HAROLD L. HAYNES, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, AssIGNon To HAYNES MFG. wORKs, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
TIME-SWITCH.
Application led August 19, 1915.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HAROLD L. HAYNES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county Of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Time-Switches, of which the following is a full, clear, Concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to time switches, and more specifically to time switches controlled by clock train mechanism.
Among the objects of my invention are to provide an improved release and brake mechanism for time switches; to provide improved means whereby'the switch may be actuated manually when desired, and to provide improved mechanism for setting the switch;
Further objects will appear from the detailed description to follow and from the appended claims.
In the drawings, in which I have shown one embodiment of my invention- Figure l is a front elevation of the time switch embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 i's a section on the line 2--2 of Fig. 1;
`Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a detail of the fan regulator and brake wheel;
Fig. 5 is a detail of the ratchet pawl mechanism for the switch;
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of one of the adjustable indicators; and
Fig.'7 isa somewhat diagrammatic view of the lower part of the switch, and two lighting circuits controlled thereby.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, I have shown my invention in connection with a switch 10 which may be an' ordinary double pole four pointl switch, or any type' suitable for controlling the circuit which it is desired to control, power mechanism 11 for actuating the switch, release and stop mechanism 12- for controlling the power mechanism l1, clock mechanism 13 for controlling the release and stop mechanism 12, and lighting circuits 14 and 15 controlled by the switch 10. p
The switch 10 comprises the usual stationary and movable contacts which are inclosed in a casing 16, a stem 17 connected Specification of Letters Patent.

with the movable contacts for actuating them, a stem extension 18 screwed onto the stem 17, and a switch button 19 screwed onto the stem extension 13. In the switch shown the cont-acts are arranged so that the switch has three positions, in one of which positions both of the circuits 14 and 15 are disconnected, in another of which only one of them is connected and in another of which both are connected. The power or driving mechanism 11 comprises a spiral spring 2O one end of which is secured to a pin 21, a shaft A22 to which the other end of the spring is secured and which is rotatably mounted between the supporting plates 23 and 24, a ratchet wheel 25 secured on the shaft 22, a pawl 26 cooperating with the ratchet wheel 25, a spur gear 27 rotatably mounted on the shaft 22 and on which the pawl 26 is pivotally mounted, a pinion 28 meshing with the gear 27, a shaft 29 on which the pinion 28 is secured rotatably mounted in the lplates 23 and 24, a gear 30 meshing with the pinion 2S, a spring pressed pawl 31 pivotally mounted on the gear 30, and a ratchet wheel 32 secured on the stem extension 1S. The shaft 22 is provided with a squared extension 33 for engagement with a suitable key for winding up the spring' 20. The release and stop mechanism 12 comprises a plurality of pins 34 secured on the gear 27, a lug 35 movable into and out of the path of these pins 34, an arm 36 to which the lug 35 is secured, an arm 37 pivoted at 38 to the supporting plate 23 to which arm the arm 36 is pivotally secured at 39, a brake shoe 40 pivotally mounted On the arm 37 at 41, a brake wheel 42 with which the brake shoe 40 cooperates, a shaft 43 on which the brake wheel 42 is secured rotatably mounted in the plates 23 and 24, a pinion 44 secured on the shaft 43, a gear 45 meshing with the pinion 44, a shaft 46 on which the gear 45 is secured rotatably mounted in the plates 23 and 24, a pinion 47 secured on the shaft 46, and a gear 48 meshing with the pinion 47 and secured on the shaft 29. A spring 49 vis provided, the tendency Ofwhich is to move the brake shoe 40 out of engagement with the brake wheel 42. One end of this spring is fastened in a notch 50 in the arm 36 and the other end is secured to the plate 23 as shown at 51. The arm 36 is bent outwardly, as shown at 52, to extend through an opening 53 in the plate 23 and terminates in a cam portion 54 racing when it is released.
The clock mechanism 13 comprises indicating and switch controlling mechanism" 58 for controlling the release and stop mechanism 12, driving mechanism 59 for the controlling mechanism 58, escapement mecha nism 60 which may be of any ordinary type for regulating the movement of the driving mechanism 59, and setting mechanism 61 for properly positioning the dial. The controlling mechanism 58 comprises a dial 62 which is rotatably mounted on the hub 63 of a gear 64, a plurality of combined cam and indicator members 65, the position of which with respect to the dial determines the time of operation of the switch, and a pointer 66 for coperation with the figures on the face of the dial to aid in setting the dial. The dial 62 is adjustably held in position on the hub 63 by means of a spring washer 67 and a nut 68 which engages a threaded portion 69 of the hub 63. The pointer 66 is pivoted at 70 to the plate 23 and is adjustably held in position by means of a screw 71 which extends through a slot 72 into the plate 23. `This pointer 66 is made adjustable so that in case the switchy does not operate precisely at the time indicated the pointer can be adjusted to make the necessary correction.
The driving mechanism 59 comprises the gear 64, a gear member 73 having a gear portion 74 meshing with the gear 64, and a gear portion 75, a stud 76 secured in the plate 77, a pinion 78 meshing with the gear portion 75, a shaft 79 rotatably mounted in the plates 77 and 79L to which the pinion 78 is secured, a gear 80 having a frictional driving connection with the shaft 7 9, a pinion 81 secured to the hub of the gear 80, a gear 82 meshing with the pinion 81, shaft 83 on which the gear 82 is secured, a pinion 84 secured on the shaft 83, and a spring actuated gear 85 meshing with the pinion 84. The shaft on which the gear 85 is secured is provided with a squared end 85a for engagement with a suitable key for winding up the spring.
The members 65 each comprise an annular portion 86 surrounding the hub portion 63, a portion 87 which is bent over the edge of the dial 62 to form a pointer for cooperation with the figures on the face of the dial, and a lug 88 for engagement with the cam portion 54 'of the arm 36.
The setting mechanism 61 comprises a thumb wheel 89 secured on the end of the shaft 79, the pinion 78 previously referred to, also secured on the shaft 79, and the gear member 73 and gear 74 previously referred to. The dial 62 is provided with figures corresponding to the hours of the day and night, as indicated at 90; the hub of the gear 80 has a frictional driving engagement. with the shaft 79 as indicated at 91 whereby the dial 62 will ordinarily be driven from the pinion 81 through this frictional engagement by means of the shaft 7 9, pinion 78, gear member 73 and gear 74, but which frictional engagement will also permit the shaft 79 to be rotated within the hub of the gear 80 by means of the thumb wheel 89 to permit the setting of the dial 62. Spacing members 92 are provided to hold the plates 77 and 7 9a in their proper relative positions. The plates 77 and 79a are held together and to the plate 23 by means of screws 93. Clips 94 are provided for securing the mechanism within the casing 95.
Theuse and operation of my improved mechanism is as follows. The two circuits 14 and 15 may be the circuits for illuminating two different display windows, and it may be desired that the lights in one of these windows should be turned off before the lights in the other. Assuming that it is desired that the lights in both windows should be turned on at a certain time, as six ocloclr, and that it is desired that the lights in one window be turned ofi' at ten oclocl; and in the other at eleven oclock, the members 65 are adjusted so that their pointers will indicate, respectively, six, ten and eleven in the evening, and the dial 62 is adjusted so that the pointer 66 indicates the correct time of day on the dial. The dial 62 is driven by the clock train until the lug 88 of the pointer 65 which is set at six ocloclr engages the cam portion 54 of the arm 36 to force it to the left, as shown in Fig. 3. This will move the lug 35 from in front of one of the pins 34 and permit the spring 49 to draw the arm 36 down to move the brake shoe 40 out of engagement with the brake wheel 42 to permit the driving mechanism 11 to operate the switch 10 to move it to a position in which both of the circuits 14 and 15 are connected to cause both windows to be illuminated. The movement of the switch will continue until one of the pins 34 on the gear 2-7 comes into Contact with the lug 35 which has been' drawn over into the path of this pin by means of the spring 49. The movement of the pin 34 will raise the arm 36 to cause the brake shoe 40 to again engage the brake wheel 42 to bring the driving mechanism 11 to a stop. The spacing of the pins 34 and the gear ratio of the driving mechanism 11 are such that the switch 10 will be moved from one position to the succeeding position at each releasing movement of the arm 36. When the lug 88 on the pointer which is set at ten oclock engages the cam portion 54 it will cause the operation previously described to be repeated to move the switch 10 from a position in which both of the circuits 14 and 15 are connected to illuminate both windows to a position in which one-of the circuits will be disconnected. When the lug 88 on the pointer which is set at eleven oclock releases the arm 36 it will cause the lights in both windows to be turned off.
If it is desired to operate the switch 10 manually independently of the time controlling mechanism, which might be the case if it got dark early, the switch can be operated by means of the switch button 19. This operation by means of the switch button 19 will simply cause the tooth of the ratchet 32 which is engaged by the pawl 31 to move away from the pawl 31, but not, however, sufficiently far to allow the pawl 31 to drop in behind the succeeding tooth on the ratchet 32, (see Fig. After the switch has been thus manually Operated the releasing movement of the arm 36 which takes place later will not cause the switch 10 to operate yas the pawl 31 will simply ride along the ratchet wheel 82 until it catches up with the tooth which has been moved a way from it. It will cause a slight movement of the ratchet wheel, but not suflicient to cause the operation of the switch.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a device of the class described, a switch, power means for actuating said switch, brake means for said power means, said brake means including an arm mounted on a xed pivot, a second arm mounted on a pivot fixed with respect to said first arm, means whereby said power means acts on said second arm to cause the brake to be thrown on, and means including clock controlled mechanism acting on said second arm for causing the brake to be thrown off.
