To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THORWALD RETEN- HARDT SEGLEM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Duluth, in the county of St. Louis and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vacuum-Cup Supports; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make anduse the same.
My invention relates to improvements in vacuum cup support and has for one of its provision of a device capable of surfaces so as to retain a card or other device upon the smooth surfaces.
Another object of this invention is to provide a vacuum cup support formed of a single piece of flexible material such as rubber or the like and so constructed as to provide a depending arm which extends beyond the periphery ofthe cup whereby articles may be supported between'the terminal of the arm and the surface to which the cup is attached.
Another object of this invention is to provide a vacuum cup to which is pivotally secured a retaining arm whereby the arm may be moved out of engagement with the surface to which the cup is attached to permit an article to be readily supported between the terminal of this movable arm and the surface to which the cup is applied.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a vacuum cup of this kind, which pensive in construction and one that can be manufactured and sold at a low cost.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel combination andarrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and set forth in the claims hereto appended.

Like numerals and references designate like and corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawing.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 5 indicates a vacuum cup formed of suitable flexible material such as rubber or the like and it is substantially concavo-convexed in cross section. The convexed face of the cup is provided centrally with a substantially truncated attaching lug 6 which has its end terminating into a circular enlargement 7.
The flexible curved arm 8 is formed integrally with the wall of the circular enlargement 7 and 'has its free terminal extending downwardly beyond the periphery of the cup 5 and located in the plane thereof. It will be'apparent that the cup, circular enlargement, and arm are all an integral struc ture and formed from any suitable elastic material such as rubber or the like. The cup 5 when in use is adapted to be attached to a smooth surface such as a window or the like designated by the character A, and by pulling outwardly on the arm 8 from its medial portion it will leave a sufficient space to permit a card or the like designated B to be inserted between the terminal of this arm and the smooth surface whereby upon the releasing of the pressure upon the arm its terminal will engage the article and readily support the same to the surface A.
Referring to the modification illustrated suitableflexible material such as rubber or the like is designated by the numeral 9 and is substantially coneavo-eonvex in cross section and has formed centrally from its concaved face a truncated attaching lug 10.
A substantially U-shaped metal attaching plate 11 is fitted over and embraces the slde faces of the attaching lug 10 and is secured thereto by suitable fastening element 12 such as rivets, screws or the like. i
A supporting arm 13 formed of suitable metal has a curved body, the side edges of the body are inclined inwardly agalnst the under side thereof to reinforce and strengthen the arm intermediate its ends as at 14.- and the terminal of the arm is provided with a socket 15 in which is arranged a rubber plug 16 which is adapted to engage the smooth surface of the part to Which the vacuum cup 9 is attached. lt Will be understood that the socket 15 is located in spaced relation to the periphery of the cup 9 and the plug 16 extends inwardly beyond the inner convex face of the plug so as to aidord a pressure against an article which is adapted to be secured between the plug and surface to which the cup is attached.
The other terminal of the arm 13 has its side edges bent downwardly to provide attaching flanges 17 and these flanges are pivotally secured to the opposite sides of the U-shaped attaching plate and attaching lug 10 of the cup by a suitable pivot pin 18 which extends transversely through the flanges 1d of the ll-shaped plate 11 and truncated attaching lug 10 of the cup as clearly illustrated in Fig. 5 of the drawing.
It will be apparent that by virtue of pivotally securing this arm to the truncated lug of the cup 9 that the opposite end thereof will be located in a plane below and in spaced relation to the peripheral edge of the cup 9 and when it is desired to use the device all that is necessary to secure the cup 9 to a smooth surface by vacuum by applying pressure on the ends 1% and the arms 13 in the direction of the cup 9 the plug 18 'vvill be moved away from the surface a sufficient length or distance to permit an article such as a card or the like to be inserted between this plug and surface by releasing the pressure the plug will engage this article and retain the same to the surface to which the plug is attached.
Having thus described my I claim is:
l. A device of the class described C0111- prismg a vacuum cup of resilient material and concave-convert cross section, said cup having formed centrally in its convex face an outstandin attaching lug,, a U-shaped metal plate secured to said lug, and an arm pivotally secured to said plate and lug and having one end depending below and extending rearwardly beyond the peripheral edge of the concave face of said cup as for the purpose specified.
2. A device of the class described comprising a resilient vacuum cup substantially concave-convex in cross section and having an attaching lug formed centrally on its invention What manner convex face and extending outwardly theretrom, a substantially tel-shaped metal plate secured to said lug, a curved metal arm having a socket formed in one end thereof, a plug titted in said socket, the side edges 0t said arm at the opposite end being bent laterally adapted to be pivotally secured to i the opposite sides of said attaching plate, the socket and plug of said arm being located belovv and beyond the concave face of said cup as for the purpose specified.
8. A device of the class described comprising a resilient vacuum cup adapted for attachment to a relatively smooth surface said vacuum cup being substantially concavo-convex in cross section, said cup having formed centrally on its convex face a truncated attaching lug; a substantially shaped metallic plate secured to said lug and having a pair of alining apertures extending therethrough; a curved metal'arm having one end thereof terminating in a socket; a plug fitted in said socket; depending apertured ears carried by the opposite end or the curved arm and adapted to be arranged over said Ll-shaped metallic plate; a pin extending through the apertures in said U-shaped plate and the apertured ears of said arm; and spring means adapted to press the other end of said arm into engagement with an article to be supported.
e- A device ot the class described comprising a resilient vacuum cup adapted "for attachment to a relatively smooth surface, said vacuum cup being substantially concavo-convex in cross section and having termed centrally on its convenface a substantially truncated attaching lug; an arm pivotally secured to said vacuum cup and having its outer end thereof extending beyond the periphery or said cup and in spaced relation thereto, said arm beingarcuate in shape and adapted to function as a support; and spring means adapted to cause the outer end portion of said arm to normally extend below the peripheral edge of said vacuum cup.
