My invention has relation to horse hayforks; and consists in the construction and novel arrangement of a swivel-pulley situated at the top of the fork and used in connection with the elevating-rope, the object of the swivel being to allow the fork to be more easily managed. The novelty also consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the trip mechanism, by means of which the fork is opened to deposit its contents, all as hereinafter described.
In the drawing, A represents an upright post, capable of extension by splicing. B is a horizontal beam holding two pulleys, O C. D is avertical extension. of said beam. E E represent the jaws of the fork pivoted together at e. The handle or arm E of jaw E passes through a slot in the arm of the jaw E. F F are toggles pivoted to the upper ends of arms 13] E These toggles are forked at their upper ends and hold an oscillating block, 0 Through this block passes the pivot 0 and also through the stem 0 of a pulleyblock, 6 which is swiveled upon said stem. The pulley-block e holds the pulley (P, which is, by reason of the peculiar arrangement of the block, allowed freedom of movement to adapt itself to all positions of the fork. G is the elevating-rope, which is attached to extension D, passed under pulley e thence over pulley G, and is brought down and under a pulley at H, whence it is carried to the horse.
The arm E is adapted to hold the trip mechanism, and is therefore enlarged, as shown in Fig. 2. The end of the toggle-arm F fits a socket or recess in the upper end of the arm E and is held in place by a transverse bolt, 9, having its end beveled. g is a spring at tached to one side of a slot, 9 and forked at its upper end to enter a groove in the surface of the bolt g. This spring holds the bolt in position, but allows it to retreat when the toggle is pressed against its beveled end. h represents an L-shaped lever pivoted within a recess, h. The long arm passes through a slot in the spring, and thence outside the arm E and has attached to it the trip-cords passing around pulleys i '5 attached to the fork, as shown. The short arm of said lever reaches toward the spring, and has the effect of pressing back the same when the cord i is pulled.
It will be seen that when the spring is pressed back the bolt 9 is thrown out and the toggle released. In consequence of this the fork-jaws separate and allow the load to be deposited at any place desired. When the cord is released the jaws close again, and the toggle-arm F, being placed in its recess, connects automatically with the bolt g. The block of pulley t is hung loosely, so as to adapt itself to the movements of the fork and prevent entanglement of the trip-cord;
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The trip it and latch g, in combination with the hooks E E substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The frame A B and detachable projection D, in combination with the other parts herein specified, constructed substantially as and for the purpose described.
