- This invention relates to certain. means for securing the lid or cap of a jar or can intended to contain fruits, meats, &c., ordinarily termed preserving cans or ars. sists in a band whose inner surface is concave so as to embrace the edge of the cap or lid and the edge of the jar or can, and whose outer surface is sufficiently groovedor depressed to allow a Wire to fit in it the ends of which can be twisted for tightening the band so as to bring in close contact the cap or cover and the edges of the mouth of the jar or can.
- packing or cement may be used between the band and the edges of the jar to make a perfectly air-tight joint, though in many cases this will not be necessary. Specification describing a certain Improvement in Cans, Fruit-Jars, 850., invented by JOHN K. OHAsE, of the city of Brooklyn, in the State of New York.
This invention relates to certain. means for securing the lid or cap of a jar or can intended to contain fruits, meats, &c., ordinarily termed preserving cans or ars. sists in a band whose inner surface is concave so as to embrace the edge of the cap or lid and the edge of the jar or can, and whose outer surface is sufficiently groovedor depressed to allow a Wire to fit in it the ends of which can be twisted for tightening the band so as to bring in close contact the cap or cover and the edges of the mouth of the jar or can. In some instances packing or cement may be used between the band and the edges of the jar to make a perfectly air-tight joint, though in many cases this will not be necessary. If rub,- ber packing be used, it will be perceived that the joint can be made very tight, as the pack- Theinvention con-' ing will be drawn around the edges as well as pressed down upon them.
Figures 1 and 2 of the drawing showthe means by which it is contemplated to bring the ends of the band together, and tighten the band around the cover and mouth of the jar or can.
These figures show the band a with a depression or groove in its outer surface for a wire, h, Fig. 2 being a view by vertical section of Fig. 1. i
