To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD WV. REID, a citizen of the United States, residin at- Detroit, county of lVayne, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Caniping-lVa'gons, and declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to camping wagons adapted to be attached to automobiles or the like, and its object is a wagon body having the side boards thereof so arranged as to be placed in the plane of the Wagon bottom to provide a floor in conjunction with which is mounted a' foldable frame work for supporting a tent. Another object is a wagon body having the side members thereof so arranged as to be placed inthe plane of the wagon bottom in conjunction with which is mounted a foldable frame work for supporting a tent, said tent being secured to the foldable frame work and adapted to be folded therewith. An additional object of the invention is a wagon body in conjunction with which is mounted a fold'able frame work for supporting a tent, said tent being secured to the foldable frame work and adapted to be folded therewith, said tent and frame work adapted to be folded over the wagon body, said tent forming a cover for the wagon body and said frame` work when folded. These and other objects and the several novel features of the invention are hereinafter more fully described ig. 3 is a section .of the camping wagon l showing the beds in the open positlon.

Similar characters refer to similar parts throughout the drawing and specification. The device consists of a wagon floor 1 supported by the cross members 2, said 'A cross members 2 being supported on the wheels 3 by the springs 4, the springs 4 being` fastened at lthe upper end thereof to the longitudinal stringere 5. As shown more particularly in Fig. 5, the side boards of the wagon are hinged at 6 and the top boards of the wagon are hinged at 7. These hinges allow the top boards and side boards of the wagon to be unfolded to form a flat floor as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 5 on which a tent structure may be erected. The tent structure consists of the poles 8 on each end of the wagon between the upper ends of which are fastened longitudinal members 8a which hold the canvas structure in place. The polesl 8 are pivoted at the lower ends thereof to the ends of longitudinal stringere 5 and are adapted to be swung thereupon. The oles 8 lare also provided with braces 9 whicli hook over pins mounted on the ends of the floor boards, as is shown more particularly in dotted lines in Fig. 1. When the box is unfolded the braces 9 are adapted to hook over pins in the ends of the top boards of the box'. The upright poles 10 are curved and have pins at each end thereof, the pins in the upper ends thereof adapted .for insertion in corresponding holes in the ridge pole 11, and the pins onl the lower ends thereof adapted for insertion in corresponding holes in the end boards 12. The canvas tent 13 is fastened to-the ridge pole 11, and also to the ridge poles mounted on the upper ends of the `oles 8 and is detachably fastened to the edpges of the top boards 14. The top. boards 14 when used as a Hoor are supported by the sliding arms 24 at each end o the wagon the arms 24 being slidably mounted on bolts 25 on the end boards -12 ofvthe wagonfand secured at the lower ends thereof to the brackets 26 on the top boards 14 of the wagon. Th'etop boards 14 are hinged to the side members 15 of4 the camping wagon which are supported in a plane with the wagon Hoor l by the adjustable legs 23 at each endv thereof, which fold on the side of the wagon box. When the wagon is provided with a single pair of wheels it is necessary to brace each end of the wagon to prevent it from tilting and the legs 28 are provided for thisr purpose pivoted to the longitudinal stringers 5 of the wagon on the thumb bolts 29. The legs 28 are slotted to provide for a slight adjustment necessary when the ground is uneven. The legs 28 when. in use are moved to the position shown in Fig. 6 and the thumb bolt 29 is tightened, thus holding the legs in place. l/Vhen the legs are not in use they may be swung up and slipped through the brackets 30 at which time the thumb bolts 29 may be tightened. The legs 28 are mounted at each end of the longitudinal stiingers 5 of the wagon and thus. hold the wagon securely from tilting When the camping wagon is set up as described, and it is necessary to pack it in order to move to a dierent camping site, the canvas 13 is detached from the edges of the top boards 14 whereupon the braces 9 inaybe disengaged from the pins on the top boards 14 of the wagon box and engaged over the pins ,on the end of the wagon iloor 1, as is shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. lvVith the braces 9 moved as described the frame is still held in the upright position and at this point the top board 14 may be folded against the end boards 12 as is shown in dotted lines in Fig. 5. rlhe uprights 1G may then be removed by lifting the pins thereon out of the corresponding sockets whereupon the wagon box may be folded as is shown more particularly in Fig. 5, the top boards 14 being folded against the end boards 12 on the hinges 7. rThe side boards 15 and the end boards 14 may then be folded as a unit on the hinges 6 at which point they assume the position shown in Fig. 5. The legs 23 and 28 may be folded out of the way and braces 9 as shown in dotted lines of Fig. 1 may be disengaged from the pins in the door 1 and fastened on the pins on the end boards 12 as is shown more particularly in Fig. 2. To hook the braces 9 on the end boards it is necessary to swing the upriffhts 8 to a vertical position, at which point the braces 9 may be hooked on the end boards 12 thus holding the uprights 8 in the vertical position. All that is necessary to do then is to fold the uprights 8 on their hinge points 16, one over the other and the canvas may be laid in folds over the wagon box and frame in the folded position and if desired, a cover may be biittoned over the top of the wagon box as is shown Fig. 2, at which time the wagon is in condition to be attached to an automobile or the like and moved to any place the owner may desire.

To erect the tent the operation is reversed, the uprights 8 are swung to a vertical position on the hinge points 16, the braces 9 being disengaged from the pins in the end boards and engaged over the pins in the door boards at which point the canvas is held suiciently high to clear the box and thus allow the box to be unfolded and the legs 23 and 28 adjusted and the uprights 10 inserted, whereupon the braces 9 may be hooked over the pins in the top boards 14 and the wagon is ready for occupancy.

The camping wagon is provided with beds 17 as shown more particularly in Fig. 3, the beds being hinged about the center thereof at 18 and having ay swinging leg .19 on the forward edge adapted to be folded out of the way and a bearing 2O is provided at the rear side thereof mounted on a bracket 21, which in turn is mounted .on the door board 14. A caster or roller 22 is mounted on the side of the bed on which the bearing 20 is mounted and rests on the side member 15 of the wagon. A. bed is prbvided at each side of the camping wagon and each bed may be folded when more floor space is desired by folding the half of the bed nearest the center of the wagon as is shown in dotted lines at the right of Fig. 3 over the other half of the bed. Thus it can be seen that while the wagon is in the opened position as shown in Figs. 1. 8, 4 and 5, the beds may be ,opened out ilat to be. used as beds or may be folded to be used as seats, and while in the folded position may be turned on the bearings 2O to allow nearly the entire floor space to be utilized. The beds and wagon box fold together 'and for this purpose the beds are first folded as is shown at the right of Fig. 3 at which time the top board 14 may be swung on the hinge point 7. As the top board 14 is swung on the hinge 7. the bracket 21 mounted on the top board 14 forces the folded bed toward the center .of the wagon on the small wheel 22, the bed being shown in this position at the left of Fig. 4. llfhe end board 14 and the side board 15 may then be swung as a unit on the hinge point 6. which allows the bed to rest on the end thereof on the floor 1 of the wagon as is shown more particularly in Fig.` 5, both beds being shown folded in relation to the top and side boards of the wagon which provides a neat appearing inclosed wagon. -When it is necessary to open the wagon the operations may be reversed by swinging the end boards 14 and. 15 out on the hinge point 6 and then setting the end board 14 in a plane with the wagon floor 1, which rolls the bed on the wheel 22 to the position shown at the right of Fig. 3, at which point the bed may be unfolded and used in the regular way, the bed when folded with the mattress and covers thereon Abeing adapted toliold the bed clothing from displacement.

From the foregoing it can be seen that the bed and wagon frame Qnecessarily work together and th'at the tent and uprights therefor may be easily folded over the beds yand wagon frame when folded, which forms a small and neat appearing trailer for an automobile or the like. lThe exterior view of the wagon and with the beds folded therein, is shown in Fig. 2, which also shows the tent and uprights therefor folded over the wagon box and a cover but-toned thereover. Steps may be mounted at the rear end of the wagon as is shown at 27 in-Fig. l, and a stove or cupboard may be mounted at the forward end of the vehicle, .ifdesired.

One of the novel features of this invention exists in the neat arrangement of the parts in relation one vto the other,allowing t-he beds, the wagon box, the tent, and the uprights to be folded to form a small but neat appearing trailer. Another novel feat-ure of this invention is that it may be moved to any desired place and erected without regard to the condition of the ground underneath the wagon, as the tent ioor is always perfectly dr From the foregoing description, it becomes evident that the device is compara-- tlvely. simple, is very compact when folded and very efficient and convenient in operation.

Having thus briefly describedmy invention, its utility7 and mode of operation, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of `the United States'is- 1. In a camping wagon, a wagon bed or bottom, side members pivotallyV secured to each longitudinal side thereof adapt-ed to be secured in anupright position or in a plane therewith to provide a floor, auxiliary side members pivotall attached to the outer longitudinal sides o the said side members and foldable relative thereto, and bed frames pivotally supported on each auxiliary side member adapted to be turned to upright position when the said auxiliary members are folded relative to the side members or to be turned to occupy a horizontal plane when the said auxiliary members are in extended relation.

2. In a lcamping wagon, a wheel supported structure adapted to be folded to provide a box or extended to provide a ioor, foldable bed frames pivotally secured on opposite sides of the structure respectively adapted to be folded to upright posit-ion to form side walls when the structure is extended or turned to horizontal posit-ion for use as a bed, a foldable frame work supported by the structure, and a tent like covering therefor foldable with the frame work, the cover when erected being adapted to be detachlably secured to the structure and to when folded.

In a camping wagon, a wagon bed or bottom, side boards hinged to each longi tudinal side thereof, end members secured to each end of each side boardvat a right angle thereto forming end boards for the wagon bed whenk the side boards are turned to upright position, auxiliary side members hinged to the outer edge of each side board, said end members forming a support foreach end of the auxiliary side members when folded, a frame work at each side of the wagon bed pivotally secured to the end thereof, the frames having foldable end members forming uprights and across member extending longitudinally of the `wagon l y bottom,side boards hinged to each longitudinal side thereof, end members Secured to each end of each side board at a right angle thereto forming end boards for the Wagon bed When the side boards are turnedI to upright position', auxiliary side members hinged t0 the outer edge of each side board, said end members providing a support for each end of the auxiliary members when folded, a foldable bed frame pivotally mounted at one edge to each of said auxiliery members and adapted to be folded and turned to upright position when said side member is in extended relation or to be unfolded to lie parallel therewith, casters for the bed frame supported thereon near the point of folding the bed frame adapted to be folded with the main and auxiliary side members9 and a tent like structure adapted to be erected over the parts when extended.

8. ln a camping Wagon, a Wagon bed or bottom, side members hinged to each longitudinal side thereof, auxiliary side members hinged to the outer edge of the primary side members and foldable therewith to provide a. box in conjunction with the Wagon bottom, foldable bed frames pivotally secured to said auxiliary side members to position in the interior of the box formed by the folded side members, a foldable freine work pivotally mounted on the migon bed und foldable independently of the side members, and n tent like coveringf for said foldable frame Work whereby the tent structure may be erected independently of the position of the side members und adapted to be folded over the side members to torni n @over for tlie saune `when folded.
