MANUFACTURE OF WINDINGS FOB ELECTRICAL MACHINES.
Speoiflcatl LersPetent. p t d 1 a, 191g,
Application filed March 11. 1915. Serial No. 13.808.
To all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, GUs'rAv SGHESNGUT, civil engineer, a subject of the King of Hungary, and resident of Budapest, in the Kingdom of Hungary, Austro-Hungarian Em ire, have invented an Improvement 1n the anufacture of Windings for Electrical Machines, of which the following descripin connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representingllike parts.
This invention relates to t e manufacture of windings for electrical machines and will be best understood by reference to the following description, taken in connection with of one specific apparatus for carrying the same into effect embodyin the invention, it being understood that t e invention in its true scope will be more particularly pointed out in the ap ended claims.
11 the drawings,
Figure 1 is a diagrammatic side view of selected for illustion relates;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the apparatus shown in Fig. 1 in one operative position;
Fig. 3 is a planview of the form of apparatus shown in Fig. 1, in another operative position from that shown in Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 shows, at the right a closed slot and at the left a partly closed slot, for the re- 'ception of the windings.
As is'well known, the windings in electrical machines are disposed in slots. These slots are either wholly closed, Fig. 4:, or the slit 8 of the slot 3 for the reception of the wire 1 is so narrow that the wires cannot be introduced into the slot through said slit but must be drawn in through the slot itself, the slot in such case being the so=called partly closed slot. The laying or drawing of the wires into the slot or slots has heretofore, so far as applicant is aware, been effected wholly by hand, and consequently is at best a slow and tiresome operation presenting many disadvantages, the wires, for example, lying upon the ground where they take up considerable space and being bent back and forth during the drawing-in or laying-in operation, whereby the insulation.
is very liable to injury. a
The present invention aims, among other things, to overcome the disadvantages or objections above set forth, the drawing through of the wire, when once its free end has been introduced into or passed through the slot by hand, being efi'ected in accordance with the present invention by suitable apparatus.
In the illustrative form ofapparatus shown for carrying the invention into efiect, take-up means for the wire is provided, said take-up means herein including two drums each of which is mounted for swinging movementabout an axis perpendicular to its axis of rotation and upon which two drums the wire is alternately wound and unwound.
- The provision for swinging each'drum about an axls perpendlcular to its axis of rotation is to facilitate the unwinding of the wire from the drum, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
The electrical machine to receive the windings will preferably .be placed upon a table or other suitable support, said table or support being preferably adjustable vertically and horizontally in guides or ways 0, d, respectively. The free end of the wire .is passed through the slot 3 by hand and is then connnected or secured to the free edge of one of the drums, to the drum j situated at the right in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 for example. The winding surface of the drum will preferably be of sufficient extent to receive all the wire in a single layer. It is understood, of course, that the other end of the wire has previously been secured to a suitable part of the electrical machine. By rotation of the drum f all the wire with the exception of that portion thereof contained in the slot 3 will be wound up on the said drum from its outer edge to its inner edge. During this winding operation the drum f will be in the position at right angles to the position shown in Fig. 2, that is to say in the posi tion in which said drum f is represented as being in Fig. 3. The drum f is now swung about the axis it, into the position shown in Fig. 2, the end of the wire previously secured to the outer edge of the drum 7" is de tached therefrom and passed by hand through another slot of the machine e, from the right side of said machine Fig. 2 to the left side thereof, and the end of the wire is secured to the outer edge of the drum 7. If the latter drum be now rotated the wire will be drawn through the slot and 0d of the drum f until all of the wire has been wound up on the drum 7 with the exception of t t-portion of the wire contained in the to the second, this latter portion being drawn .closely against the end face of the machine and wiped into correct position thereagainst by the operator in the usual way by means of a pattern or other suitable tool.
The end of the wire secured to the outer edge of the drum f is now detached therefrom, passed through another, slot in the machine e and secured to the outer edge of the drum f. The drum f is now swung from the position shown in Fig. 2 about its axis 71) into the position shown in Fig. 3, or it may be swung into this position before passing the Wire through the slot in the machine e. By rotating the drum\ f the wire will be drawn through this latter slot and placed in roper position therein. Before rotating t e drum f to wind the wire thereon, said drum will have been swung about its axis h from the position shown in Fig. 2 into that shown in Fig. 3.
It will thus be seen that by the rotation of first one and then the other drumf, f, the wire will be drawn first in one direction and then in the opposite direction through the slots of the electrical machine, and will be wound alternately first upon one and then upon the other of said two drums, until the winding operation has been completed.
- The drum from which the wire is being unwound does not rotate during the unwinding of the wire therefrom but remains stationary, said drum being in the position occupied by the drum 7 for example in Fig. 3, and it will be noted that the wire is drawn off from the drum in successive coils, axially of the drum, which greatly facilitates the operation.
In accordance with the present invention, controlling means is provided to insure that only one coil of wire shall be drawn off of a drum at a time, said means in the illustrative embodiment of the invention including suitable members, such as levers i mounted for swinging movement on pivots provided at the rear edge of drums f, f. When the wire is being wound upon a drum 7 or 7' these arms or levers z' are swung into the position shown in the case of drum 7 in Figs. 1 and 2 and of drum f in Fig. 3, said arms or levers then extending radially outward from the edge of the drum, but when the wire is being unwound from the drum said arms or levers 2' are swung into a position in which they extend transversely of the winding surface of the drum as shown in the case of drum f at the right inFigs. 1 and 2 and in the case of drum f, at the left in Fig. 3. In this position the arm '11 are preferably held against the winding surface of the drum by yielding means such as a spring (not shown). Said levers or arms 2 may be moved from one position raeaeae to the other by any suitable operating means such as a lever (not shown). a
The drums will preferably be rotated by independent means, such for example as an electric motor connected thereto by a clutch provided with suitable operating mechanism (not shown).
The electrical machine to receive the windings will preferably be so adjusted vertically and horizontally that the slot intended to receive the winding shall be positioned so as to register longitudinally with the path of movement of the wire as the latter is unwound from one drum on to the other one. Any suitable means (not shown) may be provided for securing or locking the drums in their winding or unwinding positlon.
It is to be understood that while the invention is herein shown as embodied in a specific apparatus, the invention is not to be considered as circumscribed or limited to the slots in the machine alternately in opposite directions and to deliver the wire; and
means upon which said apparatus are swingingly mounted, whereby said apparatus can be turned from wire receiving i-nto wire clelivering position, and vice versa.
- 2. Apparatus for effecting the winding in electrical machines including, in combination, a support for the electrical machine to be wound; means vertically to adjust said support; and take-up apparatus located at opposite sides of said support and adapted to take up the wire after the free end thereof is passed through the slots in the machine alternately in opposite directions and to deliver the Wire; and means swingingly to support said take-up apparatus, whereby said apparatus can be moved from wire re-' ceiving into wire delivering position, and vice versa.

5. Apparatus for efiecting the winding in electrical machines including, in combination, a support for the electrical machine to be wound; means vertically to adjust said support; rotatable take up drums for the wire, located at opposite sides of said support; and means upon said drums, movable into and out of operative position, for controlling the unwinding of the wire from said drums.
6. Apparatus for effecting the winding in electrical machines including, in combination, a support for the electrical machine to wire, located at opposite sides of said support; means to support each of said drums for swinging movement about an axis perpendicular to its axis of rotation; and means upon said drums, movable into and out of operative position, for controlling the unwinding of the wire from said drum.
8. Apparatus for efi'ecting the winding in electrical machines including, in combination, a support for the electrical machine to be wound; rotatable wire take-up and delivery drums, located at opposite sides of said support; and means to support each of said drums for swinging movement aboutau axis perpendicular to its axis of rotation, whereby each of said drums may be brought alternately into wire-receiving and wire-delivering position.
