Trap-Doors, specitication.
This invention relates to trap doors tted to thev spark-arresting screens of locomotive smoke boxes. and its object is to provide a novel and improved support and fastening for such a. door, whereby the same is easily and quickly applied, securely held in place, and readily removed. l
The object stated is attained bymeans of a combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed, and in order that the same may be better understood. reference-is had to t-he accompanying drawimg` forming a part of this specification.
ln the drawing, Figure 1 is a vertical section showing the application of the invention; Fig, 2 is a front elevation; Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical section on the line 3-3 of il` 2; Fig. e is an enlarged vertical Section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is aff ond View of a. latch.
Referring' specifically to the drawing, 10 denotes the smoke lox of a locomotive into the exhausr` nozzle 11 extends as usual` The smoke box contains a spark-aria-- tin5 screen 12 supported-in any approved manner' and having an opening which is fitted with a removable trap door.v In this opening is mounted a door frame composed ot angle bars l2 which are set with one of. llwir tlanlrfes ll outstanding from the opening. The door is composed of a frame covered with a. nettinfr 15the frame being composed of top and lottom bars 16 and 17, and sido bars 18, these bars heiner angle irons. The netting is bolted or otherwise fastened as shown at 19 to one ot' theilanges of the anule irons, and the latter are so positioned as to leave one ol their flanges outstanding.

-A latch is provided for holding the door closed, said latch comprising the `following parts:
To the outstanding flange ot the bottom cross bar i7 of the door is fastened an outstanding bracket arm 22 which is oti'set downwardly 'from said flange to bring its bottom tlush with the outstanding flange 14 of the door frame bottom bar. To this offset portion of the bracket arm. on the under side thereof. pivoted, by a bolt or rivet 23. a latch bar Q4 oi' such length that one end mav be swung to come beneath the aforesaid flange 14, the other end of the latch bar being upturned as shown at 25 to form a hand-hold. This end of the latch bar is adapted to locked to the bracket arm by a pin or other suitable device 26 when the latch bar is in holding position. The end ot' the latchbar eng-airing the flange liis beveled at its sides to obtain a tightening etl'ect.
To remove the door. the pin 'QG is removed and the latch bar 24 is swung clear of the bottom flange 14 of the door frame, which releases the door, so that it may now be lifted bodily to clear the guard bar 21. after which it is dropped down to clear the top guard bnr 20, which completes the operation. The bottom `guard bar 21 is in tivo spaced sections to provide a recess 2'? to accommodate the latch bar. As the door seats at an angle to the center line of the smoke box and the boiler, it is of itself' prevented from vfalling out of the door 'traine by the top and bdttom guard bars. The top lguard bar not only acts as a stop tor the door, but also prevents cinders from cloggingr the channel in which the top oi the door seats, Which would prevent the easy removal of the door. The manner in which the door is set in the traine makes a tight joint, and the door can be easily removed and replaced. The structure is also strong simple and relatively inexpensive.
