l Be it known that I, Goonlncu Q. Lewis, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wheaton. in the county of Dupage and State ofIllinois` have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Railway-Car Draft liigging, of which the following is a full, clear. concise. and exact description, reference. being had to the accon'ipanying draw ings, 'forming' a part of this specication.
This invention relates to in'lprovem'ents in railway car draft riggings.
The object of the invention is to provide a draft rigging for railway cars so arranged as to permit V removal of the gear from the under side of the sills without disconnecting the yoke and draw bar; to provide an arrangel'nent-whereby the draft or center sills are effectively tied against spreading; to dispose the metal in the stops in the most efficient manner toresist the shocks imposed thereon; to provide a novel stop cast-ing ha ving a large riveting area; and to so arrange the stop casting that the coupler key is re lieved of the necessity of supporting' the coupler and the coupler i'naintained in proper alinement. with the gear. l

and the yoke abuts the stop casting 11 which acts as the rear stop for the draft gear in buffing movements. i
The front sto i inem-bers ofthe rigging are formed by a hoillow` substantially rectangle lar casting B. The casting lcoinprises vertical side walls 1G 16. fitting against and riveted to the center sills, a horizontal upper web 17 extending betweenv said walls 1G. a lower horizontal web 18 also extending hetween said side walls 16 and laterally ex tended flanges 19 19, at the bottom of the casting B` said flanges 19 19 being riveted or otherwise suitably secured to the lower flanges of the sills. At its rear edge the upper flange 17 isprovided with a vertically extending shoulder 20, which goes from sill to sill, and against which the upper portion of the front follower 21 abuts in normal position of the parts. The lower web 18 of the casting B is provided with a downwardly extending flange at vits rear end, which also extends entirely across the space between the` sills, and forms an abutment for the lower portion of the follower .21. The upper web 1T at its front end is provided `with a vertically extending flange '23 against which is secured the buffer casting 21. The lower horizontal web of the casting B is extended forwardly beneath the buffer casting 2-1, as are also the side walls 16 16, and at its front edge is proyided with ,a depending flange Suitable longitudinally arranged vertical flanges 26, and 27, are provided to brace the flanges 20, and22 substantially at the center thereof.; see Fig. 3. The side walls 16 1G are provided with elongated slots 28,28 to accommodate. the coupler key in its forward and rearward movements. as clearly appears from Fig. 2. To the side walls ofthe casting B. near the front thereof,
are bolted blocks 29 y:29 to form the necessary standard clearance between t-he draw bar shank and the sills. As clearly appears from Fig. 2, the front ends of the arms of the yoke lare provided with reinforcing; flanges 30 to. form a widerbearing for the coupler key, and the draw bar is similarly reinforced as indicated at 31 to form a wider bearing for the rear side of the coupler key. The gear is supported by means of a detachalble saddle plate 32 upon which the combined friction shell and spring casing slides back and forth. l
In bufiing movement., it is apparent that loo the draw bar will `directly abut the front foly lower 21 and force the same rearwardly, thus actuating the friction mechanism, the
friction shell and spring casing' being prevented from rearward movement by the yoke and rear stop 11. In draft, the front follower 21 will bear against the shoulders 20 and thus holding the wedge of the-friction mechanism stationary while the shell and shoes move forwardly. In this latter action it will be noted that the forces are transmitted to the stop casting B in the most eiiieient manner, that is, longitudinally and directl:y in line with the horizontally disposed webs l? and 1S. The upper face of the lower web 18 is slightly recessed, as indicated at 33, so that the butt of the draw bar may ride back and forththereon, thus supporting the draw bar directly by the casting B and always maintaining it in the line of draft. As shown, the front follower 21 is recessed on its sides, as indicated at 3l 34, to accommodate the arms of the yoke So that the follower is supported by the yoke, thereby eliminating the necessity of an additional supporting plate for the follower.
I claim:
1. As an article of manufacture, a front stop casting for draft riggings, said stop casting comprising integral upper and lower horizontally extending webs provided with vertical shoulders along' their rear edges, the upper web being' shorter than the lower web and the latter being adapted to extend to the end of the car, the upper web being' adapted to have a 'buffer block applied in line therewith, said casting having vertical side webs connecting said upper and lower webs.
'2. In a draft rigging, the combination with metal draft sills havingoutwardly extended tianges along their lowerl edges, of ay rear stop castingy extending' between and secured to said sills, shock absorbing?r means, yoke-actingmeans, a draw bar, connections between said yoke acting` means and the draw bar, and a front stop casting for the shock absorbing` means, said front stop east- .ing being of hollow rectangular formation with integral side walls and upper and lower horizontal walls, said side walls being secured to the vertical portions of said sills, the upper horizontal wall of said front stop casting being' of lesser length than the lower wall to thereby permit the employment of a bulfer block in line with said upper horizontal wall, said lower wall beingadapted to aet as a carry iron for the draw bar.
