To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN W. TUCKER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of South Orange. county of Essex, and State of `New Jersey, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in rlype-Nriting Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
IThis invention relates more particularly to the carriages of typewriting machines.
Une of the main features of the invention is to provide a carriage which is extensible to adapt latens either extensible or of relatively di lerent lengths to be supported by said' carriage in order that work sheets of various lengths may be written upon and which carriage is adapted to travel various normal or abnormal distances corresponding to the degree of extension thereof, thereby permitting the writing to take place throughout substantially the length of the platen Without requiring the paper to be shifted from one part of the platen to another part.
Another object of the invention is to provide simple and eiiirient means whereby the platen mav be made in sections and properly held relatively to each other to increase or decrease the length thereof and which platen is supported at its ends by extensible portions of the platen carriage.
Other objects of the invention are to provide simple and efficient means whereby the carriage may be extended and held in .such extended positions; to provide a shiftable paper apron; to provide an extensible scale adapted to travel with the carriage; and to provide simple means for supporting paper fingers to cooperate with the platen and carriage.
A further `object of the invention is to providea simple and efficient escapement mechanism which is so constructed that the carriage may be Vextended or'collapsed and said escapement mechanism operated to, permit letter space movement of the carriage in either its collapsed or extended condition.
A still further object ofthe invention is to provide a' carriage which is particularly adapted for small portable `typewriting machines, wherein certain parts of the carriage are adapted to be moved from a normal op erative position to a. more com-pact one, and
wherein a long carriage would naturally destroy the compact portability of such a machine.
A still further object 0f the invention is to provide a carriage which is simple in construction and which may be readily iliade and assembled.

l-'hile the invention is intended more particr larly for a writing machine which is compact and portable in order that the carriage when in a collapsed condition will not be of greater length than the ordinary carriage and thereby interfere with the compact and portable features of such machines, it will be understood that the invention is ada ted for use in connection with writing mac lines ot various kinds and constructions.
The bed 1U may be supported in any desired way to adapt the same for a platen or other case shift, or to be movable from a normal operative position to a more compact one, or otherwise, as preferred. On the bed 10 are two track members 11 and 12, one located at the front part of the bed 10 and the other at the rear thereof. A carriage 13 is adapted to travel along the track members 11 and 12 under the tension ot' a suitable motor, as the usual spring drum, which is not shown, as it forms no part of the present invention. The carriage has two relatively movable base members 14 and 15. These members are substantially U-shaped in cross section, and one member, as the member 15, is adapted to fit within the other member 14. The member 14 is offset for the greater part of its horizontally arranged portion 1U, so that said member 14 bears on the outer surface of the member 15 at the corners of said member 15. The vertical walls 17 of the member 1d are also otset` from the vertical walls 18 of the member 15 for a part of their height and at their lower edge bear against outwardly extending flanges 19 of said member 15. An angular substantially L-shaped plate 2() is secured to each vertical wall 17 and has one portion thereof of each plate fitting under the flange 19, serving to provide a guiding surface for the member 15 when the latter is moved relatively to the member 15 for the purpose of extending or lenfrthening the carriage. and 12, serving to hold the carriage proporly to said track members during the travel thereof. 0n the carriage base member 14 at one end thereof is secured an upright or end bracket 25, and on the innerA base member 15 at one end thereof is a similar end piece or bracket 26. These brackets are adapted to form the ends for the carriage alidlare movable toward and from each other, according to whether the carriage is extendedor shortened. A platen 27 is adapted to be rotatably supported in the end brackets 25 and 2G. This platen may be made of a plurality of sections arranged end to end so as to be extended the length desired. One or more of the platen sections may be provided of relatively different lengths, adapted to be held in the carriage end brackets ,25 and 26 when the carriage is in its extended or shortened condition as preferred. As shown, the platen 27 comprises a plurality of sections or parts 28, 29 and 30, when in an extended condition, or of only two sections when shortened and of a normal size, but it will be understood that the number of these sections may vary. Each section of the platen may be of the usual construction, having an impact rubber or other member 31, supported by a tubular or other form member 32. A cylindrical hub member or socket piece 33 is secured to one end of the section 28, and said piece 33 is provided with a central ta.- percd opening into which is adapted to it the tapered en'd 34 of an adjustable screw or element 35. On the outer end of the screw 35 is a knnrled head 3G, by which the screw max,r be adjusted for engagement or disengagement with the hub member 33, and said screw 35 may engage a threaded opening 37 in the plate or bracket 25 of the carriage. The opposite end of the Section or platen member 28 is provided with a female socket piece 38. The socket pieces 33 and 38 form supports for theplatcn form 32, which is held thereto, and the socket piece 38 has a central opening of a more or less extended character which is adapted to receive the stem or shank 39 of a male socket piece 40, forming an end .support for the second platen section. This socket piece 40 may have' a pin or dowel 41, which is adapted to enter an aperture in the socket piece 38, so that the two socket pieces 38 and 4() willnot only have a substantial interlocking connection of such a nature as will hold. the two sections in proper alinemen t, but also through one or more of the dowel pins 41, will cause both members to rotate in unison.
