Be it known that I, FRED HAUsnR, a citi` securing a window sash in the window frame j so that it can be swung horizontally and reversed to permit both sides of the window to lie-readily cleaned from the inside of the room, and the object of the invention is to provide such means which will be very cheap and simple in construction as well as effective and convenient in use, and which can be readily attached to the usual slidable window sashes to convert them into swinging reversible sashes.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a front view of a portion of a window frame and an edge portion of a window sash adjacent thereto Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 except that the parts are in a different position; Figs. 4, 5 and 6 are enlarged horizontal sections onv the lines 4 4, 5-5 and 6-6 respectively of Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the spring washer. Referring 'to the drawing, 1 indicates a pulley-stile of an ordinary window frame of which the parting bead has been removed from the groove 2 therein. In said groove 2 of each pulley-stile can slide a metal slider 3 having preferably rounded or tapering ends, a wide-flange 4, and a threaded narrow extension or screw 5. Said screw 5 is screwed through a hole 6 tapped in the upper end of a flat bar 7, which is secured by screws 8 to a side edge of a window sash 9. The screw 5 is additionally screwed into the nut 11 which is contained 1n a recess in the adjacent edge of said sash.

The prongs are driven firmly into the groove 2 of the window frame adjacent to the bottom of the sash until the plate abuts against said frame. Pivoted to said plate, as shown at 16, is the lower end of an arm 17, the upper end of which is pivoted to the bar 7 at a point slightly above its center, and I provide, in connection with said pivoting means, the following frictional means for resisting the rotation of the bar relatively to the arm. The head 18 of the bolt 19 which pivots the arm and bar together is countersunk in the bar. A thin flat washer 2O around the bolt is interposed between the bar and the arm. Around the bolt on the inner side of the bar are placed in succession a thin flat washer 21, then a spring washer 22, then a fiat washer 123, then a spring washer 24, then a fiat washer 26 and then a nut 27, which is screwed on the bolt. Powerful leverage is used to screw the nut on the bolt in order to flatten the spring washers to the required degree and thus furnish the necessary spring pressure to produce the required friction. rllhen the inner end of the bolt is swaged or riveted upon the nut. The parts on the bolt at the inner side of the bar arecontained in a reces128 in the adjacent edge of the window sas i I have found that the above-described frictional devices are suiiicie'nt to prevent the window sash from turning, and therefore from dropping, if its weight be not unusually great. For instance, two such devices, one on each side of the window sash, will with perfect safety, support a window sash weighing fty pounds, and can even be used to support a heavier sash.
29 indicates a window stop formed with a groove 30 on its side next the window, within which is received the inner edge of the bar 7 projecting inwardly from the edge of the sash. The groove and bar eifectually exclude the entrance of rain past the window.
I claim 1. In combination with a window frame, a vertical arm, one end of which is pivotally secured to a vertical side of said frame, a sash, a mediate portion of a side edge of' which has a pivotal connection with the' other end of said arm, an end of said sash having a vertically slidable and pivotcd connection with said frame side, and means located in the sash and comprising a spring and friction surfaces, said means surrounding said pivotal connection and resisting the turning movement of the sash relatively to the arm so as to automatically hold the sash at any angle at which the sash may be placed within the range of operation of the device.
2. In combination with a window frame, a vertical arm, one end of which is pivotally secured to a vertical side of said frame, a sash, a mediate portion of a side edge of which is recessed, a bar secured tosaid side edge and having a hole registering with said recess, a bolt extending through the other end of said arm, throughsaid hole in said bar, and into said recess, a spring washer around said bolt in said recessand a nut in said recess screwed on saidbolt and pressing said spring washer against said bar andy thereby producing friction between said bar and arm and resisting the turning movement of the sash relatively to the arm so as to automatically hold the sash at any angle at which it may be placed within the range of operation of the device.

In combination with a window frame, a vertical arm, one end of which is pivotally secured to a vertical side of said frame, a sash, av mediate portion of a side edge of which is recessed, a bar secured to said side edge and having a hole registering with said recess,a bolt extending through the other end of said arm, through said hole in said bar, and into said recess, a plurality of spring washers and interposed plain washers around said bolt in said recess, and a nut in said recess screwed on said bolt and pressing said spring washers against said bar and thereby producing friction between said bar and arm and resisting the turning movement of the sash relatively to the arm so as to automatically hold the sash at any angle at which it maybe placed within the range of operation of the device.
4. In combination with a Window frame, a vertical arm, one end of which is pivotally secured to a vertical side of said frame, a sash, a mediate portion of a side edge of which is recessed, a bar securedto said side edge and having a hole registering with said recess, a bolt extending through the other end of said arm, through said hole in said bar, and entering said recess, a nut on said bolt, and a spring washer surrounding said bolt and compressed by the screwing of said nut on said bolt, and transmitting its pressure to said bar and arm to create frictional pressure therebetween, and resisting the' turning movement of the sash relatively to the arm so as to automatically hold the sash at 'any angle at which it may be placed within the range of operation of the device.
