IMPRQVEMENT IN METALLIC PACKINGS FOR STATIONARV JOINTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,664, dated July 2, 1872.
"steam-chest with the cover suspended above it, showing my improved packing laid on the top of the chest. Fig. 2 is a perspectiveview of a short section of the packing. Fig. 3 is a transverse section thereof.
The same letters of reference are employed in all the figures in the designation of corresponding parts.
The packing A is made from copper wire, or narrow strips of copper or other soft metal, by
passing it through suitable rolls, which corrugate it on the two principal surfaces and form thereon two or more longitudinal Vshaped ridges, united together at their bases and by thin webs et, as best seen in Fig. 3.
In applying the packing the sharp edges b b and b b come in contact with the metallic surfaces of the joint, and on being compressed between them will closely hug the surfaces and illevery inequality therein, so as to make the joint absolutely steam and water tight.`
