I Irv/anion W J. Sutcliffe, 61
' A ormzg,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIS J. SUTCLIFFE, OF WATERLOO, IOWA.
CURTAIN-FIXTURE.
Application filed February 21, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIS J. SUToLIFrE, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Waterloo, Blackhawk county, Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curtain-Fixtures. of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in curtain fixtures, and the object of my invention is to provide a movable cover for the exposed part of an automobile radiator or other body with means for retaining the cover thereover to prevent the circulation of cooling air-currents between the cover and the radiator.
This object I haveaccomplished by the means which are hereinafter described and claimed, and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective of the forward part of an automobile, showing my improved covering means for the front of the radiator partially drawn up to cover same; Fig. 2 is a per spective, on an enlarged scale, of my said device.
Similar numerals of reference denote similar parts throughout the several views.
I am aware that removable covers have been provided forthe protection of the exposed part of an automobile radiator from cooling air-currents 1n wlnter, but have found that such means have been unprovided wlth any means adapted to properly prevent the thereto and projecting laterally therefrom,
provided with a plurality of orifices 4 through which fastening-means, such as screws or bolts, may be inserted to fasten the device about the exposed front part of a radiator 15 on the forward surface of the engine-casing 16 of an automobile.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 31, 1918.
Serial No. 150,251.
Within the boxing 5 is rotatably mounted the spring actuated roller 6 of a well-known type, and upon said roller is mounted a curtaln or cover 7, made of flexible material, and having its free edge bound by means of a rigid channel-bar 8. The longitudinal edges of the cover 7 and the ends of the channel-bar 8 are seated within the troughs of the vertical channel-bars 1 to move vertically therein.
The numeral 10 denotes a short tube placed within the upper part of the engine casing 16, with its forward'end in communication with an orifice in the depending rear portion of the troughed hood 2. The tube 10 may be reversely curved within said casing to clear. the contents thereof. A flexible cable 9 is connected to the middle of the cross-bar 8 on the cover 7, is carried upwardly, and passed rearwardly through the tube 10 and connected to a chain 11, which in turn, is carried rearwardlythrough an opening 13 in the dash-board 12 and provided with a terminal ring 14 adapted to be caught over the hook 19 on said dash-board when the curtain is fully drawn up.
In the device, the curtain 7 is kept in close proximity to the front of the radiator, and held thereon compressively so that it cannot lift away from the radiator to permit the passage of cooling air-currents therebe that the radiator is efficiently protected from drafts while the vertical channel-bars 1 serve as guides for the side edges of the cover.
When the terminal ring 14 is disengaged from the hook 19, the reaction of the spring roller 6 rollsup'the cover 7 to uncover the radiator.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A curtain fixture comprising a frame consisting of connected inwardly-troughed sidemembers connected 'at the top by a downwardly-troughed cross-member, the lower f1 ma am ends of said, side-members being connected by a boxing open only inwardly, a springcontrolled roller mounted rotatably in said boxing, a flexible imperforate curtain Wound 5 on said roller to be unrolled, said curtain having a rigid crossbar fixed across its free end with extremities slidably seated in the troughs of said side-members, and a flexible draft-connection connected to said cross-bar adapted for use in drawing the curtain up. 10
Signed at \Vaterloo, Iowa, this 2nd day of February, 1917.
WILLIS J. SUTCLIFFE.
