Be it known that l, ARCHIBALD JONES, a citizen of the United States, residing in Langeloth, county of Washington, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain y new and useful lmprovements in Zinc Retort- Furnaces; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrip- .tion of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in theart to which it apper tains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improved construction of zinc retort furnaces provided with a fire brick construction arranged above and incorporated with the furnace proper and forming a pre-heater or heat recuperator for pre-heating the air used for the combustionv of the fuel in the furnace.

The drawings show the upper portion of one sect-ion of a double furnace structure, the end walls of the furnace being indicated at 1, 1, and the upper rows of retorts, in the combustion chamber, being indicated at 2.
Above the furnace proper is a fire brick construction containing a series of tlues for the products of combustion from the fur nace, and for the air supply to the furnace, these fiues being arranged to form a recuperator for pre-heating the air by means of the outgoing products of combustion. From the combustion chamber the products of combustion pass up the flue 5 into the horizontal Hue et, thence through the vertical connecting flue':a into the upper horizontal Hue- 6 and through the connection 7 to the stack 8. Arranged above the iues 4L and 6 are air flues 10 and 9 communicating with each other by vertical flues 12. The upper air ue is provided with an air inlet 11.
As indicated in Figs. 3 and 4:, the pillars at the front of the furnace aremade up of pillar blocks 13 and 20 which support the arch and the upper lire brick construction, and which also support the shelves 19 upon which the frontends of the retorts 2 rest. The retort-s are indicated in outline in Fig. 4.
It will be noted that the pillar blocks 13 extend out between the buckstaves 3, and that these extensions are hollow. lt will also be noted that the pillar blocks 13 are provided with passages 15 leading from the hollow extensions to the combustion chamber. The skewback 16 supported by the top pillar block, where this type of construction is used, is also made hollow. Arranged thereabove, is the hollow block 17, the open ing in which communicates with the passage in the skewback and, through a passage 18 in the furnace wall, with the lower air flue 10. The arrangement is such that the preheated air from the lower flue 10 enters the passages 18 and passes down through the opening 14 in the hollow pillar blocks and thence through the passages 15 to the combustion chamber. The hollow pillars accordin gly serve to conduct the pre-heated air from the recuperator arranged above the furnace proper to the combustion chamber. lt will be seen that the air flues and the exit flues for the products of combustion are arranged in heat interchanging relation to each other so that the heat of the outgoing products of combustion is transmitted through the flue walls to the incoming air, and the air thus highly pre-heated. The construction is moreover a unitary construction in which the fire brick construction forming the pre-heater is arranged on top of and incorporated with the furnace proper, and in which the flues for the pre-heated gasl from the pre-heater to the combustion chamber' also form a part of the furnace construction. The arrangement of the flue structure forpre-heating the air above the retort containing combustion chamber is also an advantageous arrangement because of the more direct passage of the products of combustion from the furnace to the stack and of the air through the flues and the hollow pillars to the combustion chamber.
It will further be noted that the hollow pillar blocks themselves are provided with vertical passages which form air flues, and that these pillar blocks are also provided with one or more ports leading from the Bti vertical passages to the combustion chamber of the furnace, so that the air can be supplied through the pillar and the hollow pil lar blocks to the furnace chamber.
What I claim is:
l. A zinc retort furnace provided with hollow pillars having ports communicating with the retort-containing combustion chamber and supplying air thereto, said furnace having exit flues for the passage of the outgoing products of combustion, and air-ad mission flues supplying air to the hollow pillars near the upper ends thereof and arranged in heat interchanging relation to the exit flues, whereby the incoming air is preheated by the outgoing products of combustion; substantially as described.
2. A zinc retort furnace provided with hollow pillars having ports communicating with the retort-containing combustion chamber and supplying air thereto, said furnace havingI exit fines for the passage of the outgoing products of combustion, and air-ad mission fiues supplying air to the hollow pillars near the upper ends thereof, said airadmission flues and exit iues being located above the combustion chamber and arranged in heat inter-changing relation to each other, whereby the incoming air is presheated by the out-going products of combustion; substantially as described.
8. The combination in a zinc retort furnace having a furnace wall and coperating buckstaves therefor, of a pillar incorporated in said wall and forming a part thereof and built up of a plurality of pillar blocks, each of said pillar blocks having a vertical passage therethrough and a port leading from said passage and communicating with the retort-containing chamber of the furnace, said pillar blocks being vertically disposed one above the other and so that the vertical passages therethrough are in substantial alinement; substantially as described.
et, A zinc retort furnace provided with hollow pillars built up of a plurality of hollow pillar blocks each of which has a vertical passage therethrough arranged to con'imunicate with similar passages in the other pillar blocks of the same pillar, each of said pillar blocks having a port leading from said vertical passage and communieating with the retort-containing combustion chamber of the furnace, exit fiues for the passage of the outgoing products of combustion "of the furnace arranged above the retort-containing combustion chamber thereof.

and air admission flues arranged in heat interchanging relation with said eXit flues and communicating with the vertical passages in said hollow7 pillars near the upper ends thereof, whereby the incoming air is preheated by the outgoing products of combustion and directed downwardly through the vertical passages in said hollow pillars; substantially as described.
5. rIhe combination in a zinc retort furnace having' a furnace wall and coperating buckstaves therefor, of a pillar incorporated in said wall and forming a part thereof and built up of a plurality of pillar blocks extending outwardly beyond the face of said wall, each vof said pillar blocks having a vertical passage through the portion thereof extending beyond the face of said wall and a port leading from said passage and com-v municating with the retort containing chamber of the furnace, said pillar blocks being vertically disposed one above the otherl and so that the vertical passages therethrough are in substantial alinement; substantially as described.

The combination in a Zinc retort furnace having a furnace wall and coperating buckstaves therefor, of a plurality of spacedapart pillars incorporated in said wall and forming a part thereof, each of said pillars being built up of a plurality of pillar blocks vertically disposed one above the other,
shelves resting upon and supported between corresponding pillar blocks of said pillars, and retorts supported at one end by said shelves; substantially as described.
7. The combination in a zinc retort furnace having a furnace wall and cooperating buckstaves therefor of a pair of spacedapart pillars incorporated in said wall and forming a part thereof, each of said pillars being built up of a plurality of pillar blocks vertically disposed one above the other, each of the pillar bloclrs of one of said pillars having a vertical passage therethrough arranged to communicate with similar passages in the other pillar blocks of the said pillar, each of said last mentioned pillar blocks having a port leading from its vertical passage and communicating with the retortcontaining chamber of the furnace, shelves resting upon and supported between corresponding pillar blocks of said pair of pillars, and retorts supported at one end by said shelves; substantially as described.
