To all whom it on my concern:
Be it known that 'I, LEoPoLoo Counovs,
' Hijo, a citizen of the Republic of Honduras,
residing at Mobile, in the county of Mobile and State of Alabama, have invented new part of the attachment. A further objectof the inventionwis to provide a simple and eficctive construction of fireplace casing and face plate and radiator or drum attachment capable of being readily applied in erative position in any ordinary Iorm of replace and standard make of grate without requiring a particularly special or expensive preparation or reorganization of the grate structure and fireplace to receive the components of the improved attachment. A still further object of the invention is to provide a heat regulating and radiating attachment for ready disposition in a fireplace over an ordinary basket grate that will operate and serve to economize in the use of fuel with a materially increased amount of radiated heat proportionate to the fuel used within a room or compartment into which a radiating or drum portion of the attachment projects.
With these and other objects and advantages in iew, the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the several parts which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.

The numeral 5 indicates the fireplace having the usual top flue 6 leading into a chimney or other exit or outlets At a suitable elevation within the fireplace, a basket grate 7 is mounted and provided with the usual upper front rail 8.
The improved attachment comprises a face or cover plate 9 carrying a rearwardly projecting casing 10 fully open at the bottom, at 11, and having an upper outlet opening 12 formed in an upwardly and forwardly inclined dome or cap 13. The casing 10 is suitably secured to the face or cover plate 9 and the lower edge thereof rests upon and is supported by the rail 8 of the grate 7. In the face or cover plate 9 an enlarged circular opening 14 is formed at a predeten mined and preferred elevation above the rail 8 of the grate 7, and around this opening is an outer flange 15 over which is movably fitted the inner extremity of an inclosed radiator or drum 16 having material pro -jection outwardly from the said face or cover plate. The radiator or drum 16 is preferably of the shape in end elevation and vertical and horizontal section as respectively shown by Figs. 1, 3 and i. and at one side of the center hasuppcr and lower hinge straps 17 which coiiperate with hinge straps 18 secured to the face or cover plate, both sets of straps 17 and 18 having knuckles 19 through-which a pintle rod 20 extends to provide means for readily swingingv the radiator or drum 16 into closed and open position as may be required. At a suitable elevation a horizontal partition or baiile plate 21 is mounted in the casing 10, said partition or bafiie plate having extremities 22 projecting forwardly through the open-- ing 1% at opposite sides of a central arcuate recess 23, as clearly shown by Fig. 4, he extremities 22 providing supporting ledges for a purpose which will be presently explained. The arcuate recess 23 in the partition or baiile plate 21 provides a feed opening over the grate T and whereby fuel may be readily supplied to the grate through the opening 1% The radiator or drum 16 also has a fixed horizontal partition or baiiie plate 24 secured therein and projecting through the rear end thereof far enough to extend over and partially cover the partition or baffle plate 21 and particularly the recess or feed opening 23 in said latter partition. The partition or baiile 24 extends only partially forwardly through the length of the radiator or drum 16 so as to provide an unobstructed flue 25 within the outer end of the said radiator, the outer end of the radiator being preferably curved. The partitions or ba'fiie plates 2% and 21 are so disposed relatively to each other that the rear portion of the partition or bafiie plate 24 will slide over and closely contact with the partition or baiile plate 2-1 when the radiator is closed, and when the radiator is opened the rear portion of the partition or baffle plate 2d easily moves 0d the partition or baffie plate 21 and clears the recess or opening 23 to an extent equal to the degree of opening of the said radiator or drum, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 4. When the. radiator is closed, as shown by Figs. 1 and 4 in full lines, the recess or opening 23 is shut off, and the only medium of communication between the basket grate and the outlet flue 6. is outwardly through the radiator or drum 16 beneath the partition or baffle plate 2 l and then over the end of the latter through the flue 25 at the inner or front end of the radiator or drum and then rearwardly through the radiator or drum over the said partition or bafiie plate 24 and into the upper part of the casing 10 and out through the opening 12 into the said flue 6.
By means of the circulation of the products of combustion through the radiator or drum, the latter becomes heated and materially increases the heat of the room or compartment into which it projects from the fireplace. the lip-draft created by the line 6 causing the products of combustion to regularly move through the drum or to take the course just explained.
Beneath the basket grate Tan ash-pit 26 is provided, the face or cover plate 9 extend ing downwardly over this pit or fully to the hearth 27 of the fireplace. as clearly shown by Fig. 3. The ash-pit is rendered accessible by a lower hinged door 28, and above this door a series of openings 29 are formed in the plate 9, a suitably apertured slide or damper plate 30 coiiperating with the series of openings 29 to regulate the draft or the inflow of the air beneath the grate. It is also obvious that, under certain conditions, when an increased draft may be desired the lower door 28 may be opened to any degree. The improved attachment also includes means for agitating the 'coal and removing the ashes and collected cinders in the grate and consists of a rocking rod 31 held in suitable bearings 32 at the inner side of the plate 9 just above the draft openings 29, as clearly shown by Fig, 2. A handle or oscillator 33 is connected to the rod 31 and movably extends through a slot 34: in the plate 9. Connected tothe rod. are a plurality of rearwardly projecting arms 35 having upturned extremities 36 with T- heads 37, said heads being so positioned as to readily move upwardly and downwardly between the bars of the grate. This agitating attachment may be readily brought into operation through the medium of the handle 33 and moved upwardly so that the T-heads 37 on the upturned extremities 36 of the arms 35 may be brought into engagement with the burning coal within. the grate and relieve the same from ash or other accumulations which will fall into the ash-pit 26 below. Nhen this agitating means is not in use, it will occupy the position as shown in dotted lines by Fig. 3. This agitating means provides for keeping the grate clear The main advantage'of the improved attachment is that it may be readily applied to and within a fireplace and coiiperate with a basket grate to provide an effective heating means. At any time desired the grate may be replenished with fuel or coal by opening the radiator or drum 16 which has a frictional jointure with relation to the flange 15 to provide an air-tight connection. The comparative simplicity of the improved attachment will materially reduce'the cost of manufacture thereof, and moreover, the improved attachment may be readily set up or applied in operative position over a fireplace or grate without requiring any great amount of mechanical knowledge. It will be understood that the proportions and general dimensions ofthe several parts of the improved attachment may be varied to adapt the same for application to fireplace openings of difierent sizes and over grates of large and small capacity.
I claim as my invention:
1. A grate and fire-place attachment of the class specified, comprising a fire-place face plate and a casing toengage in the fire-place, the casing having an open bottom to fit on the grate and a top outlet opening and also provided with an intermediate fixed horizontal bafile plate with a front edge recess to permit fuel to pass therethrough, and a radiator hinged to the face plate to close over a portion of the latter plate and casing and also having a fixed horizontal bafile plate extending partially into and through the length thereof and movable therewith, said baffle plate of the radiator projecting beyond the rear end thereof to closely slide over the baflie plate of the casing and to open and close the recess in the said casing bafie plate.
