PATENT OFFICE.
ELBERT J. WEED, or STAMFORD, oonnncrrcu'r.
IMPROVEMENT IN CART-TONGUE SUPPORTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,344, dated June 25, 1872.
Specificationv describing a new and useful Improvement in Cart-Tongue Supporter, invented by ELBERT J. WEED, of Stamford, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved device for supporting the tongue of the common ox-cart and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side view, showing the tongue of the cart supported by my device. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of Fig. 1 taken on the line 00 m. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of Fig. 1. taken on the line y y.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
B B are the supports, consisting of two bars or rods. These supports are pivoted to the wed ge'shaped block 0, or connected with it by a bolt or rivet pass; ing through the block, which allows them to turn freely. The block 0 is attached to the hanger D (which is rigidly bolted to the under side of the tongue) by a bolt or rivet, so that it can play thereon or turn to the right or left. Arranged in this manner the supports can be inclined so as to brace in either direction, forward, back, or laterally, according to the 1nclination of the cart to move and the surface of the ground.
With these supports it will seldom be found necessary to block the wheels, and the tongue can be supported on sidelin g or uneven ground as well as on level ground with perfect ease.
When not in use the supports are turned up to the under side of the tongue, as seen in dotted lines, where they are held by the iron bail E.
F is a chain, by which the two supports B .13 are connected to prevent their spreading too much.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- A cart-tongue support, consisting of the rods B, tapering block 0, and hanger D, arranged in combination with the tongue, substantially as shown and described.
ELBERT J. WEED.
