OSCAR L. CALLAHAN, 0F CARTERVILLE, ILLINOIS.
FUEL-ECONOMIZING DEVICE.
Application filed October 14, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OsoAR L. CALLAHAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Carterville, in the county of Williamson and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fuel-Economizing Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fuel economizing devices for internal combustion engines, the object in view being to provide means applicable to carburetors already in use whereby a material saving in fuel is effected, and whereby also the car will be caused to operate with greater smoothness, will start easier in cold weather, and whereby also the accumulation of carbon will be partially eliminated and correspondingly increased power and efficiency imparted tothe engine.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, herein described, illustrated and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a plan view of a carbureter equipped with the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof also showing a. portion of the intake manifold.
*ig. 3 is a face view of the extension fitting, partly in section.
Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the rotary breaker.
Fig. 5 is a similar view of the needle valve arm.
Fig. 6 is a similar view of the throttle valve arm.
A designates generally a carbureter body, 1 the outlet neck thereof, 2 the throttle valve operating arm, and 3 the stem of the needle valve by means of which the flow of gasolene or other fuel is regulated within the carbureter.
In carrying out this invention, I employ an extension fitting designated generally at B and comprising a casing 4 whlch is somewhat elliptical in shape and which corresponds with the shape of the flange 5 ofthe carbureter body, by which the'carbureter is ordinarily fastened to a similar flange 6 at the receiving end of the intake pipe or mamfold 7.
The casing of the extension fitting is formed with a bore or cylindrical chamber 8 corresponding in size with and also in alinement with the outlet orifice of the carbureter Specification of Letters Eatent.

proper. Within the chamber or bore 8 is a rotary breaker comprising a preferably vertlcal shaft 9 and upper and lower sets of Wings or blades 10 and 11 radiating therefrom, the upper blades extending preferably at right angles to the lower blades and all of the blades having their outer edges curved to conform and operate in close proximity to the wall of the cylindrical chamber 8; The extension fitting, as shown, is held fixedly between the flange of the carburetor and the flange of the intake manifold and is formed with a downwardly extending openmg intersecting the cylindrical chamber 8 and having in connection therewith an auxiliary air inlet valve comprising a valve chamber 12 havin an inlet port-13, a valve 15 Working wit in said chamber and being pressed against the valve seat 16 by means of a spring 17. The valve is provided with.
a stem 18 which extends through the deta'chthrottle valve is an arm 21 and secured to i the stem of the needle valve is another arm 22 formed with a longitudinal slot 23 to receive the clamping bolt or screw 24 of a clip 25 which is thus adjustable longitudinally of the arm on the needle valve stem. A lin 26 has a pivotal connection with the arm of the throttle valve and with said clip on the arm of the needle valve. These arms are so arrangedthat when the throttle valve is moved toward the open position, the needle valve is also turned in a direction to effect a further opening of the needle valve to admit a larger proportion of liquid fuel. The cli on the arm of theneedle valve is made a'd]ustable toward and away from the stem of the needle valve in order to provide for in the operation of the engine, due to the fact that the air and fuel are mixed in the proper proportions at diflerent engine speeds and that the mixture is thoroughly churned and broken up or atomized before entering the intake manifold of the engine. Further enconomy is brought about by the use of the auxillary automatic air intake valveused in conjunction with the casing of the extension fitting in which the rotary breaker operates. The parts comprised in the present invention may be readily applied to carbureters now in use, being applicable to the carbureter without necessitatlng any changes or alterations therein.
Changes in the form, proportion and minor details of "COIIStiIICtIOIi may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
I claim An extension fitting insertible between connecting flanges of a carbureter and intake pi e, said fitting being formed with a cylindrical chamberadapted to register with the outlet orifice of the carbureter, and a rotary winged breaker journaled in said chamber and embodying a rotary shaft extending diametrically of said chamber, said fitting being formed with an air inlet openin discharging through theperipheral wall 0 said chamber and arranged to direct air against the wings of said rotary breaker for imparting motion to the latter.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
