A TTORNE Y ALBERT A. BUMBAUGH, 0F WARSAW, INDIANA.
HUSKIN'G-TOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 3, 1918.
Application filed August 14, 1917. Serial No. 186,201.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBnn'r A. BUM- niooii, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of \Varsaw, in the county of Kosciusko and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Husking-Tools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in husking tools of that class ordinarily fastened to the hand and the object thereof is to afford a claw so attached to the hand that its point will readily assume a posit-ion between the thumb and fingers of the A operator when grasping the husks of cars of corn, and afford a free use of the fingers and thumb of'the hand. Another object is to secure the device upon the hand in a manner that will admit of the natural eX- pansion of the hand while under stress w th out being cramped by the device and without the device becoming loosened from the hand when the latter is normally contracted.
The objects of the invention are accomplished by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a hand with the device applied thereto;
Fig. 2 is a detail view showing the front of the claw with a portion of the supporting band;
Fig. 3 is a side view of the claw showing the supporting band in section; and
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the device complete.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views and having reference now to the same:
1 is a claw constructed of a metallic plate, one end of which is pointed as indicated by 2, the other end being formed in a flat loop 3. Through the loo extends a fiat band 4 of non-yielding material, to one end of which is secured a buckle 5, the opposite end of the band being adapted to be connected with the buckle when the device is placed upon the hand. In conncctionwith the band, along one portion thereof, 18 an elastic strip 6, the ends of which are attached permanently to the band while the latter is contracted somewhat. The intention is that when the band is placed upon the hand, that the elastic strip will normally hold the band snugly about the hand and thus prevent its unintentional removal.
The idea of the device is to afford sufficient play of the claw upon the band so that it can accommodate itself to the natural position of the fingers and thumb when grasping a husk, and for this reason the loop 3 is made of a size that will admit of its free movement lengthwise upon the band that extends therethrough. The claw and its loop is made of suliicient breadth as to prevent its turning upon the band and insure the maintenance of its intended position with its point toward the ends of the fingers when the device is placed upon the hand. Also, the claw is formed with a curvature above the loop so as to approximately fit the ball of the thumb and the contour of the fingers when they are positioned as in clutching a husk. The freedom of the claw to slide loosely upon the band admits of its ready accommodation to positions best suited to the movements of the thumb and fingers, and the contracting elastic strip 6 attached to the band affords tension of the latter about the hand so that the band is constantly held in the position thereon to which it is adjusted. Because of the flatness of the band and the elongation and fiatness of the loop fitting thereon, the claw is held constantly against the forefinger of the hand, so that when the thumb is extended, as in grasping a husk, the latter will become held between the claw and the thumb. This tendency of the band to hold the claw against the forefinger is augmented by the elastic strip which tends to contract the band about the hand and hold it flat across the palm of the hand.
What I claim is 1. In a device of the class described, a non-elastic fiat band adapted to extend completely around the hand, an elastic means attached to the band adapted to contract the band around the hand, and a claw having an elongated flat loop through which the band extends loosely. and being adapted to be held thereby constantly against the forefinger of the hand.
2. In a device of the class described, a In testimony whereof I aflix my signaflat band extending completely around the ture, in presence of two'witnesses. hand, and a claw having a fiat loop through ALBERT A BUMBAUGH which the band loosely extends, the said 5 band and the loop of the claw being so Witnesses:
formed as to hold the claw constantly BEss B. RICHARDS, against the forefinger of the hand. 1 M. L. GEHMONY.
