To all whom z't may concern:
Be it known that I, ERAs'rUs B. BENNETT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city and county of Denver. State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Amalgamating- Pockets; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of my invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in means for treating ore by the amalgamating process, and the invention has for its object the provision of pockets adapted to contain a quantity of mercury and through which pockets the ore passes.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for causing the ore to be uniformly and constantly fed through the pockets over the mercury.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for dissipating the ore to cause the latter to be thoroughly exposed to the mercury contained within the pockets.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for preventing congestion of the ore in the pockets.
With these and other objects in view, which will become apparent in the following detail description, I will proceed to describe my invention with reference to the accompanying drawing.
In this drawing, Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a tank in which the pockets are arranged, the view showing the riiiies, which form the pockets, in cross section; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the tank; Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view of one of the riiles forming the pockets, the said view being taken on the line 3 3, Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a transverse view, partially in section and partially broken away, showing one of the water feed pipes disposed in the pocket, the said view being taken on the line 4.-4 looking in the direction of the arrow.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the accompanying drawings by the same reference characters.
Let the numeral 5 designate a tank, having an inclined bottom 6, on which the improved amalgam pockets are disposed. These pockets, which are designated by 7, are formed by curving the lower extremities Specification of Letters Patent.

of the bottom of the boxes. I employ a plurality of these boxes 8, successively arranged so that the ore will pass through each of them. The rear extremity of each of the boxes 8 is turned upwardly at an angle, as shown at 9, and is overlapped by the curved part 10, of the adjacent box, as shown at 12, the said curved part 10 of each box being shaped to form a recess for the reception of the upwardly turned parts of the adjacent boxes. These boxes S are provided with sides 13, which extend above the top of the pockets 7, whereby the ore is prevented from over-flowing the pockets 7 at the extremities of the latter. These boxes 8 are secured to the inclined bottom of the tank 5 by means of fastening devices 14, the said boxes also occupying positions inclined to the horizontal and corresponding with the inclined bottom 6 of the tank 5. The pockets 7 extend transversely of the tank 5, and a transverse water feed pipe 15 is disposed in each of said pockets longitudinally of the latter, a space being left between said pipes and the bottom of the pockets, through which the ore is adapted to pass over the mercury. These water feed pipes are provided with relatively narrow longitudinal slots 16 disposed to discharge a sheet of water forwardly in the pockets. Thus, this sheet of water will feed the ore forwardly through the pockets and at the same time dissipate the ore to cause same to be thoroughly exposed to the mercury, in which the values are retained, while the waste material passes out of the pockets. It will also be understood that this sheet of water will prevent the ore from congesting in the pockets 7 for the reason that the space between the pipes l5 and the mercury in the pockets will always be kept open by the iowing water, the latter influencing the passagel of the ore through said space.
An ore feeding cylinder 17 is journaledV at the forward extremity of the tank 5 and l feeds the ore to the first box 8, as indicated by the arrow, and thence the ore travels successively through the boxes 8 and is finally discharged from the tank 5 through a transverse slot 18, disposed in the rear end of the tank adjacent the bottom of the latter. It is understood that the tank 5 is adapted to contain a quantity of water in which the cylinder 17 is partially submerged and the boxes 8 entirely submerged.
The water feed pipes 15 are supported by the opposite sides of the tank 5, through which the said pipes pass. A feed, or supply main 19 connects the pipes l5, whereby water is constantly supplied to the latter.
It will be understood that my improved pockets may be employed without the tank 5, and also that it is not necessary to have the pipes entirely submerged in water, as is the case when the tank 5 is filled with water.
While I have described and illustrated herein a specific form of my invention, it is understood that I am not limited thereto and that the same may be modified and varied without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is. n
`1. A machine for treating ore, comprising a tank having an inclined bottom, a box arranged on the inclined bottom of said tank, said box having its forward extremity upwardly curved in the shape of a segment of a circle, a water supply pipe disposed above said box and having a longitudinal feed slot tangential to the pipe bore, said box adapted to contain a quantity of mercury, a space being left between said water supply pipe and the normal surface of the mercury in said box, and the slot of Said water supply pipe being directed to the center of the normal surface of the mercury.
