To all whom it 'may concern i Be it known that I, PETER S. LAMB, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at Ottawa, in the county of Carleton and Province ofOntario, Canada, have invented certain new" and useful lImprovements Tampi'ng-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tamping ma-y chines whichare most commonly used. in connection with the opening up and filling of drains. It consists of a frame-work t mounted on two pairs of wheels, and an oscillatory carriage having a tamping means at its outerend which can be swung the width of the drainQ-I provide a changeable foot isoi'th'at` thelmachine can be used in i breaking concrete, hard earth or drilling rock while opening up a drain.
With these andother objects in view, the invention consists inthe construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will l be'herein'after fully described,illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed `out in the claims hereunto appended.

Referring to the drawings like numerals designatelikev parts` in the various drawings. 20 indicates "a pair of steering wheels and 21 indicates a pair-.of drivingwheels. These wheels arevmounted on suitable axles 22 on which is supported a suitable frame-work 23. The frame-work A.23 canbe raised or lowered'by means of the set-nuts 24 so that when [the machine is sitting `on uneven ground one wheelfmay befconsiderably lower or higherthan theother wheels, thus leavingjthelfraine-work,23.in a` level position. end by a cross-bar 25. 26 is a lever having its inner end hingedly connected to the frame-.Work 23 and the outer end extending back beyond said frame-work. A connecting member 27 connects said lever to one end of member 25. 1 It is by this lever 26 that the machine is steered. I provide a notched plate 28'to be securely mounted on one of the cross-bars of the frame-work 23, so that the lever 26 may be swung into any of these notches, thus setting the rear or steering wheels at the desired angle. The cross-bar 25 has a U-shaped member 29 extending downwardly near its center. This U-shaped member is provided to hold a short tongue 30, which has its inner end hingedly connected to one of the cross members of theframework 23. The outer end extends out considerably past the rear end of the frame-work 23 and is provided with any suitable clamping means so that it can be attached to the rear of a wagon for hauling from place to place. When it is desired to use the tongue 30 for steering, the connecting member 27 is released at its outer end from the end of crossbar 25.
The driving wheels 21 are provided with a suitable sprocket wheel 31 on their inner side. Attached to the outer end of the shaft 22 of the drive wheels, vI provide braces 32 which extend back and are attached to an extending end of one of the cross-barsof the frame-work 23. By having these braces 32 the drive wheels 21 will always be kept in parallel alinement with the sides of the main frame 23.
33 indicates the oscillatory frame which his pivotally mounted at 34 to the frame-work of which are provided with suitable gears so as to engage with suitable gears lon the inner side of gear wheels 43 and 44; 46 is a lever attached at one end to the slidable clutch 45 and the other end eXtends to the rear of the frame-work 23. 47 is a cross shaft behind and parallel to the cross-shaft 39. vThis, shaft carries a drive wheel48at one end, a gear wheel 49 adapted to mesh with the gear wheel 41, a larger gear 50 adapted to mesh with gear wheel 42, clutches 51 adapted to slidably engage with either gears 49 or 50. 52 is a lever, one end eX- tending behind the frame-work 23 and the other end being bifurcated-and attached to the clutches 51. 53 is a belt ruiming' from the drive wheel 48 to the drive wheel of the power means. It will be seen that the shaft 47 and the shaft 39 are constantly turning. In the usual rate of tamping or of opening a drain the machine is moving at low speed, that is, the gear 49 is driving the gear 41. If high speed is required operate the handle 52 so as to make the gear 50 turn the gear 42 in the same direction that the gear 41 was turned.
54 `is the main drive shaft journaled in the framework 23 and carrying thereon a sprocket wheel 55, a brake wheel 56 and at its ends sprocket wheels 57. 58 is a shaft j ournaled in the frame-work 23 and carries a beveled gear wheel 59 adapted to mesh with beveled gear wheel 38, and at one end a sprocket wheel 60` in aliuement with sprocket wheel 55. Sprocket chain 61 connects sprocket wheels 55 and 60. Sprocket chains 62 connect sprocket wheels 31 and 57. 63 is a brake connected to a brake band 64 which extends around the brake wheels 56. This brake can be used when the machine is going up or down hill.
Canadian Patent 145,946 granted to Raleigh I-I. Staley, on February 11, 1913, covers a tamping machine which operates the tamper in the manner as shown in the inclosed drawing and thus I do not wish to Y claim anything on the particular means of Y raising and lowering the tamper. I improve the construction as shown in the said patent by having the lever 65 operate both the tamper holding clutches 66 and the drive clutch 67 at the one time, thus eliminating the possible mistake of starting the drivewheel before the tamper holding clutches 66 are released. It has been found in operation that the smooth face of the segment 68 slips on the side ofthe upright tamper and I improve this as shown in Fig. 11. 'Ihe tamper 69 is provided with the toothed member 70 which is countersunk in its side Ywhile the `segment has a corresponding toothed member 71 on its face. The operating of the tamper will now be more accurate and no slipping willoccur. I
Referring vto the foot 72 I provide a foot having a hollow center 73 adapted to receive the spiked tooth .74 which will be used in breaking cement, pavements, earth, or drilling in rock.A When the machine isused in tamping earth in a drain the dummy tooth 75 is used. 7 6' is a set of braces which aid considerably in strengthening the foot.
At therear of the frame-work 23 I provide a hingedly connected step 77, this will be found ofV great convenience, as the operator can stand on this step while the wheels straddle the drain and from this position he has fulllcontrol over' the various levers' which all eXtendvback toward this end. 78 is a tool boX which can be mounted on the framework 23 in any desirable position.
When desirous of' going around a verv short corner it will be found to great 'advantage to draw the pin 79 on the inner side of the turn so that the sprocket wheel 57' which has the pin withdrawn will be free on the shaft 54. By doing this power will be given to the `outside drive wheel and it will turn 'quicker than if power were on both wheels. i
From the foregoing-it is thought that the construction of my invention will be clearly understood, and therefore a more extended explanation has been omitted.
What I claim as new` is 1. A machine of the class described, comprising a vertically slidable tamper, a pivoted carriage, a traction framework on n which said carriage is pivotally mounted, operating means for said tamper, holding clutches, and a drive clutch and means whereby said clutches are operated at one and the same time, thus eliminatin possi-A bility of starting the drive wheel be ore the holding clutches are released. i Y
2. A-machine of the class described, comprising a vertically slidable tamper, a pivoted carriage, a traction framework on which said carriage is pivotally mounted, operating means for said tamper, holding clutches, a drive clutch and means whereby said clutches are operated at one and the same time, thus eliminating possibility of starting the drive wheel ,before the holding clutches are released, said tamper being pro? vided with a countersunk toothed member for coperation with a toothed segment for preventing slipping of the tamper.

In a machine ofthe class described, the' combination of a vertically slidable tamper, operating means, fory said tamper, dogs adapted to hold saidtamper in araised position, a drive wheel adapted to receive transmission for said tamper from said operating means, and a lever adapted to disengage said dogs and engage the driving clutch with said drive wheel simultaneously.
5. In a machine of the character described, the combination of a main frame supported on two pair of wheels, a pivoted carriage mounted between the two front wheels to swing the width of the ditch, a power drive mechanism positioned on one end of said carriage and a vertically slidable tamper with operating,- means therefor positioned at the opposite end of said carriage so as to constitute a counterbalance at the ends of said carriage, tamper holding means, means for simultaneously controlling the same and the tamper operating, means.
6. A machine ofthe character described, the combination of a main frame, a pivoted carriage mounted on said main frame, a tamper and operating means at one end of said carriage, and a power driving mechanism at the other end of said carriage, tamper holding means, a lever for simultaneously actuating the same and controlling the tamper actuating means, a traction mechanism mounted on said carriage, connecting means so as to operate the front pair of said wheels.
7. A machine of the character described comprising` a main frame, a pivoted carriage mounted on said main frame, tamping means at one end of said carriage, tamperactuating means, tamper-holding means, and a lever for simultaneously actuating the same and controlling the tamper-actuating means.
