ATTORNEY @MED STATESATENT OFFICE-j- CLARENCE B. WILTSE AND WIAWLLIAMYJ. SMITH, oFr/roUN'rKIsco, ivEw-Y'onx.
i snowman-ninas.
To all whom t may: concern Beit known that we, CLARENCEJ land l/VrLLIAMy J. SMrrH,..citizens 1otthe United States, residing at Mount Kisco, in
the county of VVestchest-eran'd Stateof New York, have inventedcertain new and useful;V Improvements in Shutter-Hinges, 4of ,whichl the following isa' specification. 1' Y This invention relates tohinges, designed most especially for shutters and like swingtion against closing by currents Vof air.
Y provision ot` means'forstreirgthening and j kso The inventionr providesa hinge which prevents'the casual'unhinging of theshutter orA like part and which 'admits offlockingjthe shutter in open position. y .f y Y A further purpose of thei invention is the bracing the hinge and'which "co'perates with the locking means to'insure-positive vac-v tion thereofand theforniationpta hinge which is durable-andjeiici'ent. "r w l Other objects and 'advantages may vbecome apparent to persons who read the following details "of description' in Vconnection with Vthe accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 -is an 'elevationfofaifragment ofkr a window frame and shutter' connectedby a hinge of well known construction-'and having'Y my attachment' secured'v thereon. v` f F1g2 isa vertical'sectionalvi'ew taken on the line 2--2 of Fig. 1, andFig: 3 is a horispond with similar parts throughout the Several views, the window-frame is designated by the letter A; thej window Kshutter-B; the stationary section of the hinge rC, and the movable section Iof 'thehinge'y D As prei" viously stated, these elements A, B, C," 'and D, are of well known construction, and willl over the cam :16 causes the elements 17 and not be described in detail.
The pintle (not shown) of the hinge is removed and replaced by the special pintle 10 which holds the hinge elements C and plate 11 is apertured at 13 and receives the studs.
Sp'ec''ca'tionfovf Letters Patet`- yIztllied Y npplicationniea November 14,1917-: serial No. 201,990. gv
pintle10,. and a screwf 14 /passesthrough l aperturerm. an upturned ear 15 `and engages l f with thewmdow frame A so as to'coperate with the pintle and extension C of the lower hinge -inember for supporting the plate 11 in horizontal position.`V Theiplate; '11 is provided with an' upwardly curvedy flange.l
The extension D has one end formed-into a bearing through which` Vthe 4lpintle f 10 extends, `while the arm 17 hasfone end curvedv around this bearing, asr shown `at 18;,andfi the reinforcing arm 17 is: secured by ascrew` j n 19' to thevhinge member D.
A l'second rei forcingmember consists! of a horizontal portion 201 and'anfapertu'red vertical portion ,21 which latter is provided* withran opening through whichia screwy 22 extends into the shutter;y B.l TheV horizontal portion 20`isiprovided with an: aperturef23- through whichthefpintlefl() extends;y
- lever-,25 is pivotally -.mounted uponvthetse' A washer 26 -may be V.provided between the camV 27 fand the horizontal ele'` ment 20, but, as in.l the case of the washery 12,- this washer can also beleliminated, and
thecam 27 mayfoperate indirect ContC with the' element 20'so` that when. the cam leverV 25 is swung into its'brokenline posir tion, the hinge z membery D is held against stop for preventing the arms 17 and D from sition, the swinging of the hinge member D 18 to rise as they pass over the cam 16, thereupwardmovement with `relation toythe'plateiv 11,'sothatthe cam or flange .'16 constitutes a yswinging over the cam 16;` Howevenwhen the-lever 25 isin its vertical or full .line pop by `raising the pintle 10 against the tension of a. spring washer 28, which latter may also constitute a nut-locking device, kincopera tionnwith'a washer 29, for preventing accidental turning of a nut 30 which is in screwthreaded engagement with the lower end of the Vpintle 10; itA being understood that the washer 29 is non -rotatably mounted on Y pintle 10. However, my inventionis not limited to this particular form of nut lock.
It will be seen that the device may be tensioned by rotating the nut 30, thereby increasing or diminishing the bearing of the nut against the spring washer 28.
In operating this device, the shutter mayv be opened in the usual way, thereby m0v` frame A 'and shutter kB suilicientlyV to allow the lever 25 to be swung through said gap into the broken line position shownin Fig.
1; thereby blockinv the elements 17 *andl Dl against beingraisedso thatthe cain16 now acts as, a stop for preventing the shutter from being moved into its closed position so long asthe lever 25k remains in-its horizontal position; but whensaidllever is raised,
the shutter may be-iclosed as showniin the oregoing-- l f l Although I have describedthis device in minute detail, itis to be understood ythatmy invention isnnoty limited to this speciicconstruction and arrangement of parts, butmy invention is susceptible of such changes that.4
do not constitute adeparture .from thel inventive idea disclosed iny the i following claims,- y
Vhat I claim as my inventionis: v1. The combinationzwithva pairof hinge members, of a pintle pivotally `connecting said hinge -membersya plate provided withr an iaperturethrough Awhich said pintle eX- tends, said 'plate being interposed f between said hinge-'members andiniixed relation to,
one of thealatter, means onsaid plate for coperation with the elements :ofthe other" hinge member 'for locking said hinge members lagainst relative movement aroundsaid pintle, and means copterative with said pintle or rendering the firstlsaid means effective and ineffective.
2,"The combinationf-With hinge-members I of ordinaryfconstruction, of'a pintle pivotT ally connectingzsaid hinge members,a camy lever pivotally connected to said pintle, an apertured plate provided with a cam and being disposed between said liingemembers andhaving said pintle through its aperture, and'm'eans for-holding said plate in stationary 4relation to one of said hinge members and 'in such relation to the otherofsaid 1 hingey members .that the latter is slidable members, ya plate disposed between the hinge f members and apertured to receive the pintle, a cani on-the plate for co-acting with the 1 relativelymovable hinge member, a second plate beyond the hinge members and having one of' the'fliinge membersedisposed between i it and the plate disposed between the hinge members, anda cam levermounted onl the pintle and co-acting withfsaidsecond 'plate to confine-'the movablel hingef'inember between the two plates.-
4.` In combination, a fixed hinge member,
' a fixed plate, a cam on the fixed plate, a movabley hingef'member, ,al reinforcingA arm secured at one end -to Ythemrovable hinge-meniber and having its Aoppositeendreceiving.` the eye portionfof saidmovablehinge memv ber, a plate-movable with the movable hinge member andfhaving'they latter between itand the fixed plate, a pintlepassing throughthe` hinge members andfboth plates and reinforcing'Y arm, and a camlever-l pivotedto fr ythe pintle antico-acting with ,the movable plate', Iii-testimony whereof we aiiixour signa-U tures in presence of two witnesses.
