To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE J. MARTIN, a citizenof the United States, and resident of Eau Claire, in the county of Eau Claire and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tree-Supports; and I do hereby declare that the following thereof.

My invention relates to new and useful improvements in supports, and more particularly to holders for Christmas trees.-

One of the objects of the invention is to provide a simply constructed and efiicient holder of this character which maybe inexpensively manufactured in view of the fact that the machine-work has been reduced to a minimum. In other words the device is constructed almost entirely of cast or pressed metal parts.

A further object of the invention is to provide means in connection with a water flight container for holding a tree orthe e centrally therein.

A still further object is to provide a water tight container of improved design with readily detachable supporting legs.

With these and other objects, and the obvious advanta es which may be derived therefrom in view, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter more particularly described and claimed and shown in the drawing wherein:

Referring more particularly to the drawing it will be noted that the invention con sists essential] ofa vertically elongated, preferably c lindrical, water tight container 1 an supporting means therefor. lhe top of the container is open and is provided with an outwardly extending radial flange 2 through which and the wall of the container is formed a number of screwthreaded holes for the reception of the shanks of adjusting and clamping screws 3.

Said ribs being relatively thin will bite into the lower end of the trunk of'a tree or the like T when the same is forcibly projected into the container 1. The lower end of said tree is thus centered within the container and is held in vertical position by the adjusting and clamping screws 3 which are threaded into the container until the inner ends of their shanks engage said tree trunk.

Four diametrically opposed legs v6 are preferably used for holding the container in upright position, said legs being formed of strips of metal and are extended downwardly and outwardly from an annular collar 7 ,the inner ends of said legs being offsetas at 8 and secured in any desired manner to said collar.

The outer lower ends of each pair of diametrically opposed legs 6 are connected b a base stri 9. As shown in Fig. 1- eac correspondlng pair of legs and their connecting base strip are preferably formed from a single strip of sheet metal. and base portions 9 are formed, the tightenin of said nut 11 will tend to force the co lar 7 upwardly and tightly engage the same with the shoulder formed by the radial flange 2. The collar therefore does not need to. be secured to the container and if necessary said container may be revolved within said collar after the legs 6 have been secured to the floor or the like. This permits a Christmas tree to be readily positioned so that its most perfect side will be exposed.

Attention is also directed to the fact that the container 1 including the flange 2, the ribs 5 and the stud 10 may be cast, while the supporting means therefor is constructed of stamped sheet metal. In other words the only necessary machine-work is the drilling and tapping of theholes for the screws 3 and the threading'of the shank 10. v

I claim:

1 A stand of the class described comprising a container open at its upper end, a peripheral flange formed on the container adjacent its upper end whereby to provide a shoulder, a collar surrounding said container and'engaging the'shoulder; a ph1-' rality of pairs of resilient laterally and outwardly extending legs having their inner ends secured to said collar; a resilient base strip connecting each corresponding pairof legs, and means for connecting the bottom of the container With the intermediate portion of the base stripsto force the collar against said shoulder;

A. stand of the class described comprising a container open at its upper end, a col- I strip connecting each corresponding pair of legs, said base strips being crossed and having alined openings formed at their intersection, and a stud extending from the bottom of the container to be disposed in the alined openings of the crossed base strips.
