EXHAUST-SWITCH.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED HAATVEDT, a citizen of the United States, residing at White Sulphur Springs, in the county of Meagher and State of Montana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Exhaust-Switches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for diverting exhaust steamfrom the cylinder to the smoke stack of an engine or to waste and the principal object of the invention relates to a casing provided with aplurality of ports and a novel construction of valve for controlling said ports.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is simple and durable in construction reliable and efficient in operation and one which can be manufactured and placed upon the market at a minimum cost.
The invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is an elevation of the invention.

Fig. 4 is a view showing the inner face of the cover plate.
As shown in the drawings the invention consists of a casing 1 provided with an inlet 2 which is to be connected with the exhaust from the cylinder so that the exhaust steam coming from the cylinder will flow into said casing. The opposite end of the casing is provided with an outlet 3 which is to be connected by a suitable tubing with blast means in the smoke stack. As this blast means forms no part of the invention and is well known it will not be described in detail. The outlet 3 is provided with a curved part 4 which enters the rear side of the casing as at 5. 6 represents another outlet on the rearward side or face of the casing located in a plane below and to one side of the outlet 5. is of substantially triangular shape and the outlet 5 is in the upper corner while the outlet 6 is in a lower corner thereof In the other corner of the casing below the opening 5 is journaled a shaft 7 which passes through the casing'and is provided -with an operating lever 8 which is adapted to receive suitable connections leading to the cab of the engine. A disk valve 9 is secured to the shaft within the casing and is adapted to cover either one of the outlets 5 and 6. The valve 9 is provided with a projecting tab 10 to which the shaft 7 is connected. The valve is provided with a groove 11 in its front face to receive a pack ing ring 12 which is held pressed against the inner face of the rear side of the casing by means of coil springs 13 located in openings 14 formedin the valve and adjusted therein by means of the screw threaded bolts 15. The ends of these bolts project from the rear face of the valve. This rear face of the valve is provided with a cen tral socket 16 which receives a pin 17 adapted to engage a curved path 18 formed on the inner face of the cover 19 of the casing. Said plug is held in engagement with the path by a spring 20 located in the socket 16. In this way the valve is pressed against the rear of the casing and the packing ring is also held pressed against the same. Thus a tight fit is secured between the valve and the rear of the casing to prevent the passage of steam through the port or opening closed by the valve. The valve disk is secured to the shaft 7 by means of a nut 21 and a key 22. A packing box 23 is located at a point where the shaft enters the casing.
The lever 8 is adjustably secured to the end of the shaft 7 by means of the toothed members 21 and a nut 25.
The exhaust steam coming from the cylinder will pass into the casing and from said casing will pass into the smoke stack or will flow to waste through the port 6 according to the position of the valve. Of course if desired the valve may be so located as to partially cover each port so as to allow some of the steam to enter the smoke stack while the rest of the steam goes to waste.
Thus the blast may be controlled by the Way the engineer may regulate the draft or cut ofi'the flow of steam to the blast means entirely.
It is thought from the foregoing descrip- 'tion that the advantages and novel features i J several parts, provided that such changes fall Within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is 1. A device of the class described comprising a casing having an inlet port and a pair of outlet ports in one side thereof, a fiat valve controlling said ports, a packing ring in the face of said valve, adjustable spring means for forcing said ring outwardly, a spring controlled plug carried by said valve and engaging the opposite side of the casing for holding the valve with its face in contact with the port side of the casing and means for oscillating said valve.
2. A device of the class described comprising an inlet port and a pair of outlet ports in one side thereof, a curved path formed on the opposite side of said casing, a flat valve having a projecting tab, a shaft connected with said tab for oscillating the valve to control said outlet ports, said valve having a circular groove in its front face, a ring in said groove, spring means for forcing said ring outwardly, a plug carried by the other face of said valve and engaging the path and spring means for forcing said plug against said path.
