SOUND-SIGNAL MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 26, 1918.
Application filed April 22, 1918. Serial No. 230,005.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK VRANA, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at Danube, county of Renville, and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sound-Signal Machines, of which the following is a specifica tion.
This invention relates to improvements in devices for producing an audible signal of extremely loud tone.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a machine which may be readily transported, consisting of a furnace, boiler,
a steam siren and a magnifying device for the sound produced therefrom.
A further object is to provide means whereby the sound may be directed at various angles, and which is under the ready control of an operator.
These and other like objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view, showing a steam siren made in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof, and
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional view, taken substantially on line 33 of Fig. 2.
The apparatus is comprised of a boiler 10 and furnace 12, integrally formed and of the locomotive type, having a smoke stack 14, and steam dome 15. The furnace is mounted upon heavy wheels 16, while below the rear end of the boiler are other truck wheels 17, connected by a bracket 18 as is usual, all of the foregoing parts being of the ordinary conventional type of construction.
To the rear end of the boiler is attached a laterally extendin bracket 20, in which pivoted on the pin 21, is another bracket 22, having a concave outer surface, and secured by fastenings to a hollow conical element 25, constituting an amplifying horn by which the sound from the steam whistle 26 'is greatly intensified.
This whistle 26 is of the usual type of construction, and engaged by suitable piping 27 with the steam dome 15 of the boiler, a control valve 28, being inserted in the pipe connection, which delivers dry steam direct from the dome to the whistle.
Engaged with the inlet pipe 27 is a flange 30 engaging a sleeve 31, having an outturned annular edge 32, connecting with a telescopic element 33, which is provided at the other end with a similar edge engaging with another telescopic element 34, which engages with the inner end of the elbow 35, to which the small end of the horn is connected so that all the sound produced by the whistle is conveyed outwardly from the horn which acts as a megaphone.
The apparatus is adapted to produce an immense Volume of sound, sutlicient to disconcert and temporarily deafen those in the vicinity to which the horn is directed.
The horn is pivotally supported by an arcuately bent loop 38, pivoted by the pins 39 on opposite sides of the horn, the loop being engaged at its center by a pivoted link 40, attached at its opposite end to the long arm 41 of a bell-crank lever, pivoted at 42 upon a post extending upward from the center at the rear end of the boiler. The short arm 43 of the bell-crank lever is engaged by a link 44 which extends toward the front, and is pivoted to a vertical lever 45, pivoted upon the pin 46 at its lower end on a bracket attached to the furnace, the lever being provided with an upwardly extended, actuating handle 48, by means of which it can be operated.
In operation the boiler having been properly filled with water, and operated so as to cause steam to rise into the dome, the steam under control of the valve 28, is conducted through the pipe 27 to the whistle 26, the horn 25 may be moved through a considerable radius, so as to direct the sound as may be desired. The telescopic elements 31 to 35 inclusive, act in the manner of a gimbal joint permitting motion of the horn in a manner that will be readily understood.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is.
In a device of the character described, the combination with a supply of steam, a Whis tle and an amplifying horn, a pipe connecting said supply of steam to said whistle, a flange on said pipe, a flanged sleeve secured to said flange, an outwardly turned annular edge on said sleeve, a plurality of telescopic elements, the inner of said elements connected to said annular edge, an elbow to which the small end of said horn is connected and adapted to be engaged by the outer of said elements, an arcuately bent permitting in cooperation With said teleloop pivotally connected to opposite sides scopic elements a movement of the horn of the horn, a link attached to the center of through a considerable radius, substantially 1 said loop, a bell crank lever having itslong as described, and for the purpose set forth. arm connected to said link, a rod connected In testimony whereof I have afiixed my tothe short arm of said bell-crank lever, and signature.
an operating lever connected to the rod for FRANK'VBANA'.
