Description

B. M. MATHIAS.
ROD CLAMP.
APPLICATION FILED 1AN.28, 1918.

' Fig]! I [nvenfor Berf'or) M. Mathias y Qfiorncy UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IBERTON M. MATHIAS, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
non-cmlur.
I Application filed January 28, 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BERTON M. MATHIAs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rod- Clamps, of which the following is a specification.
One object of my invention is to provide a rod clamp for clamping one or more rods in which the clamp will comprise a single clamping member joined with means for setting up stress in the clamp.
Another object of my invention is to pro- I vide, in a rod clamp, a body member and a clamping member flexibly joined together.
With these and incidental objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction and combination of parts, the essential elements of which are hereinafter described with reference to the drawing which accompanies and forms a part of this specification.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation of the preferred construction of my rod clamp. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same. Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 33, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of an alternate construction of my clamp. Fig. 5 is an end view of the same, and Fig. 6 is a section taken on the line 6-6, Fig. 4.
In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the clamp body 1 has a pair of bosses 2 and 3 carried thereby, and a portion of the body extends, as at 4, around the rod or rods to be clamped, and has extending therefrom,
longitudinally of the rod or rods to be clamped, two clamping tongues 5 and 6 united with the extension 4 by restricted throats 7 and 8 respectively.
A pair of U bolts 9 and 10, with cooperating nuts 11 and 12, complete the clamp.
It is evident that when the U-bolts are drawn up, with a pair of rods 13 and 14 positioned in the clamp, the tongues 5 and 6 will be drawn snugly against the rod 14, the material bending slightly at the throats 7 and 8.
In the construction shown in Fig. 4, instead of the extension 4 which encircles the rod or rods, as shown in Fig. 1, a pair of encircling forks 15 and 16 extend from the body portion 1 to the tongues 5' and 6.
In this style the action is the same, but

grip of the end 17 of the body 1, so that strains set up in the clamp by a tendency of the joint of the rods to bend under stress, is taken by a direct tensile strain in the clamping body 1 and the fork 16.
While I have described my invention and illustrated it by two particular designs, I do not wish it understood that I limit myself to these constructions, as it is evident that the application of the invention may be varied in many ways within the scope of the following claims.
Claims:
1. In a rod clamp the combination of a body member, a gripping tongue united with said body member by a narrowed throat, and means for drawing together said body member and said gripping tongue.
2. In a rod clamp the combination of a body member adapted to partially encircle a rod to be clamped, a gripping tongue adapted to partially encircle a rod to be clamped, a narrow throat connecting said tongue with said body member, and means .for drawing together said body member and body member, and; individual means for drawing each of said gripping tongues toward said body member.
5. In a rod clamp the combination of a body member, a pair of gripping tongues, a fork connecting each of said gripping tongues with said body member, each of said forks being adapted to allow a rod to be passed between the tines thereof, and in; dividual means for drawing each of said gripping tongues toward said body member.
