have made a certain new and useful Invenl -tion Relating to Automatic ChemicalFlre- Extinguishing Apparatus, of which the following is a specication, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, which forms part of the same.
This invention relatesespecially to automatic fire extinguishing apparatus in which the distributing system may comprise automatic sprinkler heads, hose connections or '1 5 other distributing devices and be connected with .a supply tank or other supply of extinguishing liquid .to be'discharged from the system undersuitable pressure. The distributing system may be of any desired form and may as indicated comprise one or more suitable supply pipesor risers 1 and connected distributing pipes, such as 2, upon which automatic sprinkler heads or other distributing devices 3 may be arranged at suitable intervals. By this arrangement when flow occurs` in the' connected distributing sys'- tem the differential check valve tends to 'cause the first flow, of liquid to take place varound the by-pass through the'lVenturi de' vice therein so as to cause by this Venturi or jet'action a suction yor relative reduction of pressure within the Venturi chamber 63 to which -a suitable emergency or control device may be connected in anydesired way.
As indicated the emergency device may comprise the control chamber or pressure chamber 24 with which the movable control or diaphragm member 25 coperates so as to be normally under considerable pressure from the distributing system and on pressure reduction to move by its resiliency, and also aided if desired by a suitable spring, such as 35, which may coperate with this diaphragm member in any way as by engaging With a flange 34 on the control stem 36 connected thereto. Any suitable actuating connection may be used between this emergency device and the Venturi jet actuating device, such, for example, as the actuating connection or pipe 10 communicating wlth the control chamber and having, if desired, the cut-off valve 11 therein.
If desired another liquid Osupply may be used in connection with the distributing system in addition to or instead of the pressure or gravity tank, and a city water supply or other supply of liquid under ressure may be used in this connection. T e secondary supply pipe 51, for example, may be connected to the distributing system in any desired way and may be used to supply thereto city water under suitable pressure either instead of or in connection with the primary supply tank of the pressure or gravity type previously referred to. It 1s desirable especially where both these supplies vare simultaneously connected to the distributing system t0 arrange a suitable check valve 59 in the secondary supply pipe and a similar check valve 64 in the primary supply pipe, both opening inward toward the distrib- Auting system. The secondary supply pipe may also be provided with a shut-off valve 48 so that in this way'e-ither one of these liquid supplies may be used separately. As shown in the drawing, a generally similar flow actuating device of the jet or Venturi type may be used in connection with this secondary supply pipe, so that in the event of iiow therethrough when the distributing system comes into emergency action a suitable pressure reduction o r suction actuationwill take place so as to operate any connected emergency devices. The Venturi device may be arranged in a suitable by-pass around the supply pipe check valve 49 1n this secondary supply pipe 51, this check valve being nor'- `mally held closed by a spring 50 which produces a slight differential action. The Venturi device arranged as indicated in the bypass around this check valve may comprise the substantially alinednozzles 45,46 arranged in the Venturi or suction chamber 44 so that when How of liquid first occurs through this secondary supply ipe the ilow tends to take place through this y-pass Venturi device so as to cause in the Venturi chamber a comparative suction or pressure reduction, so that it may be used to operate any emergency or control device of the general character described. If desired, such a pressure chamber control device as described may be simultaneously connected to several such Venturi actuating devices, the actuating c'onnection or pi e 43 in which the cut-off valve 62 is refera ly arranged servingvto connect the enturi chamber 44 with the control chamber 24. Under these circumstances, however, it is desirable in some cases to interpose suitable check valves in these actuating connections and the check valves 19, 2O may be mstalled therein, preferably adjacent the control chamber so as to open and allow liquid to flow therefrom as indicated by the arrows. In order to take care of incidental expansion or other slight flow of a less character than the emergency actuating movements of liquid through these actuating connections, it is sometimes desirable to have suitable equalizing connections around these controlcheck valves and for this purpose the equallzlng connection 17 may be arranged around the control check valve 19 so as to normally give a pin-hole or small area equalizing passage around the same as controlled by the adjustable needle valve 18 or the like and allow slow equalizing movements of liquid around this check valve in either direction between the actuating connection or pipe 10 and its extension 22. The adjustable small area or pin hole equalizing connection 21 may be similarly arranged around the control check valve 20.between the actuating connection 43 and its extension 23 adjacent the control chamber 24.
The emergency devices may be used to supply to the distributing system additional extinguishing liquid under fire conditions,
and for this purpose the emergency device may be arranged to put in operation a chemical supply tank so as to give a specially high pressure discharge of extinguishing liquid yfor a short time so as to be still more effective for extinguishing purposes during the initial stages. The chemical mixing tank 38 may have any suitable capaclty and construction and may contain carbonate solution 42 to the desired extent, any suitable chemical mixing devices being arranged so as to mix or combine the soda with the acid and secure by result-ing chemical action the desired high pressure in this tank. These mixing devices may comprise a tipping acid container 37 which may be actuated in any way from the control device as by havlng its upper end engaged by the control stem 36 so that when the emergency or control device operates so as to move this stem upward the acid container is released and the acid discharged therefrom in the desired way to produce the high chemically generated gas pressure and force the liquid out of this chemical supply tank through a suitable connection at pressures as great as several hundred pounds per square inch,

if` desired; The chemical supply tank may with advantage be connected with the distributing system through an automatic venting connection which may comprise the depending end 27 of'this connection with the supply tank which may have a. lower end 39 adjacent the tank bottom. A suitable check or automatic stop valve 26 is preferably, arranged in this venting connection to prevent liquid` from .the distrib-4 uting system entering the chemical supplyA -which. Ais preferably normally open so as to give at least a small opening at this .point while it is automatically closed by the'connected iioat 40 assoon as liquid enters this part of the connection.- A suitable airl escape Venting aperture 61 may alsobe provided in this connection` between thecheck valve and liquid leveland preferably within the tank adjacent its upper portion as indi# cated so as to give a.pin-ho le or small area air venting openingjat this point.

Under these conditions if au air venting aperture has been used in this tank connection it should be closed by suitable means which may be connected to the same mechanism operating the automatic shut-off valve or to any other devices a such, for example, as the vent shut-off valve 65 which may be pivotally mounted adjacent the venting aperture 61 and have connected theretojthe float 66 which as soon as the liquid level in the tank lfalls a few inches, for instance, closes this venting aperture and prevents any further escape 0f air or gasftherethrough.

This Aalarm which may if desired be pneumatically operated bv lbeing connected tothe air space in the tank may comprise any formjof pneumatic alarm or whistle 56 ar :ranged at any convenient or desired point and connected with the upper air space in the tank 38 by the small area pipe 55 of .event of the operation of the chemical mixsuch size as not to unduly lower the gas pressure produced by this chemical action. For some purposes, especially where the fire Vis veryslight and only slight discharge of extinguishing liquid occurs from a hose connection, for instance, it is rather advantageous to have the gas pressure in the chemical tank relieved and this may be auto .maticaly effected by the action of such a pneumatic alarm, for example. If,fhow ever, a considerable amount of the extinguishing liquid Ais required it is undesirable to allow very much of this gas produced by the chemical action referred to to escape and for this reason it is desirable to use an automatic shut-off valve or device to stop the escape of fluid through this pneumatic alarm under such conditions. The oat shut-off valve 54 may be arranged for this purpose and connected with the float 53 supported in the liquid 42 in the chemical supply tank, so that when any desired portion of this liquidis drawn o' this shut-oli:l valve closes and further escape of gas through the pneumatic alarm ceases, after for instance the liquid level in the tank has fallen six inches or more.
It will be understood from the foregoing description that the distributing system is normally filled with water or other suitable non-freezing liquid under working pressure which is maintained by the supply tank or other source of supply and is always effective to operate the distributing devices in the system in caseoll fire. As soon as such emergency operation begins the resulting flow of liquid throu h the supply pipes or other parts of the istributing system operates through such flow actuating devices as have been described to actuate a suitable emergency or control device which may be used not only to give an alarm of any desired character, but also to start the action of a pressure supply tank which may be of the chemical mixing type, and quickly furnish to the distributing system a supplemental supply of extinguishing liquid under considerably higher pressure if desired so as to have a still more effective extinguishing action for a considerable time, the check valves in the supply pipes connecting the distributing system to the primary supply tank or other source of extinguishing liquid being preferably automatically shut at this time to prevent any undesirable reduction of this high chemical pressure. When the extinguishing liquid in the chemical supply tank isl substantially exhausted the connection between this tank and the distributing system may be automatically closed so that the other liquid supplies to the system are thus allowed to instantly come into action and continue the discharge of liquid from the operating distributing devices.
This invention has been described in connection with a number of illustrative embodiments, forms, elements, materials, parts and arrangements, to the details of which disclosure the invention is not of course to be limited, Since what is claimed as new and what is desired to be secured by Letters Patent is set forth in the appended claims.
1. In automatic sprinkler apparatus, aA distributing system comprising automaticy actuating device arranged in a by-pass around said supply pipe check valve, a secondary supply pipe connected to said distributing system and having therein a secondary supply ipe check-valve and a Venturi actuating evice arranged in a by-pass around said secondary supply pipe check valve, an emergency device comprising a control chamber, a coperating movable control member, actuating connections between said Venturi actuating devices and said control chamber, said actuating connections each comprising a control check valve and apin-hole equalizing connection arranged in a by-pass around said control check valve, and a supplemental supply of extinguishing liquid comprising a chemical supply tank having chemical mixing devices arranged to be operated by said control member.
2. In automatic sprinkler apparatus,'a distributing system comprising distributing devices, a primary supply tank connected to said distributing system, a supply pipe check valve in said distributing system adjacent said supply tank, a Venturi actuating device arranged in a by-pass around said supply pipe check valve, a secondary supply pipe connected to said distributing system, said supply pipe having therein a secondary supply pipe check valve anda Venturi actuating device arranged in a bypass around said secondary supply pipe check valve, an emergency device comprising a control chamber, a coperating movable control member, and actuating connections between said Venturi actuating devices and said control chamber, said actuating connections each comprising a control valve.
3. In automatic sprinkler apparatus, a distributing system comprising distributing devices, a primary supply tank connected to said distribu-ting system, a supply pipe valve in said distributing system adjacent said supply tank, a Venturi actuating device arranged in a by-pass around said supply pipe check valve, a secondary supply pipe connected to said distributing system and having therein a secondary supply pipe check valve and a Venturi actuating device arranged in a by-pass around said secondary supply pipe valve, a coperating movable control member, and actuating connections between said Venturi actuating devices and said control chamber, said actuating connections each comprising a control check valve.
4. In automatic sprinkler apparatus, a distributing system, a primary supply connected to said distributing system, a check valve, a supply pipe valve in said distributing system adjacent said primary supply, a Venturi flow actuating device arranged in connection with said supply pipe, a secondary supply pipe connected to said distributing system and having therein a secondary supply pipe valve, a Venturi iow actuating device arranged in connection with said secondary supply pipe, anemergency device and actuating connections between said Venturi actua-ting devices and said control device, said actuating connections each comprising a control check valve and a pin-hole equalizing connection arranged around said control check valve.

In automatic' sprinkler apparatus, a distributing system comprising automatic distributing devices, a primary extinguishing liquid supply tank connected to said distributing system, a supply pipe check valve in said distributing system adjacent said supply tank, aVenturi jet flow actuating device arranged in a by-pass around said supply pipe check valve, an emergency control device comprising a movable control member, an actuating connection between said actuating device and said control delvice chamber, a supplemental chemical supply tank having chemical mixing devices arranged to be operated when said control device is operated by said actuating device and a connection between said chemical supply tank and said distributing system comprising a check ,valve and an automatic venting drain device between said check valve and tank.l

In automatic sprinkler apparatus, a distributing system comprising distributing dc"ices, a primary extinguishing liquid supply comprising a tank connected adjacent the top of said distributing system, a supply pipe check Valve in said distributing system adjacent said supply, a jet flow actuating device arranged in a by-pass around said supply pipe check valve, an emergency control device comprising a movable control member, an actuating connection between said actuating device and said control device, a connected chemical supplemental supply tank arranged to be operated when said control device is operated by said actuating device, and a connection between said chemical supply tank and said distributing system.

In automatic sprinkler apparatus, a distributing system comprising dlstributing devices, a primary extinguishing liquid supply connected to said distributing system, a Venturi jet flow actuating device arranged in connection with said distributing system to be operated by flow therethrough,.and a supplemental extinguishing fluid supply comprising a chemical pressure supply tank having chemical mixing devices arranged to be operated by said actuating devi-ce.

In automatic sprinkler apparatus, a distributing system comprising distributing devices, a primary extinguishing liquid supply connected to said distributing system, a jet flow actuating device arranged in connection with said distributing system to be operated by i'low therethrough and a supplemental extinguishing fluid supply comprising a supply tank arranged to be operated by said actuating device.

In automatic sprinkler apparatus, a distributing system charged with extinguishing liquid and comprising distributing devices, a primary extinguishing liquid supply connected to said distributing system, a jet flow actuating device arranged in connection with said distributing system to be operated by flow therethrough and a supplemental extinguishing fluid supply arranged t0 be operated by said actuating device.

In automatic ire extinguishing apparatus, a distributing system normally charged with extinguishing liquid and comprising automatic sprinkler heads and hose distributing devices, a primary supply of extinguishing liquid comprising a supply tank connected to a. supply pipe of said distributing system to maintain effective pressure therein, a Venturi flow actuating device eooperating with said supply pipe to cause a reduction pressure change on the beginning of flow through said supply pipe under emergency conditions, a supplemental supply of extinguishing liquid comprising a chemical pressure supply tank, an automatically closing venting connection between said pressure supply tank and said distributing system, chemical mixing devices in said tank, means connected to said actuating device to operate said mixing devices, an automatic shut-oli' valve in said pressure supply tank and a connected float in said tank to automatically close said connection and shut oil discharge into the distributing system when the liquid in said tank approaches exhaustion, a pneumatic alarm connectedlto the air space of said tank to give an alarm by pneumatic pressure from said tank under emergency conditions and a float shut-off valve in said tank to stop escape ot' pressure through said alarm when the liquid in said tank is exhausted to the desired extent.

In automatic tire extinguishing apparatus, a distributing system normally charged with extinguishing liquid and comprising distributing devices, a primary supply of extinguishing liquid connected to a supply pipe of said distributing system to maintain effect-ive pressure therein, ajet flow actuating device coperating with said supply pipe to cause a pressure change on thel beginning of flow-through said supplypipe under emergency conditions, a supplemental supply of extinguishing liquid comprising a chemical pressure supply tank. a connection between said pressure supply tank and said distributing system, chemical mixing devices in said tank, and means connected to said control member to operate said mixing devices.

In automatic fire extinguishing apparatus, a distributing system comprising distributing devices, a primary supply of extinguishing liquid connected to a supply pipe of said distributing system, a jet flow actuating device coperating with said supply pipe to cause a pressure change on' the beginning of flow through said supply pipe under emergency conditions, a supplemental supply of extinguishing liquid comprising a chemical pressure supply tank, a connection between said pressure supply tank and said distributing system, chemical mixing devices in said tank, and means connected to said control member to operate said mixing devices.

In automatic ire extinguishing apparatus, a Wet pipe distributing system comprising automatic distributing devices, a primary supply of extinguishing liquid comprising a supply tank connected `to a supply pipe of said distributing system to maintain normal Working pressure therein, a Venturi jet How actuating device coperating With said supply pipe to cause a reduction pressure change on the beginning of flow of liquid through said supply pipe under emergency conditions, a supplemental supply of extinguishing liquid comprising a chemical pressure supply tank, an automatic venting connection between said supplemental supply and said distributing system, chemical mixing devices in said tank and means coperating with said actuating device to operate Said supplemental supply.

In automatic fire extinguishing apparatus, a distributing system normally charged with extinguishing liquid and comprising automatic distributing devices, a primary supply of extinguishing liquid comprising a supply tank connected to a supply pipe of said distribution system to'normally maintain effective liquid pressuretherein, a connected emergency device comprising a control member actuated under emergency conditions of the system, a supplemental supply of extinguishing liquid comprising a chemical pressure suppIy tank, an automatic venting connection comprising a check valve between saidipressure supply tank and said distributing system comprising an air ventin aperture communicating with said tank adjacent the upper portion thereof, a vent shut-oli" valve coperating with said aperture, a'va'lve and connected float to automatically close said aperture when the liquid level descendsin said tank, chemical mixing devices in said tank comprising a tipping acid container, control means connected tol said controlmember to operate said mixing devices, and a-n automatic shut-off valve in saidv pressure supply tank and a vali-ve and connected oat iii said tank to automatically close said connection and shut on" discharge from said tank into the distributing system when the liquid in said tank approaches exliaustion.

In automatic re extinguishing appara-tus, a distributing system normally charged with extinguishing liquid and comprising automatic distributing devices, a. prniary supply ot' extinguishing liquid connected to a supply pipe of said distributing system to normally maintain effective liquid pressure therein, a connected emergency device comprisinga control member actuated under emergency conditions of the system, a supplemental supply of extinguishing liquid comprising a chemical pressure supply tank, an automatic venting connection comprising a check valve between said pressure supply tank aiid said distributing system comprising an air venting aperture in said tank adjacent the upper portion thereof, a vent shut-off valve coperating with said aperture, a connected float to automatically close said aperture when the liquid level descends iii said tank, chemical mixing devices, control means connected to said control member A to operate said mixing devices, and an automatic shut-oil valve in said pressure supply tank and a connected ioat in said tank to automatically close said Vconnection and shut ott discharge from said tank into the distributing system when the liquid in said tank approaches exhaustion.

In automatic tire extinguishing apparatus. a distributing system normally charged with extinguishing liquid and comprising automatic distributing devices, a primary supply of extinguishing liquid connected to a supply pipe of said distributing system, a connected emergency device comprising a control member actuated under emergency conditions of the system, a supplemental supply of extinguishing liquid comprising a chemical pressure supply tank, a connection between said pressure supply tank and said distributing system, chemical mixing devices, control means connected to said control member to operate said mixing devices, and an automatic shut-oft' valve in said pressure supply tank and a connected float in said tank to'automatically close said connection and shut off discharge from said tank into the distributing system when the liquid in said tank approaches exhaustion.

In re extinguishing apparatus, a distributing system, a connected chemical liquid supply tank and connected means to automatically create a high pressure in said tank under emergency conditions of the system and discharge liquid from said tank into the system, a pressure relief device connected to the air space of said tank and means comprising a {ioat to close said relief device and stop further reduction of pressure. therethrough lwhen the liquid in said tank isexliausted to the desired extent.

In fire extinguishing apparatus, a distributing system, a connected supplemental supply of extinguishing liquid comprising a chemical pressure tank, chemical mixing devices coperating with said tank and automatically operating on the emergency condition of said system and a venting connection communicating with the outside air and connected to the air space of said tank and means to automatically close said venting connection when a portion of the liquid in said tank has been withdrawn.

In tire extinguishing apparatus, a distributing system, a connected supplemental supply of extinguishing liquid comprising a gaseous pressure tank automatically operating on the emergency condition of said system and a pressure relief device connected to the air space of said tank and means to automatically close said relief device when a portion of the liquid in said tank has been withdrawn.
