IiLEWELLYN WISE, OF CINCINNATI, OHTOF LAMP.
Improvements in Lamps, of which the fol-' lowing is a specification.
This invention relates" to an improved lamp for vehicles and particularly to an auxiliary automobile lamp:
An object of my invaflition is to produce an improved auxiliary amp adapted to be employed in the illumm tion of insignia and signals of various kinds, such as signals" capable of distmguishmg the vehicles of fire-chiefs, po ice. officials, physicians, and the like, the insignia ofthe physician having been chosen in the disclosure embodying my invention. j
In the drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view of'a lamp embodying my invention.
. Fig. 2 is a view showing a lamp embodying my invention, attached to a vehicle windshield shown in fraginental elevation. Fig, 3 is a front elevationof a molded glass lamp front embodying theinsignia of a physician. Fig. 3 is an edge elevation of the glass shown in Fig. 3.
Fig. 4 is afront elevation of the metal cover 15 and Fige is an edge view thereof. Fig. 5 is a front elevation of the body portion of the lamp, the cover and glass front having been removed to disclose the interior showing the means for illuminating ,1
the lamp.
.Fig. 6 is a sectional view line 6-6 of Fig. ,1.
The lamp en'ibodying myinvention consists of a body portion 6 having the prefer able parabolioformation, the rear of the taken on the lamp being provided with a lug 7 adapted to be mounted upon a finger 8 of a bracket 9 provided for securing the lamp in position on the vehicle. This body portion is also provided with means for mounting the electric bulb 10 which I have disclosed as the preferred form of illumination, the bulb being located asclosely to the focal center of the parabolic reflector as possible. On
the interior of the body a series ofdugs 11 and 12 are formed, the lugs coeperating to form supports against which the glass front 13 disclosed in Fig. 3, may rest. The lugs 11 are preferably provided with serevv threaded openings 14 for the purposfe'of so- A Specification of Letters Patent.

curing the metal cover 15, disclosed inlFig. 3 in position. This cover is provided with apertures 16 adapted to permit the passage of screws therethrough and into the screw threaded apertures 14, the'glass front 13 being provided with notches IYadapt'edto register with the openings 14 and 16 in order to permit of'the passage of screws therethrough. W i
The particular feature of novelty of m T improved'lamp lies in the formation of the glass front. This front cons'istsof a body portion 18 of substantially plain glass, the body. portion being so molded as to have an elevated portion 19 whien'conforms in contour to the shape of the insignia to be in the accompanying drawings l have chosen displayed. The top surface of this elevated portion is preferably crowned to present a a cross ferniation, the front surface of the cross formation being crowned. The sides .of this elevated portion of the glass front are preferably parallel with one" another and are formed at right angles to the surface of the plain portion 18.
Tn order that the glass front may be retained in position on the body portion of the lamp, l preferably make the glass front of such a diameter that it will fit within the inside of the body portion, the lugs 11 and 12 being so located that their flat surfaces lie sufficiently below the front edge of the body portion to permit of the plain portion 18 of the glass front, to lie subs antially flush with the front edge of the body portion. The cover 15 is provided with an opening 20 of the same shape as the insignia to be displayed so that when placing the cover over the glass front, the opening 20 will register with the raised portion 19 so as to permit the raised portion to extend through the opening 20 and allow the cover to engage the plain portion 18 of the front and to contact the front edge of the body. In securing the cover to the body ortion, the notches 17 are brought into register with the apertures 16 and screws are passed through the apertures 16 andinto the screw threaded apertures 14 of the body.
.By this means the lamp is assembled, the
obscured by the cover andthe lens-like elevated portion 19 allowed to project through insignia thereof in any the cover so as to present only its formation to view when the lamp 10 is illuminated. Any suitable meansrmay be provide mounting the lamp in position, chosen the simple clamp disclosed in Figs. 1, and 2, the lamp being shown mounted in a convenient position on the Windshield of the vehicle, in Fig. 2. By providing suitable adjustment meansthe lamp may be changed as to elevation or inclination to disclose the desired direction.
for
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:-
1. A- lamp comprising a body, a glass front having a lens formation conforming in I having shape to an insignia to be displayed, a cover adapted to close the body and to retain the front in position on the body, and a means of illumination located within the body.
2. A lamp comprising a body, a glass front having a lens formation conforming in shape to an insignia to be displayed, a cover having an opening adapted to register with the lens formation, and means for attaching the cover to the body, whereby the front will be retaine in position on the body. l
y In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
' LLEWELLYF WISE.
