IMPROVEMENT IN STEAM-BOILERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,913, dated July 9, 1872.

Be it known that we, CHAS. ROGERS and ISAAC VANOE,.Of Pittsb'urg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Steam-Boilers and Furnaces; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing ,making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a vertical longitudinal section, Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section, Fig. 3 is a horizontal section, and Fig. 4 is a front elevation, of our invention.

This invention has relation to a combined steam-boiler and furnace for farm use; and it tween said steam-boxes and the main boiler,

all as and for the purpose hereinafter described.

In the drawing, A represents the furnace, in the upper part of which is arranged a horizontal steam-boiler, B, of a cylindrical form. This boiler is supported between the rectangular steam-boxes B, located on either side of the fire-box C. The steam-boxes and main boiler do not extend as far back as the rear end of the furnace, but leave spaces behind them for the circulation of heat and the passage of smoke. Between the outer sides of the steam-boxes and the sides of the furnace flues D are provided for the passage of heat. E represents partitions running along the sides and behind the main boiler. F represents openings between the forward ehd of the side partitions and the front wall of the furnace. G designates a wall at the back part of the fire-place. H indicates the furnace-grate, and I the ash-pan. J J designates pipes leading from the steam-boxes to the main boilers. The former run from the upper parts of the boxes to the upper part of the steam-boilers, and

the latter from the lower parts of the boxes to the lower part of the boiler. By these pipes free circulation is allowed to the steam and water.

The fire is kindled in the grate, and the heat passes behind the fire-boxes and on the outer sides thereof; thence it passes up through the openings F, along the sides of the main boiler, through the fiues F toward the rear end thereof, and finally escapes through the smokestack K. The latter is hinged to the furnace, and may be turned down to enable the flues to be cleaned, or the interior of the apparatus to be readily repaired. By the heat passing on both sides of the fire-boxes the water is boiled and the steam generated more quickly. The direct heat strikes the main boiler only on the bottom thereof. The upperpart is affected by the heat circulating through the flues; hence the water in the boiler may be allowed to fall to the depth of a few inches without danger.

L represents steam-cocks applied to the forward end of the main boiler.

The hot water or steam may be drawn off through properly-arranged tubes, and used for any desirable purposes.

M designates the boiler-head, secured to the boiler by means of bolts or rods n passing the entire length of the boiler.

What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The boiler, consisting of the horizontal cylindrical boiler B, steam-boxes B, partitions E, flues D F, openings F, pipes J J, and smoke-stack K, arranged substantially as and for the purpose described.
