UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
,ROBERT WILSON, OF COUNCIL BLUFFS, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN WOOD-SAWING MACHINES.
cil Bluffs, in the county of Pottawattamie and in the State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stove-Wood- Sawing Machines; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification. j
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a machine for sawing wood, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appe'rtains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my entire machine. Fig. 2 is an enlarged interior view of one of the journal-boxes for the balancewheel; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged side view of the device for holding the wood while it is being sawed.
A represents the frame of my machine, having at one end the balance-wheel B, the journals of which pass through boxes 0 0. These journals work on friction-rollers a a in said boxes, which greatly increases the power of the machine when sawing. Upon each of said journals is attached an arm, D, which arms standin opposite directions and are at their outer ends provided with wrist-pins for the attachment of the pitmen GG, connecting with the saws H H. To one of these wrist-pins is attached a crank, E, for operating the machine.
On one side of the frame A is pivoted a lever, I, from which cords b b lead through the frame in the manner shown in Fig. 1 and their other ends attached to rings d d, which run on the set-rods at the top of the saw-frames. By this means the saws are readily raised up from the wood after the same has been sawed through.
The wood is held on the machine by the following means z" From the front end of the frame A project two inclined supports, J, upon which the Wood rests. K is a lever pivoted in the frame, and provided on the back or upper side with, cogs e e, in which a pawl, L, is to catch. 1 ,The under or front side of the lever K is hollowed out or made concave, as shown in Fig. 3, and a spring, f, secured to the same. This spring is to enable the operator to bring the lever down solid on the wood until the pawl takes into the cogs, thereby holding the wood solid while sawing. Each saw H moves in a sash, M, attached to the frame A, which sash guides the saw across the wood.
Although this machine is mainly intended for sawing stove-wood it may be used for other work, if so desired.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the supports J J, lever K with cogs or teeth 0 e 'and 'sprin g f, and the pawl L, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 16th day of April, 1872.
Witnesses: ROBT. WILSON.
