To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MICHAEL J. HOGAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Railway-Line Protectors; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in

This invention relates to an improvement in railway line protectors, the object being to provide a safety rail or safety rails parallel to any of the rails of the tracks of a railway line with means for connecting this safety rail or these safety rails with any of the rails of a railway line so as to support the main line in case of washouts or clogged switches, and also to provide means for stopping a car after it leaves the rail and prevent ditching the car, and to provide means for holding the rail or rails of the track true to gage; and the invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claims.
In carrying out my invention, I employ an auxiliary safety rail 7 .which is arranged for switches outside of the main line rail 8 of railway tracks, and if a safety rail is employed at switches the ends of the safety rail project beyond the switch point 9. This auxiliary safety rail rests upon slide plates 10 which in turn are mounted upon the upper face of ties 11. Each slide plate is formed with an integral slide block 12 upon the face of which the switch point 9 may slide, and which forms an abutment 13 for Specification of Letters Patent.

the inner edge of the base 14 of the main line rail 8. Outside the main rail 8 and formed integral with the slide plate is a rail brace lug 15 the inner edge 16 of which is undercut to receive the base 14 of the rail 8, and the outer edge 18 is undercut to receive the inner edge of the base 19 of the safet rail 7. Fitting over the lug 15 is a rail brace 20 which fits against the webrof the rail 8 and which is heldin place by lag screws 21 which extend down through the lug 15, plate 10 and into the tie 11. The outside of the rail 7 is held by an anchor brace 22 which is held in place by lag screws 23 extending through the plate 10 into the tie l1, and which is secured to the Web of the rail by bolts 24:. The inner end of the plate 10 is also secured to the tie 11 bylag screws 25. At intervals between the main line rail 8 and auxiliary safety rail 7, I place separator blocks 26 which are held in place by bolts '27 extending through the webs of the two rails and through the blocks. For some distance adjacent to the switch points it is impossible to spike the inner bases of the main line rails, but by providing the anchor brace fastened to the slide plate with lag screws and to the safety rail with bolts and the separators fastened to both the safety rails and to the track rail and the integral rail brace lug which engages the bases of both the safety rail and the rail of the track and the rail brace fastened to the integral rail brace lug and bearing against the main line rail, a'means is provided so that the rail will not be thrown out of line owing to expansion and contraction due to changes in temperature. Bythus firml connecting the safety rail with the main line rail through the medium of the slide plate and integral lugs, the outer edge is securely held in place at any dangerous sections as at switch points or on the curves and bridges. Difiiculty is often experienced in the case of washouts at sections adjacent to the switch points, and by thus reinforcing the main line rail with the auxiliary safety rail a bridge is formed which will support the main line rail in'case of a washout; Should a car he derailed by a clogged switch point or by any other cause, the wheels of the car will drop into the space between the main line rail and safety rail, the safety rail preventing the car from running into a ditch and the wheels will ride over the separator blocks 26 which will tend" to arrest the movement of the car and stop it before great damage has been done.

A railway line protector comprising a slide plate formed with an integral slide block and an integral rail brace lug, combined with the main line rail which is inserted between the edges of the slide block and rail brace lug, a safety rail bearing on said slide plate and also engaged by said rail brace lug, a rail brace secured to said lug and bearing against the main line rail, an anchor brace secured to the said plate and secured to the safety rail, and separator blocks located at intervals between the two rails and secured to the webs thereof.
3. In a railway line protector, the combination with a main line rail, of an auxiliary safety rail arranged outside of and parallel thereto, a slide plate upon which the said rails rest, said slide plate formed with an integral slide block against which the inner edge of the base of the main line rail has a bearing, said plate also formed 35 with an integral rail brace lug between the two rails, said lug undercut at opposite ends to engage with the bases of both rails, a rail brace secured to said lug and bearing against the main line rail, an anchor brace secured to the plate and bearing against the outside of the auxiliary rail, and separator blocks located between and'secured to the main line rail and auxiliary rail.
4. A railway line protector comprising a 45 slide plate formed with an integral slide block, combined with the main line rail the base of which abuts the outer edge of said slide block, a safety rail bearing on said slide plate, an anchor brace secured to the 50 said plate and to the said safety rail, and separator blocks located at intervals between the two rails and secured to the webs thereof.
