WITNESISES HENRY SENGLER, F NEW YORK, N. Y.
CLOSURE.
tessera application filed January S, 19114!A b all 'whom it may concern:
Be 1t known that I, Henny SPENGLER, a
'citizen of the lUnited States of America, and
lll. YQ have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Closures, of which the. following is a specification. y
This invention relates to caps or closures, particularly adaptedfor use as bottle oloeures, though their use is not limited to this relation.
One of the objects of the invention is to produce a device of the kind referred to which is readily put into place, which edec- 'tuall accomplishes its sealing7 oipcovering fune. in, and whiclrfmay be removed without the use o t' any tools whatsoever.
The invention embodies certain improvements upon the devices described and claimed in my U. S. Patent No. 1,074-,967 granted te me Uctober 7th, 1913`7 and there-- fore provides a bottle cap having` a central resilient portion which may be bulged to one 'side of a plane and yieldable under pressure said cap having; means jrripped to the bottle month while the said bulge is maintained and released therefrom when the bulged portion is depressed, and the said bulged portion being capable of springingV or being` brought back from the said releasing` posi.- tion. f
The invention also contemplates. in addition to the features last above n'icnl'ioned, means whereby the manual actuation otl the cap is rendered more easy. i
ln the accompanying drawings which are to be taken as a part of this specification` and in which .l have shown merely preferrtal forms of embodiments of the invention, Fie;- ure l is a perspective view of a torni ot the invention shoyving a cam-lever means for actuating the cap; Fig'. 2 is a central vertical section illustra int1 the subject matter of Fig'. l, and showing two positions oi the lever in full and dotted lines, respectively` and Fig. El is a central sectional view illustrating a form of cap with a central knobi'or depressing or raising theJ central bulge.
RelE ring to the numerals on the drawings and pa. icularly Figs. l and 2, 1 indicates a cap con'iprising a, disk ot resilient metal, having a set eausing it to bulge slightly in the center, as indicated at 2, and ha ving;V perip' eral lingers 3 which may be defined by slits Specification of Letters Patent.
liatented Der; Slt, 1918.
Serial No. 811.@13.
4, cut in the periphery ol the disk. Diametrically opposite one ot' thcst lingers tl are turned up, as indicated at ll7 and these turned-upv members (3 are aperturcdto provide bearings tor a cam-lever T, which lcvcr has a U-shaped -part for engagement by the fingers of the user, and cam portions fw which are intended to contact with the upwardly bulged portion of the cap.y so that when the lever is brought to the position shown in t'ull lines in Fig. 2, the bulge is depressed, and when the lever lies in the position shown in Fig. l and in dotted lines in Fig. 2. the bulge is permitted to assume the dotted line position shown in Fic. 2. ll will be understood that when the lever is in the position shown in 'Fig'. l, the cap, if it be in position on a bottle!` will beheld tightly thereon. by rca son ot' the tact that the line-ers il grip the bottle mouth tightly; but when the level' is raised to the full lille position ot Fig'. 2. b y reason of the depression ol the bulge ot the cap, thc lingers are caused to sp lad and are thereby released t'rom the botthl mouth.
Referring now lo Fig. Il. there is shown a cap generally similar lo that shown in my aforesaid patent and to thc caps shown in Figs. l and 2 ol' the present drawingrsdnltthe said cap is provided with a knob 1t). secured to the ccnlral part o'l" thc can. ly means ot' this knob the user may easily depress or raise the bulge ol thc cap` to release or lock thc same from or to the bottle mouth. `Vith rcspect to the cap shown in Fig. il. as well as to those shown in the other two lijrurcs, il is to be understood that the. central disk portion may bc so l'ormcd that the bulei` may be sprung' to either one olI two positions, aboveI and below the plane rcs|wctivcly. so that the bulgre will remain in either one ol' thosc two positions to which it may be sprung.
sniany changes could be made in the above construrtion and many apparently widely dill'crcnl cmlmdiulcnls olA this invention could be mad(l without dcpaitin,"r lronl the scope lhercot, it is intended that all malter contained in the above description 'or shown in the accompanyinnr drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense. li is also to b'l understood that the language used in the following; claims is intended to cover all ot' the generic and specific features of thc invention hcrcin dcscribed and all statements ol' the scope ol the invention whiclras a inatlcr ol language7 might be said to fall therebetween.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. A cap for bottles or the like having a central portion and separated fingers depending therefrom and integral therewith,
said central portion having.v a permanent set causing it to bulge outward when said tingers are in gripping position, said iingers being movable from the gripping position by pressing the bulge inv-ard, and means carried by the cap for depressing the bulge, said means also constituting a handle for bodily removing the cap from the bottle when thc bulge is depressed.
Q. A cap for bottles or the like having a central portion and separated lingers depending thereiirom and .integral therewith, said cent al portion having a permanent set causing it to bulge outward when said fingers are in gripping position, said fingers being movable from the gripping position by pressing the bulge inward, and a finger piece acting against said central portion ior depressing the bulge, said finger piece also constituting a means` whereby the cap may be bodily removed from the bottle.
3. A cap for bottles or the like having a central portion and separated fingers depending therefrom and integral therewith, said central portion having a permanent set causing it to bulge outward when said fin gers are in gripping position, said fingers being movable from the gripping position by pressing the bulge inward, and a lever pivotally secured to the cap having a means associated therewith for depressing the bulge when the lever is in a raised osition.
4. A cap for bottles or the like having a cental portion and separated lfingers depending therefrom and integral therewith, said central portion having a permanent set causing it to bulge outward when said iingers are in gripping position, said lingers being movable from the gripping position by pressing the bulge inward, and a U shaped lever pivotally secured to the cap, said lever provided with cammed faces at its ends arranged to coact with the bulged portion and depress the same when the lever is raised.
5. A cap for bottles 'or the like having a cent 'al portion and separated ingers depending therei'rom and integral therewith, said central portion having a permanent set causing it to bulge outward when said fingers are in gripping position, said fingers being movable from the gripping position by pressing the bulge inward, the material ot' the cap being resilient so that the central portion tends to spring to its outward bulged position when brought approximately thereto, and .means carried by the cap for depressing the` bulge.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two witnesses:
HENRY SPENGLER.
In the presence of- ALDA L. MILLER, MARY H. LEWIS.
