Lesa-cos.
To all whom it may concern. Be it known that I, LOREN L WHITNEY, a citizen of the United'States, and resident of Hammond,in the county of Lake and State of Indiana, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Methods of Forging Steel Fulcrums, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to method of forming brake beam'fulcrums with an integral thirdpoint support.
V The object of the invention is to im prove'and simplify the method of forging brake beam 'fulcrums having an integral third point support. Y H i Generally speaking, this object is accomplished by use .of the method of forming a brake beam fulcrum consisting first in pro-- viding a blank having two spaced portions, then inserting another blank between said spaced portions and in contact therewith,
and then upsetting the two blanks to form a seat on'one of the blanksand a third point support on the other of said blanks. The method is illustrated on the accompanying sheet of drawings, in which- Figure l is a plan view of a piece of stock which forms one of the blanks; Fig. 2 is a plan view, and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the blank after one end thereof has been twisted and a portionthereof de-' inserted into the end of the loop of'the Fig. 8 shows a completed fulcrum wherein the first blank is provided with a seat and a third point support is formed from the metal of the second blank and Fig. 9 is an end view of the completed brake beam fulcrum.v i
The various novel features will be ap parent from thefollowing description and drawings and will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
There are various methods of formin brake beam fulcrums. .Mostof such moth I Applicationfiled November 30,1917. Seria1No. 204,572
METHOD or FORGI'NGSTEEL rULonu sods, however, are more or less complicated,
and do not furnish a finished product adapted to meet all of therequirement's for cessful commercial operation. s
In my improved method I makeuse of two blanks 10 and 11; The first one" is of flat metal stock, and the second preferf ably'is in the form of a cylinder. In shap- Specification of L tters Patent. Patented Octal, 1 918.
ingthe first blank,'0ne end 12 first is twisted a given amount and a portion 13 thereof deflected laterally. The, other end of the blank 10 then is treated in the same manner to provide an angularly arranged portion 14 and a deflected portionj1'5a The parallelspaced portions or members 17 the in loop 16 being closed at one end preferably bya'curved wall 18.. The front end of the loop or opening 16 thus formed receives the second blank, which is placed between the side wall portions 17, and also placed in engagement therewith and in engage- I ment with the curved end wall 18 of the loop or opening 16. It will be understood that at the time the second blank 11 is insorted into the first blank, as shown in Fig. 7, the second blank 11 and the cooperating end portion of the first blank, will be at welding heat, or they may be placed together prior to the time that they are heated and then brought to welding heat together.
These blanks are then secured in proper dies and upset to form aseat 19 in the metal formed bv the first orlarge blanklO, and to form a third point support "20 from the metal of the second blank 11, it being understood that the finished product shown in Figs. 8 and 9 is an integral structure. The seat 19 is for the reception of the tension member of a brake beam, and the laterally extending portions 13 and 15 at the other end of the fulcrum are to be By means of this method integral brake beam fulcrumsmay be provided in a very simple manner and at' the same'time meet the various requirements forsuccessful cont, merclal operatlon.
I claim:

in the form of aloop, then inserting another blank Within the loop ofthe first blank, and
then upsetting the two-blanks'to'forman integral strueture with a seat and athir'd 2. The method of forming-abrake'beam fulcrum consisting first in providing a blank in theforin of a loop, then inserting another blank Within the loop of the first blank, and
' {10 :then upsetting the tWo blanks to form an 1ntegralstructure-With a seat in the first blank and a third point supportformed fIOlIlilllG second blank. s
8. The method of forming a brake'beam Q lfulcrum consisting first in. providing a blank in the form of a loop, then inserting another blank Within the loop in contact With the first blank, and then upsetting the two blanks t0 forman integral structure with a seat'in one i Q [blank and a third point support formed from the other blank.
4. The method of forming a brakebeam fulcrum consisting first in providing a blank havingtwospaced members, then inserting another-blank between said members incontact therewith, and then upsetting said blanks to form an integralstrueture in'whioh a seat is formed in one of said blanks and athird point support frointhe other of said blanks.
- 5.--The method of forniing a brake beam fulcrum consisting first in providing a blank having a closed end, then inserting a second blank insaid closed en'd in contaeuwith the first blank, 'and then up's'ettin-g said blank to form an integral structure in Which a seat is formed in one-of said blanks and a third point support from the other of said blanks. 6. The method of forming abra kebeam fulcrum consisting first in providing a blank With an opening therein, then inserting a second blank in said opening in contact :With the first blank, and then upsetting said blanks to form an integral structure in which a seat'is formedinone of said blanksanda third point support from the otherofsaid blanks.
