' an improved form of talking machine cabinet including the provision of a structure built up of a plurality of associated sections or compartments adapted to be assembled into a complete improved talking machine cabinet. Moreover, this invention contemplates the provisi'on of a structure in which the several sections may be prearranged to be associated in the manner indicated, or various forms of sections already known may "be associated in the manner indicated to provide an improved form of completed talking machine cabinet of the character indicated. Further objects of this invention relate to a structure having the further capacity of permitting the removal of these several sections, if desired, to afl'ord access or removal of any of the several parts of the talking machine mechanism, as well as permitting of a convenient method of transporting the several sections and the talking machine parts normally inclosed thereby, which may be readily assembled into the improved form of complete cabinet indicated.
Further objects of this invention relate to the various forms of construction and arrangement and association of elements as will more fully hereinafter appear in the specification and the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a talking machine, in-' cluding a cabinet constructed in accordance with this invention; Fig. 2 a rear elevations arranged in vertical seriesQincludihg sting mechanism (not shown) arranged a main or body portion 10, a base or amplifier portion 11 upon which the body portlon and a bottom compartment '15.
is mounted, and a cover 12 superimposed upon the body portion, these three sections being combined to provide a top compartment 13, an intermediate compartment 14, The body portion 10 of the cabinet is substantially rec= tangular and includes a horizontal top wall 16, a horizontal bottom wall 17, parallel vertical side walls 18 and 19, a vertical front Wall 20, and a vertical rear wall 21, the top and bottom walls 16 and 17 preferably projecting outwardly from each of the vertical walls 18 to 21. The cover 12 includes a flat vertical front end wall 25, a Hat vertical rear end wall 26, and a transversely curved top wall 27. The end walls 25 and 26 are parallel and substantially semi-elliptical. in shape, having straight lower edges which rest upon the upper surface of the top wall 16 of the body portion when the cover is closed, and upper edges which are curved longitudinally to correspond to the curvature of the top wall 27. The upper edges of the end walls 25 and 26 are provided upon their inner surfaces with marginal recesses 28 and 29, in which are secured the end edges of the transversely curved topwall 27, the upper surface of the top well being flush with the uppercurved edges of the end walls 25 and 26, and the top Wall 27 and curved edges 25 and 26 being preferably substantially semielliptical in shape, as illustrated.
The base or amplifier section 11 of the cabinet projects laterally outwardly from each of the vertical walls 18 to 21 of the body portion 10 of the cabinet, and includes a horizontal rectangular bottom wall 30, vertical parallel side walls 31 and 32, a vertical rear wall 33, and a front vertical wall comprising two swingin doors or sound modifiers 34. These vertlcal walls of the base are preferably provided exteriorly along their upper and lower edges with longitudinal moldings 31' to .34 respectively, which are preferably integral with within the main compartment 10. Also within the top compartment 13 is arranged a sound box 37, or other sound reproduclnfi means, arranged to cooperate with a ta'U tl llt record 38 upon the record support 35. the sound box 3'? is mounted upon and coinmunicates with one end of a hollow goose neck 39, the other end of which is connected to the free smaller end of a hollow tapering sound box arm it) which extends in a substantially horizontal direction over the record support 35 and projects freely through an arched recess it) provided therefor in the lower edge of the rear vertical wall 20 of the cover 12. The support 41 is arranged behind the rear wall :26 of the cover of the cabinet and. tor compactness. extends in a recess -ll pro vided therefor in the rear edge of the top wall 1(3 of the body portion and is detachablv connected to the upper end of a hollow substantially vertical bracket 42, which is rigidly secured to the rear vertical wall 21 of the main portion of the cabinet by means of thumb screws 43, which extend through an exterior base plate and into an interior plate 45, thus clamping the two plates upon the opposite sides of the back \'all 21 respectively. The hollow bracket 42 preterablv flares downwardly, constantly incrcas inQ in transverse section, and the lower poo tion of the bracket is curved longitudinally slightly outwardly. and then inwardly through an arc of about 90 and pro ects freely through an aperture 46 formed by a comparatively large recess 46. arranged centrally in the upper edge of the rear vert1-- cal wall 33 of the base of the cabinet and a comparatively small recess 46 arranged centrallv in the rear edge of the bottom wall 17 i ti t' body 10 of the cabinet. The bracket 4:! terminates at its lowenend in a horizontally transversely rectangular socket 47 arranged within the base ll of the cabinet and relatively close to the rear vertical wall 33 thereof. 1
The base or amplifier portion 11 of the cabinet is preferably utilized for entirely inclosing a horizontally arranged forwardly flaring transversely rectangular sound amplifier -18. the smaller end of which is rigidly secured in any suitable manner in the socket l? of the hollow bracket 42, the larger end of the amplifier being arranged to deliver sounds through the outlet formed in the front of the base 11 by the opening of the doors 3 but it is to be understood that the separate amplifier i may be omitted and the au-ipliticr section or portion 11 of the cabinet niav act in amplify the sound deliver d thereto by the hollow bracket 42,
such construction being fully within the aim and scope of my invention.
The doors 31 are constructed and arranged so that, when closed, they will cover the entire space between the bottom wall 17 ot' the main portion 10 of the cabinet and the bottom wall 30 and the vertical side Willis 31 and 32 of the base of the cabinet. The doors are also preferably arranged so that, when. closed, they will overlap and abut against the front end edges of the vertical side walls 31 and 32, and the outer end edges of the doors will then be flush with the outer longitudinal vertical surface of the side walls 31 and 32, and the inner ends of the doors will meet centrally of the front of the cabinet. Each of these plates is provided with a vertically projecting pintle 52, 52 rigid therewith, the two pintles upon each door being in vertical ali'nei'nent with each other. Cooperating respectively with'thc two pinlles 52' on each door are two plates 53, 59 one of which. 53, is set into and is flush with the under surface of the bottom wall 17 of the main portion 10 of the cabinet. and the other of which, 53'. is set. into and is flush with the upper surface of the bottom wall 30 of the base 11. Each of these plates, 53, 53, is held in position by means of screws 54, 54, or other suitable means, and is provided with an aperture 5:), 55 in which the corresponding pintle fits snugl ghut. rotatably. The pintles 52, 52 of each door are preferably arranged between the planes of the inner and outer vertical longitudinal surfaces of the corresponding side walls 31, 32, of the base, and the front ends of these side walls are recessed at their 1 upper and lower corners respectively, as at no. to receive the corresponding projecting eo will be in longitudinal alinemerit with the corresponding side walls 31 or 32, the

Two spring catches 57 are mounted in the upper side of the bottom wall 30 of the base 11 to hold the doors in closed position.
For detaehably securing the base portion of the cabinet to the main portion thereof. bolts till. preferably having circular slotted heads til. pass through washers (3:3. and apertures t3 prov'ded therefor in the bottom wall 31) ot' the base. and are threaded into apertures (i- lin plates 65 and 70. secured to the under surface of the bottom wall 1? ol the main portion of the cabinet, by means of screws 71, or other suitable means, the washers and the heads (ll of the bolts (3U fitting in recesses provided therefor in the under surface of the said bottom wall 30 ot' the base 11. It will also be noted that upon the removal ot the base portion from the body portion the pintles of the doors 34 are thereby released from their bearings and the doors are tlms readily dismounted. Furthermore. if after a talking machine'has been constructed and assembled in accordance with this invention. it should become necessary to repair or replace the amplifier. oany other )tll't of the machine. it is evident that this may be done. conveniently.
Another advantage resulting ttrom the construction embodied in this invention is that by the provision of the separable cover and base and the parts co-acting therewith. it is: possible to convenientl) convert a coin ventional talking machine of the exposed horn t vpe into a machine of the incloscd horn construction.
