Be it known that we, Louis Gr. MILLER and EDWARD C. LONG, both citizens lof the United States, and both residing in theV borough of VVestmont, in the county of Cambria and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in Doors for Cars; and we do hereby declare the followino` to be a full, clear, and
exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.v
Our invention relates to drop Vdoors for railroad freight cars and particularly to those of the hopper or hopper gondola types. y Y y Our invention consists generallyin constructing a door adapted to close or vopen a pair of hoppers, one on either side of the center sill of the car, the necessity for this arising particularly from the `fact that the hopper cannot pass through the center sill, as the sill must be continuous throughout the car lengthV and in order to provide the greatest number` of openings, most hoppers are arranged impairs, one on each side of the center sill. Alleretofore `these doors have been made separatelyv for each hopper' and have been connected together by meansof what is known as door spreaders of various construction. opposed to this, we make our door 1of one piece, one end being adapted to close oropen one of the hoppers and the other end adapted to close or open the companionhopper. .Vde preferably make the door'narrower at its middle portion just below` the center` sill, as nof closure is required at that place` and we therefore save material, besides makina the central portion ofthe door somewhat flexi-` ble so that itmay twist slightly,iif necessary, to Vinsure tight closing against each of the hopper plates, Wemay also apply atruss` structure to. the door, adapted to stiden it, particularly atits narrow portion and where the pull of the operating mechanism isapplied, sothat it may ,be drawn up tightly against the hopper :without undue deflections, or thcstift'ening member may be madeintegral with the door.

As illustrated in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive, -l indicates the car door in general, 2 an opening between the two portions thereof, 3 isan integral flange on the forward end of the door which is preferably deeper at its intermediate portions and tapered thence to the ends of the door, this forward flange servinoas a stiii'ening member for the door..V
This Orward flange 3 has an inwardlybent portion 4 adapted to further strengthen and stiifen'it. The rear integral flanges of the door are 5 and it is also provided with integral side flanges, as shown, in fact, the entire door is provided with ari-integral continuous flange extending downwardly from pose of attaching to the dool` Voperating mechanism. y y y y Referring now to Figs. 4to 6 inclusive, 9 indicates a slightly modified form of door in general, provided with two end portions and a space or Opening l0 between the same,
11 is the front flange portion formed integral with the door, projecting downwardly therefrom and of less depth at the ends than at the central portion, being provided with an integral flanged edge 12 which projects outwardly, as illustrated, to further stiifen the door, in addition to which the reinforcing angle 13 is secured to the intermediate portion thereof, as illustrated. This dooil is 4also provided with an integral flange extending around all the edges thereof, that at the narrowest portion being liland the iear flange 15. A brace 16, which may be either formed of pressed plates or a casting, is secured to the door, as illustrated, and provided with an opening to receive the clevis bolt 17, which is adapted to be secured to the door operating mechanism.
Referring now to Figs. 7 to 9 inclusive: another slightly modified form of door indicated generally as 18, 19 is the opening or space between the two portions thereof, the integral rear and end flanges are Q0, the integral deeper and tapering front edge is 21, provided with forwardly projecting integral portion-:22, this door being provided with a pair of flanged stiffeners Q3 and -l,
the latter being shorter than the former, both secured to the door plate and provided with a space between them at their intermev diate portions, adapted to receive the clevis bolt 25, the nut of which rests against the washer plate 26.
It will be seen from the foregoing that we provide a door made in one piece adapted to close a pair of vtwin hoppers, one on either side of the center sill of the car or otherwise and all margins of the door are provided witli downwardly extending flanges formed integrally therewith and the door is i also provided with connections to the operating mechanism. These doors are all provided with hinges and hinge plates, the holes for the connections being indicated on the various doors.

do not wish` to be limited to the exact and specific details shown and described, but may use such substitutions, modifications oil equivalents thereof, as are embraced within the scope of our invention, or as pointed out in the claims.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1,'A car drop door comprising a metal plate formed integrally with a pair of end portions and a narrower central portion provided withintegral marginal edge flanges extending downwardly therefrom, the flange Copies of this patent may' be .obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Washington, D. on the forward longitudinal edge being provided with another integral flange portion.
2. A car drop door comprising a pair of doors integrally united by a narrow portion and provided with an integral downwardly extending marginal flange on all edges thereof, the flange on the forward longitudinal edge being provided with anotherintegral flange portion.

A car drop door comprising a metal plate formed integrally with a pair of end portions and a narrower central portion provided with integral marginal edge flanges extending downwardly therefrom, the flange on the forward longitudinal edge being deeper and provided with another integral flange portion extending therefrom.
