To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER E. CorrrN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, Cuyahoga county, Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buffers, of which the following is a specification, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a plan of a coupler and buffer embodying my improvements, Fig. 2 is a side elevation, Fig. 3 is a front elevation and Fig. 1 is a section partly in elevation. Fig. 5 is a plan of a modified form of my invention and Fig. 6 is a vertical section thereof. I
My invention relates to buffers, particularly of the type used on engines and tenders and consists in providing a coupler and a buffer arranged so as to permit the buffer to swing radially with the coupler, and also as a protection both for the coupler head and coupler operating mechanism.
My invention also consists in the construction and arrangement of parts which I shall hereinafter describe and claim.
Referring to the drawings, A indicates an engine coupler, B the pocket in which the coupler is mounted and C the buffer. The coupler A and buffer C are preferably pivoted for lateral movement to the pocket B by the pin 2. The buer C has at its rear end an arc shaped buling bearing 3 which bears against the corresponding surface 4 0n the coupler pocket. The buffer C extends forwardly of the pin 2 over the top of the coupler head and terminates in a buting face 5, the ends of which are beveled slightly to the rear so as to permit the buffer to angle v more easily with an opposing bulfer and also to permit coupling moreeasily of the coupler A on a curved track with an opposing coupler. Upon the top-of the coupler head and about the hole for the operating mechanism is a .projection 6 which has at its upper portion outwardly extending horizontally disposed lugs 7 which also extend rearwardly therefrom and coperate with the inwardly extending and horizontally disposed lugs 8 on the under side of the buffer, and which prevent the buffer from being tipped upwardly and which also serve t0 guide the buffer laterally and maintain it at all times directly above the coupler.

To prevent the buffer C from being tipped downwardly at its forward end by an opposing buffer and the consequent lifting of the pin 2, the pin is preferably held down by means of a bolt 12 passed through a hole in the lower end of the pin 2. The bolt 12 is inserted through a rectangular aperture 13 in the vertical wall of the extended floor 14 of the coupler pocket, which serves to accommodate the head of the bolt as it is beine applied.
ln Figs. 5 and 6 I have shown a modified ferm of my device, in which the coupler .head A is secured to the pocket B by a pivot pin 2 while the buier C is secured to the pocket at a point to the rear of the pin 2"by the pin 2a. Instead of having an interlock with the coupler head as is shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4:, the butter has an interlock with the pocket casting. The interlock consists in a rearwardly extending arc shaped lug or flange 15 on the upper portion of the coupler pocket which coperates with a correspondingly shaped forwardly directed lug or Bange 16 on the under side of the buffer, for the purpose of holding down the buffer when in engagementrwith an opposing buiier and passing over an uneven track. The web of the buffer has an elongated aperture 17 for the coupler operating mechanism which permits the coupler head to swing radially in either direction without interference from the buffer.
It has been found that when an engine is coupled to a passenger car, there is a liability of having the passenger buffer ride up .over the engine coupler and thereby injure a switchman standing on the buifer beam. rFhere is also a likelihood of the passenger buffer injuring the lock lifting mechanism of the engine coupler. By the use of my invention these difficulties are avoided, since the buffer will always engage the opposing butter and thereby serve as a protection for the switchman and as a guard for the lock lifting mechanism.
The terms and expressions which I have employed are used as terms of description and not of limitation, and I have no inten` tion, in the use of such terms and expressions, oil excluding any mechanical equivalents of the features shown and described, or portions therof, but recognize that various structural modifications are possible Within the scope of the invention claimed.
What I claim is:
