Application filed September To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMANUEL JACOBS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Razor- Strops, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a razor stropping machine, and my invention aims to provide a small and portable machine that may be manually operated to sharpen the edge of a razor blade placed in the machine, the razor blade being held in a position so that the edge thereof will be disposed to be sharpened first on one side and then the other.
My invention further aims to provide a razor stropping machine including a reciprocable carrier and rotatable sharpening or grinding elements arranged to be revolved in synchrouism with a reciprocation of the carrier. The carrier is furthermore constructed so that either one of the sharpening or grinding elements may be brought, into action by simply reversing the position of the carrier, and this is accomplished by the same means employed for revolving the sharpening or grinding elements of the carrier.
My invention still further aims to accomplish the above results by a machine consisting of comparatively few parts that are easy to assemble, inexpensive to manufacture, and highly efhcient for the purposes for which they are intended. The parts of the machine, as well as the function of each part, will be hereinafter considered and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of the razor stropping machine, showing the carrier in a shifted position by dotted lines;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross sectional view of the carrier of the machine, and
Fig. 3 is an end view of the machine.
In describing m r invention by aid of the views above referred to, I desire it to be understood that the structural details shown are merely an example of the actual machine, and that the following description is to be broadly construed as including such constructions and arrangements of parts as are the obvious equivalents of those to be hereinafter referred to Specification of Letters Patent.

In the drawing, the reference numeral 1 denotes a metallic base plate, preferably rectangular in plan, and soldered, riveted or otherwise mounted on said base plate is a blade holder 4.- and uprights 6. The blade holder 4 is disposed longitudinally of the base plate 1 and comprises side plates 7 having the upper edge thereof projecting above the holder 4 so as to form a channel to receive a razor blade 8. The upper edges of the side plates 7 are sprung outwardly when the blade 8 is inserted between the side plate 7 and this is accomplished by shifting the razor blade endwise in the blade holder. The upper edges of the 'side plates 7 will frictionally engage the side walls of the razor blade and firmly hold the same while the edge thereof is ground or sharpened.
The uprights 6 are rectangular in cross section and are set to one side of the plane of the blade holder 4 and adjustable on said uprights are non-rotatable brackets 9 and 10 held by set screws 11. The brackets are somewhat in the form of clevises or yokes and fixed in the bracket 9 by a cotter pin 12 or other fastening means is one end of a rod 13 and the opposite end of the rod extends toward the bracket 10 and into a sleeve 14 free to rotate in said bracket, the sleeve 14 being loosely retained in the bracket by a cotter pin 15 or other fastening means.
Mount d in the outer end of the sleeve 14 is a crank 16 provided with a suitable knob or handle 17 by which the sleeve may be rotated and reciprocated relative to the rod 13 and the bracket 10.
On the inner end of the'sleeve 14 is a carrier, comprising parallel triangular shaped plates 18 and 19 connected by rivets or other fastening means 20 and spaced apart by sleeves 21 on said fastening means. Engaging the outer side of the plate 18 is a gear wheel 23, which is fixed relative to the sleeve 14 so as to rotate therewith. A coiled compression spring 24 encircles the sleeve 14 between the side plate 18 and a collar 30 fixed on said sleeve in spaced relation to the side plate 19. The expansive force of the spring will frictionally hold the side plate 18 in engagement with the gear wheel 23. so that when the sleeve 14 is partially rotated, the carrier may be swung from one side of the razor blade 8 .to the other side thereof, and yet permit of the gear wheel 23 being rotated when the the sides. of the razor carrier is held stationary against the side of the razor blade 8.
Shafts 25 are journaled in the side plates 18 and 19 and said shafts have gear WllQGlS 26 meshing With the gear Wheel 93, the train of gears being at the outer side of the plate 18. The shafts 25 are provided with strepping, grinding or sharpening Wheels or rolls 27, and said rolls are driven in tie same direction When the sleeve 14: is rotated.- lhe rolls 27 are disposed so that one of said rolls may engage one side of the razor blade 8 and when the carrier is swung over to the opposite side of the razor blade, the other roll is brought into action. Both rolls will have an outward grinding action on the razor blade and during such action the sleeve may be reciprocated so that the razor blade will be equally ground throughout 'ts length. The rolls 27 may be made of compactly assembled disks or"- leather, so that the action of said rolls relative to the edge 01' the razor Will be practically the same it the razor blade were dra vvn back and forth upon an ordinary strop. Then again. the rolls may. be of an abrasive material so that the edge oftherazor may, be actually ground.
from the foregoing, it will be obsew'ed that the spring E l constitutes frictional means on the sleeve for shifting the carrier from one side or the razor blade to the other side and that such friction means does not interfere with the operation of the rain of gears for imparting movement to the stropping rolls'oi the carrier. Since the brackets 9 and it) are adjustable on the uprights (5, it possible to correctly posit-ion the carrier relative to a razor blade in the holder l, and in this manner the stropping rolls may be correctly positioned to properly engage blade.
What I claim is 1. A machine of the type described comprising a rod, a rotatable and reciprocable sleeve on said rod, a carrier on said sleeve, stroppinp; rolls journaled in said carrier and adapted to have movement imparted thereto by rotation of said sleeve, and means for supporting razor blade so that either side thereol may be operated. upon bv the stropping rolls of said carrier.

A machine of the type described comprising a razor blade holder, an adjustable rod in proximity to said razor blade holder, a rotatable sleeve slidable on said rod, a carrier on said sleeve adapted to be shifted from one side of said razor blade holder to the other side thereof by partial rotation of said sleeve, and rolls in said carrier adapted to be driven by complete rotation of said sleeve.

A machine of the type described com,- prising a plate, a razor blade holder on said base plate, a rotatableyand reciprocable sleeve, means for adjustably support-r ing' said sleeve relative to said razor blade holder. a carrier on said sleeve, and rolls journaled in said carrier adapted to have movement imparted thereto by said sleeve.
