WEATHERPROOF WINDOW-DEAD.

Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Diem, 3, 11911,
Application filed June 8, 1917. Serial No. 173,592.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, AIKEN C. TAYLOR, a citizen of United States, residing'at Richmond, in the county of Henrico, State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Weatherproof "Win dow-Beads; and I do hereby declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact descr1ption of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertainsto make and use the same.
This invention relates to the weather proofing of windows, the object of the invention being to provide an improved construction of weather proofing bead that will serve not only to guide one side of the window sash but will also act to prevent ingress of Weather-between the bead and sash.
A further object of the invention is to provide a specific structure ofbead that will not be rendered inoperative by reason of being frozen up, ram and snow being excluded from betweenthe correlatively movable elements of the'bead.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved structure that will be effective as a weather strip while acting as a parting bead with all of the functions of the latter, at the same time compensating for variation in widths of'sashes within reasoni able limits from any cause whatsoever, thus- 7 preventing rattling in any position whatsohead in front edge elevation.
Fig. 2 is a. section on line 2-2of Fig. 1"
ever of the sash. An additional object of the invention is to provide an improved structure that may be substituted for the ordinary wooden bead and applied to bead grooves of various widths or maybe applied over the ordinary bead. Another object of the'invention is to provide a specific structure that will insure proper resiliency under all working conditions.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a sectional view through the top .portion of a window frame showing the top inside bead in section and-the parting looking downwardly and showing the parting bead and associated parts insection.
.Fig. 3is a deta1l perspective view of a portion of a parting bead.
Fig. t is a detail perspective view of a por tion of an inside top bead.
Fig. 5 .is a detail sectional view showing the positioning of the upper bead over the ordinary wooden bead.
Referring to the drawing, there is shown a Window frame 5 of ordinary construction and having the usual inside top head 6 and side bead 7 against which the inner face of the lower sash 8 of the window slides. There is provided also the usual outside top bead 9 and side head 10 against which slides the outer face of the upper sash 11 ofthe window.
The present invention has to do with the,
parting beads against which slide the outer face .of the lower sash and the inner face of the upper sash of the window. These beads are somewhat similar in form as will be evident from'the following description.
Referring first to the side or parting bead,
it consists of a resilient metal sheet which-is ing members 13 and 14 to' slightlybeyond the plane of the bight portion 12. Fromthere, the members 15 and 16 are turned toward each other so as to overlap and lie'in a common plane slidably upon the bight portion 12. Being of resilient metal as above stated, the members 15 and 16 may be pressed toward each other so asto reduce the spacing of their remote exter or face portlons and when released, will sp'ing apart and resume their normal positions.
As shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, this parting bead is disposed in the usual bead channel 17 of the .window frame, the divergence of the members 15 and 16 with respect to each other being away from the corresponding side of the frame. The head as illustrated is held in position by a fastening screw 18 but it-will of course be understood that a. nail may be employed or any other desired means. en the parting bead is in position as illustrated in Fig. 2 of the draw ings, the most remote portions of the men vention hereinbefore specified.
By reason of the inturned free edge portions of the members 15 and 16 lying in slidable contact with the bight portion at all times, rain, snow and sleet are precluded access to the spaces between the members 14 and 16 and the members 13 and 15 and freezing up of the bead is'th'us prevented.
In the formation of the inside top bead, there is embodied a bight portion 12" with parallel portions 13 and 14 extending therefrom and corresponding to the portions 12, 13 and 14 of the parting bead. There is no rebent portion overlying the member 14' but there is a rebend portion 15 identical with the member 15 described in connection with the parting bead excepting that its free edge portion does not extend inwardly and over the bight portion 12. There is no necessity for such an inwardly extending partasthe weather has never access to the inside top parting bead when the upper sash is in its closed position. 1
In Figure 5 of the drawings there is illustrated the manner of positioning the parting head over the ordinary wooden bead when conditions. mayso dictate.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the various objects hereinbefore expressed are accomplished .while the structure itself is extremely simple and cheap of manufacture and furthermore that it does not rebends as would be the-case if the members 15 and 16 were flat.
What is claimed is:
1. A window bead comprising spaced members and a connecting bight portion, a member being rebent outwardly upon itself divergently to near its free end portion and terminating with its free end portion in slidable contact with the bight portion.
2. The combination with a window frame and a sash disposed therein, of a bead carried by the frame and including mutually connected members of resilient material, disposed with their connected portions toward the frame, said members diverging in a direction away from the face of the frame, one of said members being in contact with the sash and having its free end portion turned away from the sash and in permanent sliding contact ,With a similarly turned portion of the other member.
3. A window bead comprising spaced members and 'a connecting bight portion, said members being rebent outwardly each upon itself divergently to near its free end portion and terminating with its free end portion in slidable contact with the bight portion.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in the presence of twowitnesses.
