This invention relates to lasting machines of the hed type, an example of which is shown in prior Letters Patent of the United States. No. 1,018,477, granted on. my application Feb. 27. 1912. i
One feature of the invention consists in improved wiper operating mechanism. In the lasting machine to which the present invention is shown as applied for the purpose ot illustration the last is carried on a support and toe embracing wipers are movable upwardly relatively to the last in wiping contact with the upper that covers the side faces ot' the last for the purpose ot conformsmoothly to the contour of the last. 'When the wipers have reached the plane of the shoe bottom they are closed and advanced to lay the marginal portion of the upper into position to be fastened to the innersole. Many modern lasts ditler in shape on the two side faces ot the toe`r the inner side being inclined inwardly toward the sole face and the outer side being reversely inclined. Consequently, if the wipers are closed around the toe at the usual distance of a quarter to a halt inch below the sole and are then upraised to wipe upwardly. the receding inner side face of the last allows the wipers to lose eliertive wiping;r engagement with the upper on that side of the shoe. This leaves the upper loose and permits wrinkles to form. while the outward inclination of the. opposite side ot" the last causes the wipers to pinch there and sometimes damage the upper as they rise. Another ditl'ieulty encountered iu lasting shoes on such lasts is that when the wipers are closed over the in nersole the right distance on the outer side of the toe they do not far enough on the inner side ot the toe. This has important disadvantages in operating upon McKay shoes and upon welt shoes. In making McKay shoes it results Vin locating the lasting tacks so close to the edge of wipe the upper over A the innersolc on the inner side of the toe that they are in the way ofthe awl and needle ofthe sole sewinmachine. In making welt shoes the-failure of the wipers to reach over the inner-sole the proper distance on the-inner side of the toe leaves the upper in improper relation to the lip ot' the innersole, causing detective work ,in the Welting operation. This feature of the invention comprises the combination of lasting means with la'st holding means between which there is capacity Y for relative bodily movement transversely of the last. In the illustrated machine embodying this feature of the invention-the shoe is jacked in fixed position and the end lastin means comprises toe embracing wipers an a toe embracing' band which are mounted for bodily movement transversely` of the machine and relatively to the last duringthe upward wiping operation of the lasting means. y
Another feature 0f the invention consists in means for effecting automatically a relative bodily movement of end lasting means and the last transversely of the machine during an pward wiping operation. This is shown as embodied in uidinlc` means for the lastingrlmeans arranged to cause the lasting -ineans to rise in a path inclined 'to the vertical. Means is providedfor effecting adjustment by which the path can be varied and its inclination reversed for right and left lasts.
A further' feature of this invention consists in improved end band mechanism. Flexible end embracing; bands located below the wipers are employed for supplementing the operation of the vvipe'rs in conforming the upper to the contour ot the side faces ot the last and holding the upper while the wipers are closed to lay the upper into lasted position and are then backed away to permit the upper to be fastened. This feature ot the invention comprises improved band mechanism by which the hand is caused to fit differently shaped lasts and to clamp the upper tightly to a last particularly along. the rear portions of .the sides of the toe. The head of the stud is locked under a flange ofthe socket when the plate 15 is returned to a normal position. This connection between the stud 17 and its socket is in the nature of a bayonet joint. From the plate .l5 rise projections to which are pivotally connected at 20 the tipping head 22 which is adjusted and' maintained in adjusted position about said pivot 20 by a screw and hand crank 25,to adapt the toe lasting mechanism to the inclinationof the forepa'rt of the last bottom. "The tipping head 22 is formed in its upper face as a hal sleeve upon whichfits a cap plate 24 havingr a 00mplelnental formation to present a long bearingl extending lengthwise of the shoe. ln thus bearing'is mounted the cylindrical stein of the Loc 'wiper carrying plate 30. The double-ended treadle Hprovidcs means for lifting thc toe head whereby the wipers, which will have been caused to embrace the toe portion ot' the last below the last bottom, may bc caused to wipe u i and mold the upper to the side faces of tlie toe portion of the last. After the wipers reach the plane of the shoe bottom they are further advanced and closed to lay the upper materials inwardly over the innersole upon the last'bottom. The feneral organization of the machine thus discussed is or may be substantially the same as is fully shown and described in said prior Patent No. 1,018.477. and need not be here further explained.
After the wipers have been advanced over the last bottom` precision of shape of the shoe at the toe calls for the application of heavy compression in order to put the upper materialsl into condition for presenting a suitably compact and smooth surface upon which to lay and attach the welt or the outsole. Upper compressingr movement of the wipers may be produced by foot pressure upon the right 'hand end of the treadle 8, but for the 'best results it is dcsirable to employ a substantially greater stock compressing force than it is practical to apply by means of such a treadle, and to meet these conditions the novel level' neehanism shown in Fig. 1 has been devised to supplement the treadle S. This mechanism comprises a long hand lever 40 constituting one arm of a rock-shaft ,42 which is separate from the treadle shaft and is journaled in a bracket rigidly secured to the frame' of the machine. The rock-shaft. has a relatively short arm pivotally (mnnectcd at -ll to a link or swinfring bar 45 the upper portion of which caries a normally free pawl which is adapted to be engaged with ratchet -teeth 46 formed on the left hand edge of upper the pawl will be engaged with the ratchetby lever arm 40 of the rock-shaft 42 in the most advantageous position for the operator to use his strength.

The toe band is removably supported on a bracket 96 which is formed to present a shelf upon which the middle portion of the lower edge of the .band rests as shown in' F ig. 4. The band is confined in place by the engagement with the bracket 96 of a horizontal stud 98 l projecting from a. plate 97 secured to theband, and by the engagement of a vertical sp-rinr pin 99 with a lower arm of thel late 97. ifhe'band chain 72 is fastened in t e middle to the bracket 96 and carries on its ends depending plates 102 having forwardly opening'slots. These slots receive headed studs 100 located on the outer sides of the band. This supporting means permits free longitudinal withdrawal of the band after the pin 99 has been pulled down.
-T he bracket 96 and therefore the toe band is preferably supported for adj ustinent lengthwise of the machine and relati\'ely to the wipers by a rod -104 connected to the bracket as shown in Fig, 4 and extending longitudinally to the leftvhand end of the machine, Fig. l, where it is provided with a hand wheel 100. The rod has a screwthreaded connection with a collar. Fig. 4. which has a limited ,amount of endwise play in the lower portion of the toe wiper carrying plate 30. By means of this threaded connection the toe band can be advanced or retracted relatively to the wipers. The rod 104 is encircled by a spring which is maintained under compression, as shown in Fig. l, between said collar and the plate 30 and therefore permits the rod 104 and its collar, the bracket 96. and the toe band to have a limited amount of forward and backward movement with relation to plate 30. This play allows the toe band 'to move forwardly against the end of the toe of the shoe in re sponseto the forward pull of the slide bars 75 of the toe band closing mechanism and relieves any unnecessary strain on the bracket 0r chain 72 which might otherwise be produced by such forward pull. The adjusting screw 86, and connections 84. 82.- 74 to theband ends, provides means by which to adjust the tension on the band ends to compensate for the adjustment of'bracketl 96 made by the screw iod'lO-l.
Tdhe chain 72 which is the ,supporting member affording strength and stability to in Figs. 4 and of thin links or plates arranged in vertical series as in the link belt type of lconstruction. ln accordance with a valuable feature of this invention there is provided an inwardly and upwardly inclined'rigid supporting o n backing face for the upper edge portion of the band lining. Such a movement of the toe wipers is desirable and customary, after they have heen closed. in order that they' shall torce the overwiped upper firmlyl against the lip o1 a welt shoe innersole or smoothly back over the toe of a Mciiay shoe innersole. In the construction `shown the toe rest is moved hackwardly with the wipers and presses hackwardly upon the tip seam. This action on the tip seam is desirable, to offset the tendency which the wipers have to how or bend forwardly the middle portion of the tip seam h v reason of their pull upon the upper at the end of the toe. It sometimes happens in the use of the machine,
however, that it is necessary to adjust the erly act upon the shoe. 1t the toe rest wero unyieldingly connected to the plate 10 the toe rest would he moved forwardly by Such adjustment of the toe wipers and in doing so would. by its 'trictional engagemeutwith the upper. tend to bow the tip seam. The yielding connection provided by the stem 1154 and spring 120 avoid such action. The stop 1:21 provides tor adjusting the toerest to ditferent distances from the wipers to locate it aty the tip seam for shoes having different lengths of tips.
The inclination of the side faces of the toe, to the vert/ical has been referred to and the automatic bodily movement of the toe. lastingr devices transversely of the shoe to meet this inclination during their upward wi )e has heen explained. Snoh inclination at the sides of the toe is quite generally uniform and in the saine direction, that` is, toward the outer side of the foot, At the heel portion of the shoe there is also an inclination closed and advanred. The end wiper plates 1GO are adjustable relatively to the adjacent plates 162 to adapt them to the inward eurvature of the shoe bottom at the shank. This adjustment is made as in the mac iine of said prior Patent No. 1,188,616 by' endwise movable bars 164 having on their front ends studs vvhieh stand in slots in the plates. The holddown shown in Figs. 1 and 3 is mounted to turn about the axis of a vertical post 179 b v which it is moved downwardly to rlamp the forepart ot' the shoe down upon the toe rest. lit is advantageous to position the foot plate 1S() of the holdlovvn so that it will clamp the innersole elose tothe end olE the toe, but it must be inside, the rhannel lip. ln prartiee operators swing the loot plate. forwardly and depress it simultaneously and they often get it too far y forward and have to release it and back it away. The holddoivn merhanism of the illustratori machine is provided with a limiting stop to arrest the forward movement so that the operator is not required to exercise care in respect to 'the forward position of the foot plate. The stop is indicated at 182, being an adjustable curved plate held upon a stationary rap 183 by a screw 184; passing through a slot in the plate. The swinging head 185 of the holddown has a roperating stop stud 186.

Having explained the nature of this invention and desrribed a preferred construetion embodying the same, I claim as new and desire to sernre by Letters Patent of the United States:-
