Description

R. McKEN NA. Improvement in Cotton-Sins.
Patented July 9,1872.
T Cotton-Grins,
'with the seed-board K removed,
\ UNITED STATES ATENT ROBERT MCKENNA, OF WHITES STATION, TENNESSEE.
IMPROVEMENT IN COTTON-GEMS.
SPECIFICATION.
I, ROBERT MCKENNA, of Whites Station, in the county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have invented certain Improvements in of which the following is a specification:
Nature and Objects of my Intention.
My invention relates to the employment of a series of flanges on the saw-shaft of a cottongin in such a manner that said flanges shall be useful in propelling the roll in its revolutions; the object being to give a constant and Figure 1 is a front elevation of a cotton-gin, embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of one end side board, It, one end saw, I and one flange, e,and a section of the saw-cylinder b. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of one end side board, h, one end saw, 1 and one flange, e, and transverse sections of the saw-cylinder b and the seed-board K. Fig. 5 is a front elevation of two of the ribs f f, showing two of the slots 9 g.
General Description. a is the frame of the cotton-gin; b is the ated in the usual manner. which constitute my invention.
saw-cylinder; e is the brush-cylinder; d is the breast; all of which, with the exception of the addition of a series of flanges on the sawcylinder, are constructed, located, and opere e are the flanges,
They are fastened to the saw-cylinder b in the same manner as the saws I I; Said flanges resemble the saws I I, except that they are less in diameter, and have no teeth, one of said flanges being located in each space between two saws throughout the length of the series of saws on the sawcylinder 12. A slot, g, is made in each of theribs ffof the breast d, of sufficient width and length to admit a section of one of said flanges e e to enter a suflicient distance to enable part of the periphery of said flange to come in contact with the surface of the roll in the roll-box i, thereby causing sufficient friction to propel the roll in its revolution.
Claim.
I claim as my improvement and desire to secure by Letters Patent The employment of the flanges e e for the purpose set forth, when the same are arranged as specified.
