Description

A, J. VANHORN. DETENT MECHANISM FOR STUMP PULLERS.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 6, I917.
Patented Oct. 29, 1918.
WITNESSES ATTORNEY nip.
1 AnoLrnus J. virivnonn, or, HENRY RIVER, NORTH CAROLINA.
To all whom it may. concern: r
Be it known that I, ADoLrHUs: J. VAN- HORN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Henry River, in the county of Burke and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in De: tent Mechanism for Stump-Bullers, of which the following is a specification.
.This invention relates to pulling devices and more particularly to a stump puller, the primary Object being to provide a mechanism adapted to wind a cable on a winch for applying sufficient pulling force to pull a stump from the ground.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide a device of this character which will be compact in form and easily manipulated so that it may be conveniently used in thickly growing timber where space is often restricted.
A further object ofthe invention is to provide a stump puller of this character that may be actuated by a reciprocating lever and a plurality of gears which may be thrown into and out of mesh by a lever for permitting the cable to be slackened at any time during the operation.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a stump puller which consists of comparatively few parts and is simple in construction, but durable and well adapted to withstand the rough usage to which devices of this character are ordinarily subjected.
For a full description of the invention and the advantages and merits thereof, reference is to be had to the following description and the accompanying drawings, wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, in which;
Figure 1 is a top plan of the device constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof.
Referring to the drawing, wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, and in which like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the top and bottom frame bars 1 and 2 may be of any desired length and their ends are connected together by the cross rods 3 and 4 which act as spacing bars to hold the top and bottom frame bars in properly spaced apart relation. Mounted in the top and bottom bars is a shaft 5 which carries a winch 6 adapted to receive the windings 7 of a pull cable 8 the free end 2 nnrEiirMEoHAiiIsM Fons'rUMr-rULLEns.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented 0013.29, 1918. Application filed July 6, 1917. Seria1No. 178,937.-
Of which may be .tiedto a stump in any preferred manner for pulling the stump when the winch is actuated.
On the rod 1, I have provideda grooved collar 9 for receiving aloop 10 provided on one end with an anchor cable 11 the opposite end of which may be fixed. to a convenient tree trunk or other fixed object.
Mounted on one end of the winch is a relatively large spur gear 12 adapted to mesh with a pinion 13 carried by an adjacent shaft 14. The ends of this shaft are journaled in the top and bottom frame bars 1 and 2 and one end of the shaft projects beyond the frame bar 1 and has fixed thereto, a disk 15. This disk carries a pair of yokes 16 embracing one end of the operating sweep 17 which may be of any desired length and which may be swung to actuate the shaft 14:. This shaft is freely rotatably mounted in the frame bars 1 and 2 so that longitudinal movement of the shaft will be permitted. whereby the pinion 13 may be moved out of engagement with the gear 12. To accomplish this movement I have provided a lever 18 pivotally mounted on the rod a and having one end engaged between the flanges of a spool 19 fixed to the shaft 14:. It will be obvious that when this lever 18 is shifted, the pinion 13 may be moved into or out of engagement with the gear 12.
To prevent unwinding of the winch by the pull exerted by the stump, I have provided a pawl 20 having its ends in engagement with the teeth of the gear 12, the pawl being pivotally mounted on the rod 4. A
flat spring 21 engages the pawl and normally presses the same into engagement with the gear 12. This spring, may be moved out of engagement with the pawl, however, by pin 22 which engages over the spring and is carried by a pivoted lever 23 on the side of the frame bar 2. When this lever is swung outwardly the spring 21 will be moved out of engagement with the pawl and permit the latter to be released from the gear. The lever 17 may be actuated to turn the pinion 13 which, in turn, will turnthe gear 12 thus imparting rotary motion of the winch for winding the cable.
From the foregoing it will be observed that a very simple and durable stump puller has been provided, the details of which embody the preferred form. I desire it to be understood that slight changes in the minor details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claim hereunto appended.
I claim-- A stump puller comprising a Windlass having mechanism connected thereto to drive the Windlass, a frame supporting the Windlass and mechanism and including parallel superposed frame bars disposed in spaced relation, a pawl pivotally mounted Within the frame to engage the said mechanlsm, a sprmg element engaged with the said pawl to urge the'latter into operative Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Washington, D. G. 7
position, a pivoted lever mounted on the lower side of the said lower frame bar and provided with a right angularly disposed upwardly projecting pin extending beyond the upper side of the said lower frame bar to engage the said spring whereby the latter may be swung outwardly to release the said pawl from the said mechanism when the said lever is pivoted on the frame bar.
In testimony whereof Iaiiix my signature inpresence of two witnesses, l i p S YADOLPHUS J. 'VANHORN.
