To all whomz't may concern Be it known that we, FRANK KUHN and JAY A. HANm both citizens of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of l/Vayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Foot-Warmers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

lhis invention relates to a foot warmer and is designed for use by aviators and motorists or others following vocations requiring exposures to extremes of cold.

It is the object of the invention to associate heating elements with a. pair of shoes or other footwear preferably in a detachable relation so that the feet of the wearer will be protected against the danger and discomfort resulting from exposure to cold.

Figure 1 is a top view of a heating element having the nature of an insole detachably insertible in an ordinary shoe;

Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the heel portion of a shoe provided with contacts engageable by those carried by said modified insole; Fig. 6 is a sectional view of the modified construction, the section being taken on line 66 of Fig. 5.

Referring now in detail to the invention as disclosed in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the reference character 1 designates a shoe and 2 a heating element insertible in said shoe and having the nature of an insole comprising two flexible insulatoryplates, the edges of which are stitched together as indicated at 3 and between which a resistor 4 is arranged to trace a circuitous course, said resistor being preferably formed of a braided wire so that it may have the requisite flexibility.

projecting contacts 5 having the nature of metallic strips, said strips lying closely adjacent the inner face of the upper of the shoe when the insole is in place. The upper extremities of the contacts 5 are adapted to be detachably engaged by S-shaped connectors 6 formed of spring-metal and adapted to clamp upon the upper edge portions of the shoe, as seen in Fig. 2. Each of said connectors has a portion adapted to extend within the engaged shoe and is formed at its lower extremity with a sleeve 7 to receive the corresponding strip 5. Exteriorly of the engaged shoe each connector 6 is provided with a portion slotted vertically, as indicated at 8, said slot being adapted to receive the neck portionof a stud 9 projecting from the terminal sleevelO of a conductor 11. The relative proportioning of the studs 9 and members 6 is such that [lie slotted portion of either member 6 will be sprung out from the central portion thereof by the head of the engaging stud so that there will be resistance to displacement of the stud from said connector. The central portion of the connector is concaved, as indicated at 12, for engagement with said stud and when said engagement is established the member 10 may be swiveled about the axis of the stud to assume any desired angle without disturbing the electrical connection. Such a connection is highly desirable where the feet of the person using the described device must operate one or more foot pedals, and consequently provision for play is necessary at the point of connection of the conductors to the shoe.

In the modification of Figs. 4 to 6 the resistor embedded in the detachable insole is provided with terminal contacts 13 of disk shape upon the under face of said insole, said contacts engaging the heads of screws 14 in the heel portion of the shoe when the insole is in place. The screws 14 respectively. engage contact plates 15 which are embedded in the heel of the shoe at each side thereof, projectinglaterally sufficiently to engage any suitable fixed contacts (not shown). 1

It will be observed that in either form of the invention the electrical conductors may be very quickly attached or detached from the heating element; and furthermore that the heating element may, if desired, be

extending from said element, and a pair of members secured to the shoe having provision interiorly thereof for engagin said terminals, and an exterior provision or engaging lead wires.

A foot warmer comprising a shoe, a heating element carried thereby adjacent the sole thereof, a pair of terminals upwardly extending from said element, and a pair of spring clips secured to the shoe havmg provision therewithin for quick detachable engagement with said terminals,- and providin exterlorly of the shoe for engagement wit lead wires.

A foot warmer, comprising a shoe, a detachable insole for said shoe, a heating element carried by said insole, terminal contacts for said element carried by the insole, and a pair of connectors detachably engageable with the upper edge of the'shoe and detachably engaged by 'said terminal contacts. 6. A foot warmer, comprising a shoe, a

heating element carried thereby, terminal contacts for said element extending into proximity to the upper edge of the shoe, and

a air of connectors detachably engaged with said edge and detachably engaging said terminal contacts.

7. A foot warmer, comprising a shoe, a

heating element carried thereby adjacent the sole thereof, terminal contacts mounted upon the edges of the shoe, means for electrically connecting said contacts with said heating element, and means for swivelly connecting conductors with said contacts.

8. A foot warmer, comprising a shoe, a heating element carried thereby, a pair of S-shaped connectors, each of said connectors having one of its return-bent portions detachably engaging the upper edge of the shoe and having its other return-bent portion slotted to receive a conductor, the connectorsbeing concaved opposite said slots to form a swivel seat for said conductor. v In testimony whereof we afiix our slgna- FRANK KUHN.
