To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SA UE R. BELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Beaumont, in the county of Jelferson and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Refrigerating-- Machines, of which the following is a specification. p
The invention relates to refrigeration, and one of the main objects thereof is to pro video double jacketed brine cylinder havin a self-contained expansion tank for the re rigerant, whereby a relatively great cooling area is provided with a-relatively small displacement in the cylinder, and a further object is to provide means for insuring the circulation of the brine through said cylinder.
The invention is fully described in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts are designated by the same reference characters in each of the views, and in -which:-
Figure 1 is a central, longitudinal, vcrtical, section taken through a cylinder constructed in accordance with. the invention; and.
Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line '2-2 of Fig. 1. In the drawings forming a part of this application is shown a present preferred form of embodiment of the invention comprising a cylinder 3 having front and rear heads 4 and 5 supporting a centrally arranged shaft 6 projecting through the former, a suitable shilling-box 7 being provided therefor, and said shaft will be connected with a suitable source of power, not shown, and carries a plurality of SJlIlll blades 8 secured thereto lay-means 0 screws 9, or equivalent and said cylinder is provided with an inlet plpe 10 adjacent its periphery and with an outlet pipe 11 adjacent its axis.
The cylinder head l has an inwardly dirooted flange 12 thereon provided with oponings 13 thercthrongh and, together with the head 5, serving to support two oylimirioal sections 14. and 15 spaced apart to form a chamber 16 by means of end rings 17. The chamber 16 serves as a substitute for the con ventional refrigerator coil and may be con nected with a suitable pump, this not being illustrated, however, as any form thereof may be on'iployed, and said chamber is provided with a pipe 18 at one side, and with Specification of Letters 13a tent.
Patented Dec. 3i, 3'19? 8. Serial No. 217,089.
a pipe 19 at the opposite side, both project ing through the wall of the cylinder 3 and suitably packed against leakage into said cylinder, the former of which ipes serves as the expansion. pipe and the utter as the suction pipe for the refrigerant, such as an hydrous ammonia or equivalent, admitted to the chamber 16.
The brine or other saline solution enters the outer compartment 20 of the cylinder, through the pipe l0, and fills the same, time surrounding the chamber 16, and passes thence through the openings 13 to the corn partment 2! where it is acted upon by the spiral, rotary, circulntor, blades 8 and i'lriven outwardly of the cylinder 3 through the pipe 11; in such passage of the brine a large proportion of the by the refrigerant in the chamber 15 and. after leaving the cylinder 3, may he carried to the air or water coils,
its ehsorption oi and is again p it will thus be seen that a device is pro vided through which the saline solution positively forced for twice the length thereof in the present shoving, although one or more additional refrigerant chambers might be provided and the solution passed lengdi of all, resulting in a very low temperature oil said solution; it will also he observed that the unit shown may he dngi licatid or mul ti plied in one system in order t sagrggerate the result; it will he further newt? th: each unit oon'ipriscs the solt-containcd refrigerant chamber and the brine Jr-emulsion n'ienns,
and that the device, in. one or more units,
point in it may he pla ed at any desired rcFri no rat i no system i.
Reser ing the right to all such changes in and modifications of the details of construction shown and do: within the scope'of the following clnii What is claimed as new, and ilcsired to scenic hy l ietiers Patent, is1--- l. The conshiunlimr in a refrigerating tom, at a cylinder provided with seltcontained means for propelling a saline solution thine-through, one. with cylindrical members forming a chamber for the refrigcram; arranged to cause said solution to traverse said cylinder from end to end in each direction, said chumloer having an in lot and an outlet.
ice pans, or the like and, when its temperature is again raised by the heat in the water or erated, said orine returns to wed through the cylinder 3. 1
ed as properly, come heat thruein is absorbed all 2. The combination in a refrigerating system, of a cylinder having an inlet and an outlet, and having a supplemental chamber formed therein also provided with an inlet and an outlet distinct from said cylinder, a shaft in said cylinder, and spiral blades on said shaft and revoluble therewith to force a saline solution through said cylinder around said chamber, said chamber being l0 adapted for the vaporizing of a refrigerant.
3. As an article of manufacture, a cylineeama der, a front head, a rear head, an inwardly directed flange on one head, two cylindric: 1 sections spaced apart, rings therebetween for such spacing and forming a chamber distinct from said cylinder, said sections being carried by said flange, an inlet and an outlet for said cylinder, an inlet and an outlet for said chamber, a shaft arranged centrally of said cylinder and projecting therefrom, and spiral blades on said shaft.
