Application filed January 5, will. Serial .rl'sfblllfltfi.
To all 1117mm it may concern."
Be it known that 1, JAMES M. 'il irsozv, a citizen of the United States, residing Rochester, -51 the county of Monroe and State of N=ew York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements. in Auto Locks, of which the following a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide :1 new and useful improvement in locks for automobiles.
This and other objects of the invention i will be fully illustrated. in the drawings, de
scribed in the specification and pointed out in the claims at the end thereof;
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of the steering wheel and lock.
'Fig. 2 is a. vertical section on the 2X-2X of Fig. 3. g
Fig. 3 is a section-on the line 3X-3X Fig; 2, looking up from below.
Fig. i is a section on the line etXl- LX of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 bar.
' In the accompanying drawings,
line
is" a, side elevation of the locking like referonce numerals indicate like parts.
In the drawings, reference numeral 1 indicates the casing for the steering column. At the top of the casing is provided a collar 2 which is stationary therewith and is clamped thereon. The collar is divided at with a lap joint which permits its expansion for the purpose of getting it in place and contraction for the purpose of iastcning it in place In the outer lap i a. screw hole I is providedqand in the inner lap 5 a slot is provided. Throu 'h these openings the screw 6 is passed w .ioh' engages with the asing 1 .of the steering column by which the collar is-held in place (in the collar is provided-the lug 7 having an opening 8 therein, in which may be received the bolt 30 for the locking device.
Inside of the shell. 1 is contained a series of hollow shafts assho'wn in cross section in Fig. 4:, to-the outer one of which is toned the steering wheel 9, the steering wheel and shaft revolving together. To the second and third hollow shafts are fastened the spark and thrott e controls 10 and 11. (in the inner shaft, which may be stationary, is supported 'thecap 12 which is-independent of and does not turn with the steering wheel or the controlling levers. On the top of the plote 16, mounted to rotate within the sin tionarv ring 17. dial plate l0 provided with a stem 18, which passes through the top of the casing" 15 and has the plate 19 keyed to the bottom thereof. 1
Mounted to slide past the stem 18 between the casing 15 and the plate 19 is the bolt 26, wh'ch bolt is slotted at the right hand end as shown in Fig. 3 to straddle the slcui 18, by which its me e1. out to the right limited.
On the bottom of the plate 19 is carried :1 lug 21 which engages with a corresponding lug on the top oi the tumbler On the bottom of the tumbler 255 is carried another lug which engage with a corresponding lug on the top of the tumbler o. On theboltom the tumbler 2-3 is a similar lug which engages with a corresponding lug on the top Til the t'uiubler bottom oi each tumbler are preferably formed by t staple which through the holes in the tumbler and is left in posit-ion In this way a combination of tumblers is provided all centered on the stem 18, which tumblers are controlled by the dial plate 16, in the manner in which similar tumblers are operated in the ordinary combination lock...
Each of these tumblers is recessed as indicated at '25. On the bolt 20 is provided pawl 26 having a teeth 27 thereon. which can engage with. the recesses provided in the tumblers. A spring 29 is provided for pressing the pawl 25 in one direction so that the teeth 27 thereon will engage in the recesses in the various tumblers when all of these recesses have been brought into a single line as is common practice inthe oporation of combination locks.
After the tumblers 22, 23 and 2i have been properly positioned and the pawl and tooth 2'? have made engagement with can be thrown buck by the rotation of the dial plate 16 in one direction holdihgthe tumblers in engagement therewith fast against further'rotation in that directionl By turning the dial plate in the other direction the bolt'will be thrown forward. and the tumblers will be released for rotation in either direction.
The lugs on the top and the tumblers as above described, the bolt- Ztr liloving transversely of the casing 15 is the bar 30 having a 'll shaped head 31 with a recess therein eapable of receiving the bolt 20. When the bar 30 is in the position shown in Fig. 2 the bolt 20 can be turned forward into engagement therewith and the bar 30 will then be loehed in. position with the combination being thrown OH". The lower end of the bar 30 enga sin the socket 8 in the lug 7 on the collar 2. The bar passes close to the hub of the steering wheel between the spokes oi. the steering Wheel, preventing the rotation of the steering wheel except through a small angle ot' less than 20 degrees, which angle ol rotation is not sutlieient for steering the :ar. It also will interfere with. the mortanent of the levers 10 and ll and prevent the operation oi. the car through them as well.
Vlhen not in use for the purpose of loele ing the car, the bar 30 will he dropped down tln'ough the lug Tout oil plaee with its T- shaped heed resting on top of the lug 7. Vt'hen used to lock the ear, it will be raised up bet veen the spokes ol the steering wheel.
thereof, :1 lug rigidly fastened on the steer-' ing eolnmn below the wheel, a loek mounted above the wheel. a locking bar extending from said lug between the spokes of the wheel to the loel; above the wheel, said bar being fastened in place by said look.
A loeking device for an autmnobile havin; a bolt and a easing, said locking device being mounted above the steering wheel, :1 lug rigidly fastened on the steering post easing below the steering wheel and a bar extending through said lugand through the spokes of the steerim \v ieel into the casing l of the lock, said bar being "fastened in place by the bolt of said lock.
In testimony whereof I allix my signature.
