JASPER BLACKBURN, .OF WEBSTER GROVES, MISSOURI.
CABLE-HANGER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 24:, 1918.
Applica'tion'filed August 26, 1916, Serial No. 117,082. Renewed June 17, 1918. Serial No. 240,530.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jnsrnn BLACKBURN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Webster Groves, Saint Louis county, Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cable-Hangers of which the following is a specification containing a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in cable hangers or holders wherein a. supporting device is-provided for a cable, and further-provided with means in the form of hooks for suspension from a messenger wire.
A further'object is to" provide a hanger formed from a single piece of elastic wire by suitable automatic machinery, said hanger being provided with a maximum contact surface when applied to the messenger to prevent creeping or sliding of the hanger over the messenger wire when the cable is being applied to the hangers.
A still further object is to construct a hanger which is used not only in the installation of new work, but may be applied for the support of existing cables, said hanger when in use having a series of supporting surfaces for the cable, so as to distribute the weight of the cable on more than one point.
With the above purposes in view, my in vention consists in certain novel details of the construction and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described, pointed out in my claims and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved hanger or holder applied to a messenger or supporting wire, the cable being shown in dotted lines;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of my hanger being applied to a messenger wire, illustrating the method of applying the same; and
Fig. 3 is an end view looking in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 1.
Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings:
l designates the body portion of the hanger, which comprises two substantially U-shaped portions (in plan view) 5 and 6, which are arranged side by side, as illustrated, said portions in end elevation being upwardly curved so as to provide a rounded or curved seat for the cable.
Formed integral with the U-shaped portion 5 is a branch arm 7, and formed integral with the U-shaped portion 6 is a branch arm 8, said arms 7 and 8 being curved in opposite directions.
The arm 7 is provided, near itsterminal portion, with a bent portion 9, a substantially straight semi-elastic portion 10, and with a hooked portion 11, these portions just referred to acting as contact, surfaces with the messenger or supporting wire when the same is applied for use.
The branch arm 8 is provided with an abruptly bent portion 12, which terminates in a substantially horizontal portion 13 and a hooked portion 14.
In the application of my improved holder or hanger the hooked portion 11 is first applied beneath the messenger or supporting wire, with the substantially straight portion 10 resting on the top surface of the mes senger wire. When in this position the branch arm 8 is in front of the messenger wire, as illustrated in Fig. 2, and a clownward force is applied until the hooked portion 14 passes beneath and in the rear of the messenger and is then engaged with it. The substantially horizontal portion 13 of the hooked portion 14: holds the hanger in position for use on the messenger.
It will be observed that my improved hanger has three contacts or gripping surfaces, namely, the bent portion 9, the substantially straight portion 10 and the hooked portion 11, thus providing sufilcient contact surface to prevent the hanger or holder from movement on the messenger wire.
It will further be observed that my improved hanger has three supporting surfaces for the cable, thus distributing the wei ht of the cable to three points.
I-faving thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein and desire to secure 2y Letters Patent of the United States thereor, 1s:
1. A cable hanger, comprising a body portion formed of substantially U-shapcd portions in plan and curved in end elevation, arms formed integral with said substantially U-shaped portions and curved in opposite directions, one of said arms being provided with an inwardly bent portion, a substantially straight portion adapted to extend over amess'enger wire and a hooked portion adapted to extend beneath a messenger wire, and the other arm provided with a hooked portion adapted to engage the messenger wire.
2. A cable hanger, provided with a body portion on which a cable is adapted to rest, oppositely curved arms formed integral with said body portion, one of said arms being provided with a bent portion adapted to engage a messenger wire on its side, a substan tially straight portion oi greater length than the'diameter of the messenger wire to which the hanger is applied arranged diagonally to the longitudinal axis of the messenger Wire and adapted to engage it on its top surface and a hooked portion formed integral with said substantially straight portion adapted to-engage amessenger Wire on its lower'surface, and theother of saidarms having formed integrally therewith a hooked --portion-adapted to engage with the messenger Wire.
3. A cable hanger, provided with a body portion, on which a cable is adapted to "rest and be supported, arms formed integral With 'saidbody portion, one of said arms being provided with a substantially straight portion, adapted to rest-on the top of a messenger and disposed diagonally of the messenger, said substantially straight portion being provided with a hook adapted to rest beneath the messenger, a bend interj aeent the armx and the substantially "straight portion engaging the messenger in opposition to said hook, the otherof said armsbeing provided with a substantially horizontal portion adapted to lie beneath and transversely of the messengerand held thereupon by the resiliency of the hanger, said :sub-
