To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HARRY S. Wmms, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and 1 State of New York, have invented certain which has integral means for securing its.

new and useful Improvements in Egg-Carriers, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to barriers of the type used in transporting eggs and other fragile objects, by express or parcel post, and its primary object resides in the provision of a case of very simple construction case, without the use of extraneous fastening devices.

The invention includes for use in connection with a case thus constructed, a very simple locking appliance which fastens the folded parts together so that the case can be opened only by a manual adjustment of the appliance.

An embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 represents a plan view of my improved carrler in a partially opened condition,

Referrin to the drawings by numerical reference 0 aracters which in the several views designate corresponding parts, the carrier is composed of three

members

2, 3 and 4 which whenfolded, cooperate to hold a number of eggs, bottles or other fragile articles, inunovably in separated relation to each other and the exterior parts of the carrier.

The inner member 2 comprises a single sheet of paste-board the end portions of which are folded along equidista'ntly spaced crease-lines to form a plurality of parallel ridges 5 of inverted V-shaped section.

The middle portion of the member provides a base 6 upon which the folded .end

portions are supported and which determines the area of the carrier.

The ridges 5 which are held against inward displacement by the abutment of the ends of t e sheet in the center ofthe basal middle portion of the same, have in their sloping sides, oblong openings 7 placed op- ,posite each other to provide pockets for the reception of the eggs or other articles to be transported.

The eggs are placed an upright position between the ridges with their side portions within the corresponding openings at opposite sides of the same as indicated by the broken line 8 in Fig. 4, and bottles or other fragile articles may be placed in any desired position either between. or within the ridges, according to their shape and size, as

' indicated by the broken line 9 in the same figure.

The middle member of the carrier has, furthermore, in the apexes of its ridges, centrally disposed, narrow transverse grooves 10 which are alined to receive the end portions of the outer member of the carrier as will hereinafter be more fully described.

The second member of the carrier consists of a strip of paste-board which in width corresponds with the height of the ridges on the inner member and which is bent along parallel transversely crease-lines to 'form, with its ends engaging each other, .an inclosure for the ridged portions of the inner member.

The outer member of the carrier comprises a sheet of pasteboard' which is likewise folded about parallel transverse bendin lines to provide a basal section 12 which 1n. size corresponds with the base of the inner member, two side-sections 13 which in height correspond with the ridges of the inner member, two top sections 14 which conjointly provide a cover for the inner member, corresponding in size with the basal portion of the same and two end-sec- 1 ment the ridges of the inner -member are tions 25 which are adapted for insertion in the grooves 10 of the ridges of the inner section.

The second member is disposed with relation to the first-described member to cover the sides and ends of the series of ridges thereof, and the outer member covers the basal portion of the inner member and the ends and top of the series of ridges of the same, while its end portions are placed together and conjointly inserted into the grooves 10 of the ridgesas hereinbefore explained.

The end sections of the outer member are incised at their outer edges to provide two alternate series of tongues of difierent lengths and shapes.

The tongues 15 comprised in one of the series are made of uniform width to fit within the grooves of the ridges .and they are sufficiently long to engage the base portion 6 of the inner member, within the ridges.

The tongues 16 of the other series which alternate with those-of the first-described series, are shorter and pointed to fit within the crotches between the ridges 5.

' It will be observed that by this arrangerigidly held against both longitudinal and lateral displacement and that at the same time the end sections of the outer member are held in frictional contact with the inner member and thereby hold the three members of the carrier against separation.

A case thus constructed can be handled and transported with little danger of accidental openings of the members, of which it is composed, but to positively prevent an occurrence of this kind the invention includes a simple locking device which securely fastens the parts in their relative folded positions.

The locking device consists of a key 17 preferably formed of wire and composed of a stem 18 which at its opposite ends is provided with transverse bits 19. Y

The basal portion 6 of the inner member has, centrally, a slot 20 adapted to admit one of the bits of the key while the other bit of the same engages the outer surface of the top of the carrier composed of the cover sections of the outer member. 4

After the key has been inserted into the space between the end sections of the outer member of the case and its lower bit has passed through the slot 20 in the basal section of the inner member, it is turned through an arc of approximately ninety degrees about the axis of its stem, whereby its bits are placed transversely to the slot" and the line of division of the cover portions of the outer member and the parts are thus held against relative displacement.

It will be readily seen that the members of the carrier relatively positioned and secured as shown and described provide a strong pressure-resisting and non-collapsible case every part of which is held rigidly in its proper position and so that eggs or other articles placed within the case in the manner hereinbefore described and illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawings, will be firmly held thereby.

The member 3 of the carrier may, especially in cases of smaller dimensions, be omitted if so desired, the openings in the ridges may be made of different form as for example, the form shown in Fig. 5 in which the corresponding openings in opposite sides of the ridges are connected, and other modifications in the construction and arrangement of the members of the carrier may be resorted to within the spirit of my invention as defined in the following claims.

I claim:

1. A carrier of the character described, comprising an inner member having a series of parallel ridges, an outer member in closing said series, and a removable key cooperative with said members for locking the outer member in its said position relative to the inner member.

2. A carrier of the character described comprising an inner member. having a series of parallel, transversely grooved ridges, an outer member folded to cover the bottom, ends and top of said series with its endportions in the grooves of the ridges, and a key removably inserted between said endportions, in engagement with the top of the outer member and the bottom of the inner member for locking said outer member in its said position with relation to the inner member.

3. A carrier of the character described comprising an inner member composed of a series of parallel transversely grooved ridges and an apertured base supporting the same, an outer member inclosing the 110' inner member, with its ends within the grooves of the ridges, and a key extending between the ends of the outer member and through'an aperture in the base of the inner member, and having transverse bits at its I ends to engage said base and the outer surface of the outer member.

4. In a carrier of the character described, a structure composed of a strip divided by two parallel, transverse folding-lines, into outer member, and an outer member composed of a strip foldedaround the inner member and having its end portions extending together through the transverse grooves of the ridges of the inner member, to the surface upon which said ridges are supported, said end-portions having a series of tongues fitting within the crotches between the ridges of the inner member to prevent lateral deformation thereof.
