Actuating the starting lever 39 to operate the machine will also cause its notch 52 tp engage the locking lever 36 and thus temporarilv connect the machine ope 'ating mechanism with the stop mechanism to start the machine. The needle is brought in contact with the record as usual and the star wheel will continue running idle until released by the inward travel of the tone arm whose underlying lever 43 will engage'the trip lever arm 27. through the medium of the flexible spring 4-3", and turn the segment lever on its p iiiot-al support in the direction of arrow 7). Fig. 1, until the contact between the screw 30 and the bottom of the forked opening of the lever 46 is suliiciently broken to permit the spring 52 to actuate the frame 8. and bring the pinion 10 into mesh with the large gear 11.
The contact of the spring 4:3 with the arm :27 will also tilt the trip lever 2i and cause its roller. ,30. Fig. l, to elevate the trip rod 33 whose underlying teeth 53 is adapted at the proper time. to engage the blade 54: located at the bottom of the narrow slot of the swivel block 32.
When the end of the disk record has been reached. the inward movement of the needle arm will cease. but the geared mechanism will continue in operation long enough to release the trip lever 2% from its contact with the spring 43 on the driver 43 and permit. the trip lever to drop. This will also allow the trip rod 33 to drop with the underlying teeth .33 in contact with the blade 54. and thus effect a direct pull on the locking lever 36 and release the same from the notch 52 of the starting lever 39, so that the spring 56 can rotate said lever and bring the entire mechanism of the machine into a state of rest. When thetone arm is being manually returned, the driver 43 will engage the roller 57, underlying the extension 58 of the lever 22, and cause a reverse movement of the segment lever until the driver 43 can clear itself from the roller 57. This will leave the segment lever in the proper position to be picked up again by the spring of driver 43. The tone arm is now free and at liberty to engage a record of any dimension.
The sole purpose of the actuating mechanism, located between .the segment lever and the driver 5. is to continue the t 'avel of the segment lever and carry the arm 27 away from the haltedtone arm far enough for the trip lever and its roller 30 to drop. and
permit the teeth of the trip rod to engage the blade 54 and release the locking lever 36. The object of the frictional pinion 17 is to compensate for any difference between the travel of the needle or tone arm and the large gear 11. In other words, it is not. necessary that the inward movement of the tone, arm
be accurately timed with the rotation of the gear 11. as the pinion will readily slip to compensate for any difference that may occur.
As the track of records are more or less wavy, the tone arm must necessarily follow any irregularity of this kind. To enable the tone arm to move in accordance with the wavy track of the record. I employ the light sensitive spring 43', which contacts with the arm 27 of the trip lever mechanism. This spring will enable the tone arm to have whatever vibration is necessary to conform to the irregular track of the record and also exert sutlicient pressure'to actuate the segment lever.
As before mentioned, the mechanism above described is adapted to automatically stop the machine at the end of a record regardless of its size. The point of stoppage for the tone arm is always at the end of a record, whether the record be short or-long. and the tripping of the locking lever cannot take place until after the tone arm has halted; therefore. the size of the record has no effect or bearing on the action of the tripping mechanism, which only operates at the end of the record. Having thus described my invention. what I claim is l. A stop' attachment for disk phonographs having a rotatable disk shaft, starting lever and pivoted tone arm. of a segment lever, means carried by the tone arm for actuating said lever, an intermediate gear, a
frictionally supported pinion carried by the gear and meshing with the segmentlever, means for imparting an intermittent move. ment to the gear from the disk shaft, means carried by the segment lever for i iterruptmg such movement, a locking lever, a trip rod connected therewith, a trip lever for the rod, and means carriedby the segmentlever for actuating the trip 'rod and releasing the locking lever from its engagement with the starting lever.
