IMPROVEMENT IN PILED FABRICS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,286, dated J nne 25, 1872.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I,'GEORGE CROMPTON, of Worcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Pile-Fabrics; and I do hereby declare that the following, taken in connection with the drawing which accompanies and forms part of this specification, is a description of my invention sufficient to enable those skilled in the art to practice it.

United States Letters Patent, No. 125,026, have been granted to me for an improved pilecarpet, the invention shown in and covered by said patent consisting in a pile-fabric in which the warp-loops are bound by and interlocked with the weft-threads. Each loop-warp, instead of passing simply under the adjacent upper piles of weft-thread, also extends over the upper and under the under picks, so as to be fastened and interlocked by and with both top and bottom picks, thereby binding the pile or color warp so as to render it impossible to draw it up or ravel it to any extent beyond any one loop or those next adjacent to it.

My present invention relates to the construction or formation of pile-fabrics, in which the loops of pile or color warp are thus secured; and the invention may be considered as an improvement upon such patented invention,or, more properly, as a specific and new disposition or arrangement of the threads or yarns of a pile-fabric embodying the said patented invention.

In the disposition of the threads, as shown in my said patent, there is a pick of weft under the pile-wire, and between the pile and stuffing-warp and above the stuffing, and a pick of weft under the stuffing and over the pile-warp, with sometimes a pick of weft also between the pile-wires above the stuffing-warp and over the pile-warp.

In my present departure from such specific structure or disposition of the threads, I so insert the pick that there shall always be two of weft-picks under the pile, the pile-warp extending to the back of the stuffing, and being there fastened by the back or bottom pick.

The drawing illustrates at A, B, and G the collocation of threads for the successive picks,

and at D a modification, at A, B, and 0, there being two picks under the wire, and no pick between the wires, while at I) there are two picks under the wire and a pick between the wires.

a denotes the worsted warp; b, the stuffingwarp; and c d the two halves of the linenwarp. f denotes the pile-wires; g h i, the weft orshuttle threads. The picks repeat themselves after six picks. At the first pick A, the worsted warp a is up, the stuffing-warp b and half of the linen warp d are down, and half the linen warp c is-at the middle, thus forming a double shed--the top one for insertion of a pile-wire, f, and the bottom for insertion of a pick of weft, 9. At the second pick B the linen warp c and stuffing-warp b are up, and the worsted warp a and the linen warp d are down, making a shed for insertion of the pick of Weft h. At the third pick 0 the linen warp c and the worsted warp a are up, and the warps b and d are down, forming a shed for insertionof a pick of weft, t. The next three sheds are the same as those described, except that the positions of the linen warps are reversed-half of warp d being up and half of warp 0 being down.

In the fabric thus formed two picks of weft are inserted under each pile-wire with no pick of weft between the pile-wires, and the pilewarp extends to and is fastened against the back of the stuffingby the back pick.

In the modification shown at D the pilewarp extends to the back of the stuffing, and is fastened by the back pick, as at A, and there are two picks under each wire, as at A, with an additional pick between the wires.

The improved fabric having two picks of weft under each pile, with the pile-warp fastened by the back pick, substantially as shown and described.
