Be it known that I, JOSEPH B. FISCHER, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Extensible Ballot-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to ballot boxes for use in municipal and like elections, and has for its objects to provide a simple and etlicient structural formation and association of parts, whereby the capacity of the ballot box can be increased in a ready and practical manner to receive and hold an excess above the normal of the ballots cast in a particular election, and for a normal amount of such ballots, wherein the same have greater bulk due to the number of candidates or subjects to be voted on at such particular election. The construction providing against unauthorized access to the interior of the ballot box and contents thereof, and in addition possessing the feature of capability of being telescoped together compactly for storage, transportation, and the like, all as will hereinafter more fully appear.

parts in section 4 designates I the lower section, and 5 designates the upper section of the present ballot box, formed to slide or telescope one within the other, and preferably having the rectangular form shown. 9 designates an operating shaft journaled horizontally in the upper end of the upper box section 5, and provided with a pair of crank arms 10 and with a non-circular end 11 adapted to receive an operating key for manual operation by a person having possession of said key, when it is desired to increase the capacity of the ballot box, or other like manipulations of the box sections 4 and 5.

12 designates two pairs of locking bolts, mounted in two opposite walls of the upper box section 5 and near the lower and open end of the same, as shown.

13 designates a spring interposed between a pa'r of bolts 12 aforesaid, with a yielding tendency to force said bolts outwardly and into holding engagement with vertical series of locking recesses 14 formed in the inner walls of the lower box section 4, to hold and lock the two box sections 4, 5, at the desired adjustment with relation to each other.

15 designates a cam plate pivoted in central relation to a pair of bolts 12 aforesaid, and provided with cam slots 16 adapted for operative engagement with lateral pins 17 on the bolts 12 as shown, the arrangement is such that with a rocking movement of the cam plate'l5 in one direction, a retraction of the two bolts 12 from their engagement in recesses 14 aforesaid will be effected, while a rocking movement of the cam plate 15 in the other direction, will permit said bolts 12 to be projected by their spring 13 outwardly into such locking engagement.

18 designates a connecting link extending from a crank arm l0 of the operating shaft 9 aforesaid, to a cam plate 15 and adapted to transmit to said cam plate the turning or rocking movement of the said operating shaft.

The aforesaid mechanisms will be preferably embedded in the respective side walls of the upper box section 5, and be protected by interior plates 19 to prevent interference on the part of the deposited ballots with the' operation of said mechanisms.
