PORTABLE FORT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 26, 1918.
Application filed September 16, 1918. Serial No. 254,218.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LUKASZ Gnznsrivsxr, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Bayonne, county of Hudson, and State of New Jersey, and I, STANLEY JAwons, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bayonne, county of Hudson, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Forts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in weapons used in warfare, and particularly to portable structures carrying guns which may be directed both vertically and laterally.
The principal object of the invention is to provide an armored structure, containing a gun mount which may be rotated on a vertical axis and also upon a horizontal axis, so that the pair of guns on the mount may be turned in any direction.
A further object is to provide means whereby the armored structure may be moved from place to place and operated from the interior, by the gunners who are protected in an efficient manner.
These and other like objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevational view, showing an armored fort made in accordance with the invention, and mounted upon a self propelled truck.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view take on line 2-2 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken through the center of the structure.
Fig. 4 is another horizontal sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 3, and
Fig. 5 is an enlarged fragmentary view, showing the track-way and engaging elements.
In carrying out the invention, use is made of a metallic platform 10, mounted upon a truck having Wheels 11, and 12, respectively at the front and rear, the front wheels being operated in the manner of an automobile and are covered by armor plates 13, power for the truck is derived from the engine indicated by the casing 14.
Secured upon the platform 10, is a rectangular plate 15, having mounted upon it a spur gear 16, circumjacent to which are fixed brackets 18, having raised sides 19, containing pins 20, and journaled on the pins are concave faced rollers 22, the same forming supports receptive of a circular rail or track 23, formed with the bottom wall 24, of the superstructure.
This superstructure is pivoted upon a vertical post 26, arranged concentric of the spurgear 16, which is rigidly engaged with the plate 15 by bolts 27, and mounted upon the inner platform or flooring 24 is a fixed stand or gun mount 28, its upper edges 29 being concaved and suited to receive a cylinder 30 containing transverse openings 31, receptive of the guns 32, the forward or muzzle ends 33, extending outwardly through vertical slots 34, formed in the converging walls 35, of the armored car.
This car has sides 36, and rear walls 37, the same being covered by an armor roofing 38, and fixed in the rear 37 is a door or en trance plate 40, leading to a compartment 41, divided from the main compartments 42, containing the guns and gun mount, by partition 43, containing a door 44, through which the operative may pass.
A bracket 45, extends upward from the flooring 24, into the compartmnet 41, and rotatably engaged therein, is a spindle 46, operated by the crank handle 47, the opposite end of the spindle carrying a bevel gear 48, meshing with a mating gear 49, on the vertical sprindle 50 which extends downward to the flooring 24, and has engaged upon it a pinion 51, meshing with the teeth of the fixed gear 16.
Thus by rotating the handle 47, the entire superstructure may be rotated upon the axis 26, carrying the guns in any direction.
Narrow openings 54 are provided through the side walls of the car admitting light and air to the interior. The cylinder 30 has formed upon its periphery, at one or more points, a plurality of teeth 55 engageable with a pinion 56, mounted on a horizontal shaft 57, having an extending crank 58, so
that by rotating the same, the cylinder may be partially rotated, within the amount 28, raising and lowermg the muzzles of the guns, 111 an obvious manner, the same being permitted due to the length of the slot 34. allowing them to be elevated or depressed in accordance to the requirements.
Fixed upon the upper portion of the cylinder is a bracket 60 carrying a telescope 62,
which extends outward through an -opening 63, formed centrally at the juncture of:
a port-able fort has been disclosed, which is capable of being rotated from the central axis 26, in any given direction, and also that the guns may be elevated, or depressed coincidently to suit requirements, While due to the aid of the telescope.objects invisible to the naked eye. may be seen.
Thus this portable fort may be moved by the truck as desired and affords an efficient protection, for the operators therewithin.
Having thus described our invention what weclaim as new and desire 'tosecure by Letters'Patent, is
Ina portable fort the combination with a movable platform and an armored car rotatably mounted therein on a vertical axis, means for rotating said car, a gun mount extending from the platform of: said car, a.
