"FEED NECK-II Application filed December 222, 191
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that i, Mm: Enos, 2 subject of the Emperor of Germany, and resident of Detroihl /iichigan, have invented certain. new and useful Improvements in Tops for Vehicles and the like, off which the ioilowmeans by which the covering meteriei may be left loose at both ends, so that it can be pulled over the bows to proper position, and tension and thereafter, ole-mood firmly in place.
A still further object is to provide a fastenin means which may be readily operated to re ease the covering when a new top is required, and as readily operated to clamp the new covering material in place.
Other-objects will also appear in the f0llowing specification.
The invention includes the novel "features of construction and arrangement and combination or parts hereinafter described, severul embodiments of my invention being illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is airegmentary sectional ole vstion of a top embodying one form of my invention.
Fig. 1 is a detail view of e slight modiiication.
Figs. 2, 3, end i are views of Referring by reference cheieciersto this drawing the numeral 1 designates the bow of a motor vehicle top; 2 the outrigger bow, and 3, 3, the intermediate bows. As these letter and the manner in which they support the top covering form no part of the present invention'they are shown in a conventional manner only.
The bows 1 and 2 constitute terminal bows, to which the front and rear ends oi the top covering are secured and they are preferably made of metal tubing of sub Stantially El -shape in cross section with the Specification of Blotters iiet side on the inside of covering materiel is indicate my preferred embodiment of it is lepped, or drawn around outer surface of the bow, and against the fiat face oi "oi a oi is ciemped. 33 thus cuu. to ov "i Q or extend arou face of the tube on extends rib ing is secured, so that u minimum oi strain is placed on the clamping or toning device, and the greater the strui the covering the greater this qugenient, A form of means which i found d sirable. for clumping; the covering material. is to prev: relity of threaded studs or hoi'ts 5 from the flat face 2 of: the bow, ccv ing material being provided with elon cu slots to secure these studs and perm drawing tout of the top material, o clamping bar 6 forced against the me 4 by the nuts 5 on the bolts or studs 5. i ne slots in the covering may be made by knife or punch while the covering material is be ing pulled around and against the cndsof thebolts.
end iii teriel may be used to connect the edge of what is known in the trade as valence pocket t'or carrying the side curtsiins and thus avoids the necessity of trimming off any of the free edges of the covering meterial, and also protects said free ed" view. The valancepochet, indi may be connected by detachable any suitebie type, such as snap fee. diceted at 7*.
L: desired the valence pocket ru nested by carrying its e go lclampin bar 6 and the top ineterisi carted at Fig.
The clamping strip 01* he reei how may eiso be used to rat-each the upper end of thereer curtain S simply causing said 1% upper edge to overlie the covering material and be clumped simultaneously tl'ierewith to the bow, indicated at 8. This arrangement enables the rear curtain to be readily ln Fig: 3 I have disclosed forms of terminal bows 1 and 2 having recesses 1 and 2- in their outer faces into which the covering material is clan'iped by a flexible wire or metal strip (5. the ends of which may be secured to the bows in any suit-able manner, as by means of the screws or bolts 9.
In this form the rear curtain may be held by the same clamping wire or strip as indiated at 8.
If desired the wire (P'pn the front bow eould be sewn in to the curtain valance and then clamped over the covering material l". as shown in Fig. 4, and the covering material could be left. sullicientlv long enough so that the trimmer pulling it tight. After the wire is pulled light this curtain valance could be swung upward and fastened against the bow,
thereby hiding the edge of the covering material.
For the purpose of tightening the wire a bolt 5)" couldbe arranged to pass through the side of the bow having a hole through its head which would lie n the outside for the wire to pass through. The belt could then be turned around, winding the wire around it until it is tight, and the bolt then could be locked by means of a nut screwed tight on the inside.
What I claim is:
1. In a vehicle top the combination with a bow, of a top covering having its edge lapped around the outer surface of said bow and could get hold of it for provided with elongated slots disposed transversely of the bow. a clamping bar for clamping said covering to the bow by frictional contact. and adjustable means connecting said elampingbar and how through said elongated slots.
2. In a vehicle top. the combination with a bow, of top covering material lapped around the ()llit r face of said how, means for clamping said material to the inner face of the how. the edge of the material projecting bevond said clamping device. and a curtain pocket secured to said extended edge.
3. In a vehicle top the combination with the trout and rear terminal bows. ot' co\'er ing material extending between said bows, and adjustable clamping means carried by said terminal bows bet ween which means and the bows the covering material extends, said means being capable of being loosened to allow the covering material to be positioned or tightened from either end and being eapable of being operated to clamp said covering material in its adjusted position.
i. In a vehicle top a terminal bow, covering material lapped around said how, a clamping bar. means adjustably holding said clamping bar for clamping a part of said lapped portion to said how on the inside thereof, and a flexible member having an edge clamped between said bar and said part of the lapped portion.
In testimony whereof, I atiix my signature.
