double rubber ring, which surrounds the bowl. This ring is of V-form, and the flange of the bowl is received between the parts or in the acute angle thus formed. The rubber packing-rin g is attached to the metallic top plate B by rivets or screws E. F is a metallic band placed in the angle of the rubberpackin g, through which the rivets or screws pass, as seen in Fig. 3. The lower member of the rubber packing-rin g is thus firmly connected with the top plate B. The upper member tightly embraces the lange of the bowl, and makes a perfectly tight joint, excluding all offensive odors. This joint is not only gas and water tight, but Ais suiciently tlexible to withstand the jarring and hard usage to which water-closet fixtures are subjected, and which soon-destroys the ordinary joint.
I do not confine myself to the precise form of the packing-ring, nor to theprecise arrangement of the other parts described.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The double rubber ring D, in combinationv with the bowl A and top plate B, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. The metallic ring F, in combination with the packing-ring D and plate B, as and for the purposes described.
